The Japanese remained quiet and formed lines for noodles and water amidst a ~ 9.2M quake, tsunami, and hundreds of aftershocks. There were no reports of riots, looting, home invasions, arson, murder, rape. In fact, they remained quite calm and orderly through it all now for months on end.

In contrast, US has been lucky so far to not suffer any of the major quakes that have been hitting all over the rest of the world. No disaster has happened yet, but theres are riots happening and increasing in scale. National Guard, city authorities, and now even campus police are practicing their hi-tech gadgets for mob control, most ineffective against angry and violent American mobs. What happens when our luck runs out and we do see disaster in Los Angeles, New York, New Madrid Fault states, etc? Won't our government run out of resources and really shut down by then (something it already has been doing for some time now)? Martial Law? Anarchy??

With the US being such a large area I think the smaller towns will be better off. You wouldn't want to be in an area with over 50,000.

We would either blame it on a terrorist and wipe out a small country, or we would take a week to respond while innocent people died.

That's a god fearing christian for ya'!!!

This is not factual. Please check your facts. In fact there was looting, break-ins and violence. Not on a mass scale, but, by no means was the situation without violence.

That being said?

I think American's would freak!

peace

In the event of some type of SHTF or a major event happening...I think that the low life scumbags that live and mooch off the system will be the majority of the problem starters after a SHTF even...They will be upset and want there free food and money like they always do, they will expect everyone else to provide for them or they will riot and just take...they have proven this several times over the last several years...example...is the LA riots and Katrina. They usually destroy there area and riot, or burn it...cuz there smart...lol.
I think if you stayed out of those areas and depending on what it is that happens, you can still be civilized and work together...just because the world in crashing down around you, doesn't mean you need to be a savage....there might be a time and place for everything, but you choose your actions.

some 20,000 perished in the Japanese quake/tsunami. How many perished in the tornado 'disaster'? The pileup on grand central last nite where a kid lost his life could be a 'disaster too'. I'm talking big picture, masses.

Katrina was a good example of what goes down during a diseaster. Chaos!!! It's up to you to protect yourself. The government can't be responsible to protect everyone. Hell we're spread thin world wide now as it is and Broke to boot. Only the elite will be protected as well as NASA employees. Who recently received notice on how diseasters will be handled in regards to NASA employees and there families said a post on ATS recently.

We do have our fair share of Natural disasters in the US, so lets make that clear. A Natural disaster won't have us blaming terrorist either ^^^....

There are various occurrence's in US past and present that will show you very well how we can come together, or grow apart in the face of disaster.

New Orleans showed us both the good and the evil....There were men and woman sacrificing everything to ensure the safety of their families. Their were also hoodlums, murdering and pillaging in the streets. It most certainly has to do with location of the event, I surely wouldn't want to be around the masses when the food and water started to deplete.

Much of the good that goes on in this world stems from people and communities that understand the importance of a strong support group. This understanding comes from a "Good" education, an education many of our low income communities do not receive or do not trust. When SHTF, they see it as an opportunity to get away w/ murder, in some cases literally.

So I think the answer is, yes we will see and hear of violence....but we will also see and hear of amazing act of courage and heroism in the face of disaster. The good comes with the bad...i'm sure there are incidents in Japan that have gone unheard of, but they are also a much less diverse country than our own.

It would depend upon the area and the make up of the populace. certain places and people react differently than others, so a definitive answer isn't really possible unless you narrow down the criteria.

Most people would do what they could to get out of the way. Then, like most people, would start to rebuild their lives. Some would help their neighbors, and some would attempt to take advantage of their neighbors...

In this, they'd be little different then people everywhere else.

We presently have thousands of folks who have been flooded out of their homes and have lost everything in them.
Who are they reacting?

As to a Nuke event....well, if the one in Nebraska keeps getting worse, we will find out, won't we?
