Gates Questions NATO's Future

online.wsj.com

Defense Secretary Robert Gates issued a blunt critique of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Friday, arguing the Libya operations demonstrated America's allies suffered from serious gaps in military capabilities because of their failure to spend enough on their own defense.

One of the NATO's most ardent defenders and pointed critics, the outgoing U.S. defense chief scathingly accused Europe of behaving increasingly like a free rider, as budget cuts eat deeper into military spending.

As an American with barely no health care(and almost dying sadly), our nation is badly burden when we had to pay 75% of military defense to other countries while other nations do not. Also with NATO and the UN(i hate them). Gates say in this article that the Europeans should pick up the armament pace of the US if they want to defense themselves. As far I remember last time though that Bill Clinton was criticized by our European allied for not doing something about Serbia.

Now don't turn it into nation vs nation this because all of this solved nothing but inciting hatred. We had to be put mature about this and discuss this in an intelligent way.

To be honest, i trust the UK, Canada, France, Australia, NZ, Germany as our allies

I knew it was going to come to this. We are going to start charging other countries for protecting them from terrorists.

Or maybe the US could SLASH it's defense budget then the rest of the world would not be forced to spend to keep up..

the un an nato are dismal failures.

europeans do need to take care of themselves and their own defense needs.

i do agree with gates on that part.

i do agree with cutting defense and withdrawl us forces from europe and the middle east.

however i do not agree with cutting defense to a point where the rest of the world outpaces us.

we stop one day we are dead you can either lead follow or become the victim,

reform and restructuring of defense is what i want i want the best that can be designed and built.

but if you cut defense the only thing that will happen is that same amount will be spent on entitlements.

and all the healthcare and "Educated" persons in this country and all those roads and infrastructure will amount to a hill of beans when someone starts killing them and blowing them up or worse detonate a couple of nukes.

Unless Europeans increase their own military budget and stop relying us for protection(it's one of the reason why we still have military bases), we could do that. Also we should pull out of UN and NATO and keep eyes on China. NATO and UN in my opinion was a failure to me. Because of them, we had to get in every conflict around the globe. We should form a new alliance and tell the UN and NATO to stick it where it belongs.

You honestly believe that?
IMO the US leaders are Empire building, not defending...

Oh, won't they be thrilled with that! And then we can make them buy Chertoff's scanners, and the TSA will be up their butts, and all of their civil liberties will have to be curtailed, and we'll have to write "Patriot Acts" for them, and all their copyright laws will have to be modified to meet RIAA/MPAA standards, and they'll definitely need secure National ID cards. WOW! Win/win/win....

European leaders need to stick it up for themselves because they have been leeching our security for years because after WW2, US spend millions to rebuild them and had to get involved because we are the only country when other countries cannot handle themselves. The US along spends 75% of military spending while Europe only spends around 25%, enough to keep their welfare while we had to suffer. The U.S. cannot AFFORD to continue shouldering the military burden for the Europeans. Through their socialist tendencies, they're taking great care of their people - fine. But that decreases their ability to fund decent militarism. If they don't care enough about their own security, why should we? Like I said, we simply cannot afford to carry these "allies" any longer because this nation is badly damaged. Obama was right to press them to do more in Libya, and thus far, they've proven marginally effective.

I agree, that it is unfair that we have to shoulder 3/4s of NATO but these other countries buy plenty of military tech/equipment from us, and the U.S. is the big, baddass rockstar of the planet we have to take care of our entourage or they will write a tell-all book and damage our credibility and secrets. I know that's a weird analogy but we need their support in the world just as much as they need ours. We need their votes in the U.N. We cannot lose any allies in the Great Game. The past few decades we have been nation building as we conquer more and more of the world's land and resources. Yes, it has come at the expense of our people, which is completely wrong, but if we weren't doing it other countries would be trying. So, I am glad it is us while being pissed off at the same time.

Last time i do remember though that Bill Clinton was blasted by our European Allied that we are not doing enough in Serbia and wanted our air-power to do it. Serbia hated us because of this.

NATO was created to fight agtainst the USSR now that threat is gone. The only true friendly was UK and other nations i mentioned early that stand side by side with us. We should form a new alliance with them and rethink our policies.

I think the point of NATO is to have as many Atlantic countries on our side as possible. Russia is still there, they spend the fourth most on their military in the world. China is a problem as they are coming up fast, but they are still far behind where Russia was in the 80's. I think Gates is really just trying to milk the other NATO countries for more cash or force them to buy some more of our outdated equipment while we upgrade.

Ah, interspersed in thsi thread is the typical "I hate the UN, we should leave - it sucks"..

Hmm, interestign coming from Americans. You do know, of course, that the UN as structured was put together by the US? You do know the US has wielded it's veto on international issues more times than any other country? You are, of course, aware the country with the biggest deficit in UN dues is the US? And also, you are aware, that as the UN is designed, a nation CANNOT leave.

So if the UN doesn't work, some of the blame must lay at the USA's feet.

Anyhoo, now that's out the way, I agree with the SecDef. While The UK and France play their part, other Euro countries certainly do not. Granted, some are really small and still do step up, like Denmark, but others are very wishy-washy, like Germany. As the EU's largest economy, they should certainly do more for defence or at least pay others to do it for them via the EU.

I also must take umbridge at the notion that the US is paying for Europes defence. If it wasn't in your interests then you wouldn't do it, simples.

No it's because we had to pay for the UN and NATO orignally meant for protection against USSR aggression. and we had to set the foot the bill for it because most of European politicians always wanted to take the lead then badmouth us when we go out to war and take a blame on someone. Someone with a 2 brain cells run together should know ow this. Coming from the Americans, we are quite frankly tired of it.

and tried to get on with people instead of blowing them up

the us would not have to spend so much on arms and defense

and also this just sound like a sales pitch from the biggest arms dealer
