I have a great job right now but recently in leu of current events, I am trying to cut back on everything.

Maybe it's just me, but a clean elegant vintage truck doesn't need to have a big block or huge tires, it just needs to have clean paint and shiny chrome to stand out.

The entire reason that I purchased my colorado is because I met a guy in/around 2003 who had a 1995 Chevy shortbed pickup that was completely stock, but was in LIKE NEW condition with only 45,000 miles. With so many of them running around looking like rust buckets, a non-rusted and waxed model looked like a vintage restored truck, even though it was made after 1990.

Very clean truck, too bad to hear about the accident. Did it tweak the frame, or was it restorable?

You know what, I build scale models and I remember putting together one of the cyclone kits year back, but in my entire life I think I've only every seen one in person. It was black/red.

A truck in England is a large vehicle which carries goods, another name we use for a lorry.
The vehicle your describing we call a utility vehicle or a pick up.

Over here those vehicles are only really used for working, mostly in the construction trade. We don't really use them for recreation.. Although we should.. I think they look cool..
There are only a few different types here, most popular, Toyota's and Mitsubishi's, there is a ford one too, but isn't as popular..

If i'm not mistaken most Brits think that us "Yanks" have oversized vehicles, which is probably one reason why trucks are not really popular over there. I remember a Top Gear episode where Jeremy was just absolutely bashing a new Ford for being too large and pointless, and that it would be impossible to drive in the UK.

He may be a smart-@$$, but he's probably right.

It had factory size tires and a 350 bored .40 over, nothing crazy.. Got the same gas mileage as a brand new truck.. Yea, the frame was the worst of the damage, pinched the exhaust too.. Insurance totaled it in a heartbeat..

I found another pic I had on my PC. This is with the old wheels on it. I hated the big meaty tires, and I wanted whitewalls, so I swapped them for some steelies.

Absolutely, I open the hood on my old truck, and there are about 5 things that could go wrong, You can afford to almost keep a spare of everything.

Yup, and the ability to replace 4 of those things on my own.

Take a newer truck to the mechanic and there goes a few months of salary.

I love it. The huge sidewalls did take away from the appearance and I think the steels look better. I took off the aluminum rims for my 77 and found an original set of steelies with beauty rings and the original "4x4" hubs.

I have had thoughts of painting my truck flat black as well and taking off the beauty rings, leaving just the steel rims and painting them red. I am an artist as well, so I thought of using my airbrush to put on some cool skulls and try my hand at pinstriping. With rat rod themed vehicles it's easy to make mistakes, sand it off, add a little bit of new paint to cover it and try it again without fear of sanding too far into the metal.

I have tried my hand at pinstriping, and while I am familiar with the technique, I lack the artistic creativity to really do anything I am happy with. Its a skill, but I think you do need to be an artist. What I like about rat rods, is that its all about building something really cool, without having a ton of money behind it. I used Tractor paint mixed with gray primer to get the shade of black I wanted, and the scallops and roof were just done with some rattle cans. I used metal I had around the shop for the other stuff. I have about $100 in everything I have done so far, and while its certainly no fancy show peice, it still turns a lot of heads.

Alot of people have said that, but I am obsessed with "low" and That was as far as I could lower it without serious rubbing issues, and it was starting to rub a little anyway. I think the steelies look better from a side view, but they kind of sit too deep back into the wheel wells. Im not sure what I will end up putting on it before its all said and done. I like bigger wheels, but they are a no-no on a true rat rod, but then again so is the air ride. by the time, I get all the metal work done, I might decide to paint it all shiny and slick, but Im not sure.

He has got a point, people here don't understand why you guys have these huge vehicles. But the reason is because your vehicles won't work here, firstly our roads are smaller.. And the reason for that is that were a small island and we just dont have the space, also alot of our cities are very old and were built in medieval times, they were never designed for big cars and trucks.
It would be a nightmare trying to get around here if everyone had something like the big black trucks posted here..

Secondly your fuel is half the price of what is is here.. A normal family couldn't afford to run a big engined car. Even the road tax and insurance cost alot more. A normal family car here would be between a 1.6 litre-2.2 litre..

I'm surprised you get top gear there.. Is it popular?
Clarkson is a smart # but to be honest what he says makes alot of sense.. If he went for prime minister, he would probably have a good chance of winning..

Top gear was on cable and satellite all the time, and they were quite funny for the most part. The only down side is that every joke he ever told went right over my head because I had no idea who anyone he was referring to was.

Personally, I like the steelies, however if you really want to make it stand out for less than $50, buy some cans of chevy red engine paint or if you want to really go a little on the pricy side, get some red tractor paint from tractor supply. Either paint will be more durable and resistant to rock chips/dings along with normal wear and tear.

Paint the steelies red and you will be much closer to what you're going for and really make it stand out. Here is an example of how it makes a difference:



However since you have the old school mooneye wheels that I had on my 71 C10, they do look good with a set of low profile tires, and especially with white walls. They have been around since the early fifties at least, I remember them being very popular on the old mercs and lead sleds of the day.

Keep the white walls, or at least buy some vintage tires to replace the standard whitewall. Coker makes replacements for tires that are long out of production, check it out:

if youre worried about gas then try Diesel my trucks get 20mpg and weigh 9K one with huge tires. diesel is where its at.


heres a pic of my ranger. its a fully caged desert race truck.

and one of my big superduty trucks the other one is a dually flatbed for really doing work.
