A Senate page who was fired Friday for holding a "Stop Harper" sign during the government's throne speech says she hopes to inspire more cases of "civil disobedience."

Brigette Marcelle, a 21-year-old graduate from the University of Ottawa, said that she only recently decided to put her job on the line and stage the silent protest.

Though she was immediately fired from the sought-after position, Marcelle said she doesn't regret upstaging the government on its coming out day in Ottawa.

In fact, Marcelle, who is also a theatre performer, called on people across the country to stage Canada's own version of the "Arab Spring" and stand up to the recently-elected Conservative majority government.

"This is the only way we're going to see real change," Marcelle told CTV News Channel, as she conceded that Harper's majority government will hold parliamentary sway for the next four years.

Marcelle managed to hold her sign up for about 20 seconds, and stood steps from Prime Minister Stephen Harper. She was quickly escorted out of the chamber and immediately fired.

Despite the protest, Gov. Gen. David Johnson didn't stop reading and the speech was not interrupted. The Conservative speech borrows heavily from the government's campaign platform, and it promises to keep the economy as the chief focus over the next year.

However, the speech also promises to get rid of the long-gun registry and break up the monopoly of the Canadian Wheat Board.

Marcelle had served in the Senate as a page for nearly a year, but she decided to take action a few days ago because she said Harper doesn't reflect the majority of Canadians.

"Harper's agenda is disastrous for this country and for my generation," Marcelle said.

She added that the government is "blowing billions of dollars" on fighter jets and corporate tax cuts, but ignoring important environmental issues like climate change.

But since Harper recently won a majority, Marcelle said that staging "creative" protests is the only way to fight back.

"I think that Harper's agenda is so damaging that it called for something that is different," she said. "I think we really need to take action."

Wow, even the senate wants Harper out.
I never liked him, he sadly changed the reputation of Canada to USA 2.

He's the first Prime Minister in years that seems to listen to TPTB all the way.
All he cares about is war, money and his own power.
He also only won because he is the only right wing party vs 4-5 left wing parties. 61% of Canadians are liberalists, but Harper won with 39%.

The CWB opposes the unconfined release of genetically modified wheat and barley in western Canada

No wonder he wants them out, Harper wants GMO's to plague Canadian wheat too.

He must be thrown out before it's too late!!

Hes a sell out.

I agree with this.

This is what they implemented the HST tax for and probably this issue.

Without knowing much about her story, I was just so happy to read this article.

Many people say that protesting doesn't work. This topic is trending on twitter in Canada right now and many people are talking about it. So I guess it does work in a way, doesn't it.

Just when I was losing hope that the younger generation was filled with a bunch of "useful idiots", this came along and gave me hope. Real hope.

I love that image of her just feet away from Harper.

She sacrificed a job many covet to make a statement.

For that I salute her!

She interrupted the House of Commons throne speech

Point is that you don't do that if you want a career in the right side of politics.

I hate when people use the f35's as a reason why Harper is a terrible PM. If I'm gonna ask other people to protect me, my freedom and my country I want them to have the best tools available. No matter the cost.

The F-35 is the most overbloated aircraft project in the world. It has doubled in price. It is a tactical strike fighter, not a long-range interceptor. Even the American military is considering not buying these things.

Buying the F-35 is a political move to improve ties between Ottawa and Washington, as well as furthering the US-Canadian military industrial complex cooperation pact from the 1950s.

The fact is that the F-35 is a POS and doesn't suit our needs. We were told by the US to buy the F-35 so USAF interceptors could "protect" our skies for us via NORAD and NORCOM. This would be an entirely different story if the US offered us the F-22, which would actually suit our needs, but they won't export it to anyone.

Oh, and did I mention that American weapon corporations have a horrible track record for supplying us with the weapons we order? Sikorsky has pushed back our Cyclone order for years and kept begging for more money (and they still haven't replaced our SeaKing fleet yet).

I was shocked at some of the vicious comments made about that young page by the followers of the above CTV website.. According to most of them she is now even unfit for employment in a fast food joint (even with her University Degree). 60% of Canadians did NOT vote for the Conservative agenda and yet some people believe that her views on the Harper Government are somehow in the minority. For the first time in Canadian history, the Prime Minister himself was held in "contempt of Parliament" prior to the election which saw a majority win for the Conservatives. I agree with the now unemployed page, Brigette Depape, that "anytime is the time to protest not once every four years".

Canada's purchase of the F-35 at this time has nothing to do with politics. It was purely economical. Canada was, thanks to the purchase contract, now allowed to bid on a far greater range of supplier contracts. The hope is that we will regain a large sum of the spent money in taxes over the next decade...to which things are so far going well (we have the highest success rate on contracts bid vs contracts awarded of all countires involved).

That makes no sense whatsoever.

Economical choice to buy the most expensive fighter on the market right now? Which has met many failures in production and doesn't even fit the role that we need it for?

No, a logical choice for us would have been to invest in Typhoons. We buy American weaponry because we have a joint military industrial defense pact where we work together to develop and arm ourselves (it was signed in the 50s, and the Arrow series was cut to pieces soon afterwards). It's called the Defense Production Sharing Agreement (July 27/1956), and it still dictates our military industry (click the link for the document itself).
