All of a sudden, birds are falling from the sky, dead, and we frail little thinkers find signs of the apocalypse. Fact is, strange events occur all over the big blue marble, there’s just a heck of a lot more of us to capture them with our digital memory devices. Then the media (hey, that’s me!) jumps all over it and the next thing you know people are seeing the Virgin’s face on tortillas from San Luis Potosi to San Luis Obispo.
All of which is a rather nonsequitorial way of introducing this odd vulcan incident. In 1986, Alaska’s Mt. Augustine erupted, spewing gas and dust into the air. Through an uncommon but by no means extraterrestrial series of occurrences, water and ice condensed on the dust and wind currents swirled the stew into these bubble-like clouds. Creepy, eerie, and natural.

Small clarification.
Asperatus are not a "new" cloud. Their classification as a separate cloud type is new.
