My final wake-up call and a plea to others:

So, I'm sitting back and cruising thru the latest on ATS. I reach over and grab a cigarette when I notice that big, gross and colorful picture of a damaged heart on the pack. Why did I notice it today? No idea. These pics have been on Canadian packs since 2000. I did however, wonder how many different warning pics we had on our packs. So, like a good little ATS'er, off I go to research.

Here's what I found:

More Here:
www.smoke-free.ca...

Now let's get to the US. It's coming there as well. Except the pics are getting a little more graphic and scary.

The list of 599 additives approved by the US Government for use in the manufacture of cigarettes is something every smoker should see. Submitted by the five major American cigarette companies to the Dept. of Health and Human Services in April of 1994, this list of ingredients had long been kept a secret.

It takes 3 pages to list them all!

Let's see if I can get them all here. I know it's a long list to put here but for the sake of the message, I think it makes sense:

And it gets worse! While these ingredients are approved as additives for foods, they were not tested by burning them, and it is the burning of many of these substances which changes their properties, often for the worse. Over 4000 chemical compounds are created by burning a cigarette – 69 of those chemicals are known to cause cancer.
Let me state this again: These were approved additives for food! What?

Not to mention the human cost as well as the cost to the Nation. The Govt. is basically allowing companies to poison us, get us hooked on drugs and all for not only the taxes collected but the money they can take from these cigarette companies for the permission to kill us.

www.tricountycessation.org...

1) The human cost of tobacco use is devastating. Tobacco is the single greatest cause of disease and premature death in America today and is responsible for more than 430,000 deaths each year. Nearly 25 percent of adult Americans currently smoke, and 3,000 children and adolescents become regular users of tobacco every day.

2) The financial burden of tobacco use is staggering. The societal costs of tobacco death and disease approach $100 billion. Americans spend an estimated $50 billion annually on direct medical care for smoking-related illnesses. Lost productivity and forfeited earnings due to smoking-related disability account for another $47 billion per year.

And these things are legal? The FDA is screaming the message that cigarettes KILL you! Not one death from that other weed, and it's illegal! Yet we can walk into any Mom and Pop Store to purchase Death in a Pack. Wow!

To put it in even more ridiculous terms, Milk from the neighbor's cow and Organic Foods are getting outlawed. In Britain, Natural Medicines are getting shut down. But, the Govt. will allow this poison to be sold openly to the public? I just can't understand how it has come to this.

This what a pack of cigarettes will look like in the US. Being from Canada, we are used to these.

The U.S. law requires 9 warnings. The public is invited to comment on the 36 proposed images until January 9, 2011. The warnings will be on packages by September 22, 2012.

www.fda.gov...

Placement Location on Cigarette Packages The Tobacco Control Act requires that the nine graphic health warnings appear on the upper portion of the front and rear panels of each cigarette package and comprise at least the top 50 percent of these panels. Placement Location on Cigarette Advertisement It also requires that they appear in each cigarette advertisement16, and occupy at least 20 percent of the advertisement. For advertisements with a surface area less than 12 square inches, the proposed rule provides a subset of proposed color graphics17 to accompany the nine textual warning statements.

Here is the complete set of graphics that will be used on cig packs:

www.fda.gov...

It's easy to go on and on about these little death sticks and even easier to fill pages and pages on the medical research involved but that's not what this about. We all know about cigarettes.

It'll be interesting to see what the quitting rate will be in the US when these pics hit the main stream. I know that in Canada, many quit after seeing some of these pics tho apparently not enough.

What did I get from all of this?

I will have my last cigarette today.

Why did I share this?

I hope you'll join me in quitting.

Thanks!

Cigarettes are legal because it can be taxed as much as the government desires.

A few years back I started buying organic "nothing added" smokes. Ya know what? They didn't ease my cravings even though there was just as much nicotine in them as the regular brands. So I guess the reason that cigs are so addictive is all the other chemicals that are added to it. My lungs felt better though.

The governments love to tax, so I don't see any changes coming in the near future, but I for one am quitting this week. More for financial reasons but it would be nice to taste food again.

I just can't believe that the Govt. allows this. When tobacco companies started adding more and more chemicals to increase burn time and addiction, there should have been a point where the Govt. said Enough!

But I guess the taxes won.

These ads would be ok on products that we know not to ingest. Bleach, Acid, Rat Poison...

But on legal, over the counter products that have only one purpose, human consumption...Wow!

Eeek, yeah.
I'm done smoking now.
I've been smoking and have been around tobacco use for most of my life.
I've known about the dangers and some of the chemicals present but this puts my cherry out, haha!

No shock here.. The tobacco lobby is pretty big if memory serves. And as we all know, money is all that matters to our pols on both sides of the aisle.

As a MM card carrier here in CA as well as being someone that just quit smoking (about 2-3 months smoke free so far), this thread hits near to home for me.

I don't know if that is entirely true but a plant matter than can cure 90% of what big pharma is selling you in pill form will never be legalized. The vote would be bought out as it has been in the past.

Another logical assumption would be why create a free thinking society when you have a drugged up zombie society eating up everything you give them?

Many politicians agree the war on drugs is impossible to win, it's very logical to tax the sale of it, but the repercussions after ten, twenty years of having a generation think entirely differently will never allow this. It's too unpredictable for our comfort. Sigh.

Ahhhh yes, a free thinking society. Must... not... allow....Imagine the majority of all populations thinking freely and finding one's minds eye. Truly horrifying thought to TPTB.
