Well you certainly can't have a recovery with that... I wonder what's the number of families that never worked in their entire lives in the US/Canada...

Families where no one has ever worked doubled under Labour

The toxic legacy of worklessness left by Labour has been laid bare in stark figures.

Between 1997 and 2010 the number of households in which no one has ever had a job almost doubled from 184,000 to 352,000.

This equates to more than 550,000 people for whom worklessness has become a way of life, according to the Office for National Statistics.

When a family gets into that ``culture of welfare``, they generally don't get out of it. People tells themselves : why work when you can afford NOT to?

That is socialism for you. Why work when you do not have to? Why not leech off of the productive members of society? Of course, eventually the producers get tired of it and stop producing so that they can also leech from others. Who is John Gault?

In my bakery, I tried to hire workers but eventually had to close. Why?

I (We) paid $12 per hour. But welfare paid more.

It didn't seem like it but when you calculate that welfare paid rent, food, dental, medical etc, what was the point?

I (We) actually calculated everything that welfare would pay against what I (We) could pay and told potential workers, 'You are better off not working'.

They asked if they could work under the table. Good for them but I (We) can't claim it so I (We) actually lose.

Without actually posting all the numbers here, my (Our) calculations worked out to $22 per hour that I (We) would have to pay for someone working at my (Our) till.

If I (We) were in the same position, I (We) would let the Govt. own me (us) instead of being my (our) own person. That's their plan and they're winning.

However, I (We) will not lie down. sooner or later people will understand that working for me (us) (not me exactly but the little guy) has more freedom and security than collecting welfare/un-employment.

I (We) may be an A$$hole at times (what boss isn't?) but I (We) won't try to own you.

I (We) closed one bakery because of this and I (We) am now opening another. Hopefully I'll (We'll) find others that think the same way as I (We) do. And that is, if we all work together and not get greedy, we'll get down the road together.

PS....I...We....It's all about us.

Thanks

I know of one family currently working on a FOURTH generation of welfare recipients. They have absolutely zero incentive to go out and find jobs, the Province of British Columbia and the taxpayer gives them enough to get by.

It's absolutely disgusting. Even as recently as 100 years ago, people that refuse to contribute to society would be kicked out of that society. You don't want to work? Fine. Then starve.

Why able bodied people are on welfare for life is completely beyond me. Why Governments allow it is also completely beyond me. The fact the welfare recipients get full free medical and dental benefits is assinine, as is the fact that prisoners get this.

The ONLY way to get people off welfare is to make welfare so inconvenient or so completely impossible to live on that people don't WANT to be on welfare. Scrap free medical and dental, introduce weekly random drug and alcohol testing for each and every welfare recipient, make the cheques deliverable by mail ONLY and ONLY cashable at City Hall after drug and alcohol tests have been administered. Give welfare recipients scrip that can ONLY be spent at City Hall stores instead of cash.

Welfare should be a short term support measure, NOT a lifestyle choice.

If able bodied people don't want to work, then leave them out on the ice floe and let nature take its course.

You are such a meanie wanting people to work for a living. Don't you know that food, housing, medical, dental, and 52" plasma screens are rights and people should not have to work just for such basics? [/sarcasm]

All I really have to say after skimming this article; well atleast they're trying to stamp it out.

Or is it that, they really want the social classes to be more.. visible?

Honestly, at first I thought it was going to say the wealthy.. then it turned out to be poor people on assisted living. Perhaps.. and just perhaps.. they should get rid of it, and in the meantime, try and get the community to work together. and create an income as a whole, and provide something to show the passing of their time.. ..

None of this is likely.

Never gonna happen in Europe. I love my Euro friends, but by and large there is a culture of entitlement far worse than anything the US has ever seen. Today austerity measures taken due to the profligacy of Eurozone governments are creating riots. And these spending habits and outright profligacy would not be if it weren't for the constant demand by the PEOPLE to be taken care of from cradle to grave.

The same is now happening in the US. With 44 million people on food stamps and growing..We're actually dumb enough to measure the welfare program success by how many are on it rather than how many come off of it. It's sickening to me.

I don't have a "job".

I leech off my parents because it's not much of a loss for them, I live frugally, and IMO continuing this oppressive estate via feeding into the tax system is an err.

Theoretically, if enough people opted out, the system would collapse.

Some may see this as a rationalisation.

You are free to your opinion.

I do my best to contribute to the awareness of the community against the oppressive nature of the estate.

I plan on contributing to humanity by publishing papers, expressing my views, enlightening the people, and perhaps innovating in the sciences eventually.

Must I have a "job" to be a decent human being?!

Nope. But you should support yourself instead of expecting others to do so. Start your own business. Sell those books and papers you plan to write. Something.

That will eventually come.

Patience is a virtue

I support myself in every which way except financially for the moment.

It doesn't bother my family, nor does it bother me.

There is no harm being done.

Thank you for the input.

You should work so you're not a 40 year old burden on elderly parents.

You are rationalizing. And it's sad.

How on Earth can you say you live frugally when it isn't even your money you're spending? Yes, you DO have to work. Because when you finally get out into the big bad world not having anything to offer is going to beat you down very quickly, and sane people aren't going to let you leech off of them.

What else seems to be wrong with your position? Well for starters you say you don't want to feed the system, but you don't seem to have a problem with your parents feeding the system while they hold you up too.

How altruistic

That's not a reasonable possibility.

You are rationalizing. And it's sad.

Rationalizations are false beliefs. Where is the belief, and where is it false?

How on Earth can you say you live frugally when it isn't even your money you're spending?

I don't follow the logic.

Yes, you DO have to work.

Define, "work".

Because when you finally get out into the big bad world not having anything to offer is going to beat you down very quickly, and sane people aren't going to let you leech off of them.

I see no reasoning in this statement. I have a lot to offer. Please qualify your interpretation of the term, "sanity".

Thanks!

Oh I see what you're doing there...Now you're being coy trying to avoid the fact that not everyone is going to take your rationalization as something positive.

People like YOU are what is wrong with society. You think you can provide all the good in the world while feeding off the hard work of others.

It's truly sad.

This is who you are:

Logical err..

I can't change the fact that my parents "work", and make money, and feed the system, and give me some off of it.

They will do so no matter what.

By me feeding into the system, it becomes ever so slightly more powerful.

Obviously, you're just being jealous, and trying really hard to beat me down.

No thanks!

I'm jealous?

Really?

You're so self righteous that you believe the greatest thing you can provide the world is your opinions while you feed off the society and system you condemn..

Do you listen to yourself?
