The Core of Social Engineers

This memory seems like something from a movie, but is too vivid to be a dream.

I was a young lad watching CNN in the 80's, when I saw a sofa interview with a couple of men who claimed to be from The Core of Social Engineers. I remember thinking it was odd that these people would admit they are from an arm of the US government who's job is to influence the way we think. I remember one man who seemed controlling being very firm about Christianity being good for keeping the public docile.

Does anyone know what I'm remembering?
