Canada considering international bases: MacKay

www.cbc.ca

Canada is looking at setting up bases around the world to better position the military to participate in international missions, Defence Minister Peter MacKay confirmed Thursday.

The Canadian Forces does "prudent planning," MacKay told reporters, taking into account the ability to participate in international missions.

There are no plans to set up permanent bases around the world, but the planning happens to ensure Canada has options in case the military needs to deploy from another country, a government source said.

"As we look out into the future what we obviously try to do is an

A report in Montreal newspaper Le Devoir said the Canadian Forces is negotiating to set up bases under a program known as the Operational Support Hubs Network. They've reportedly already completed negotiations with Germany and Jamaica, and are in talks with Kuwait, Senegal, Kenya or Tanzania, Singapore and South Korea.

Canada did have a base in the United Arab Emirates, known as Camp Mirage, to ease access to Afghanistan, but was kicked out after a dispute over commercial landing rights in Canada.

The Canadian Forces had to scramble to set up an alternative base in Cyprus. They also use a base in Germany for staging.

OMG!! Of all the countries it had to be the Canadians. Are they becoming the superpower? We better watch what goes up in the north. We got thousands of miles of border exposed to an invasion.

OMG OMG OMG OH NOEZ!!!!!!!11111

So uhh, what makes Canada any different than other countries around the globe that are doing the exact same thing? Canada has long been a huge contributor on the humanitarian stage of things and having areas of operations around the world is key when dealing with such situations. Not all FOB's, airbases and installations are used for war efforts, the majority of them are used in peace keeping and humanitarian missions, especially when it comes to supplies and logistics that are key to Canada's C130 aircraft that routinely do air drops of food and medicine into remote regions of the globe.

This better not happen but I'm not surprised. Harper is like the American Bush. And I cannot believe the Canadians that gave this crook a majority. How about you start taking care of the people and creating more jobs for all the unemployed instead of blowing more money on things we don't need. Just like the billions he is going to spend on those fighter jets that don't even suit our environment. Watch out this is only the beginning. This government is more conerned about prosecuting you than protecting you.

Ahhh yes, the ominous bush=hitler=harper cliche which is plopped about internet forums by the uninformed and uneducated on a daily basis. It's almost like hearing the same giant turd plopping down into a huge toilet on an infinite basis; it makes about the same sense and worth the same.

Yes, Canadians voted a MAJORITY, people like myself voted for Mr. Harper for a reason, it was the only logical option unless one would like to see his or her country driven into the ground the way Mr. Socialist Obama is currently destroying the US economy. But I hazard to guess you probably voted for the Marijuana party right?

Yeah let's just set up an airstrip and arm it with Sea Kings...

I don't think that's a very good idea. I think Canada's military should stay in Canada. We aren't an occupational kind of country, at least I hope we aren't.

I don't think people will take too kindly to that sort of nonsense anyway.

It's just as well you guys voted in the marijuana party. Maybe then the government would have some sort of conscience and truly be in service to others mode!

At best you are only voting for the 3rd ranking official in the country. Nobody elected has any power to do anything extra than is allotted for them in their agendas. Think about it.

What is the wording of the oath of office? Is it a pledge to a flag? To the Canadian People? Or is it to someone that is not living on nor born on Canadian Soil?

It's the illusion of choice. 3rd in command and he was elected with less than 40% of the vote. It matters not.

Well I find it hilarious that your talking about being uneducated and in the same sentence referring to what I'm saying as sounding the same as someone taking a crap. While he got a majority, the MAJORITY of people that did vote, didn't vote for him. LMAO you just said,"people like myself voted for Mr. Harper for a reason, it was the only logical option unless one would like to see his or her country driven into the ground the way." Well when Harper got in he had a surplus. And now were in a pretty big deficit. Your for a Prime Minister that gives huge tax cuts to big corporations? Do you realize we have one of the lowest tax rates in the world for these corporations. 25% lower than that of the states! It has been reduced by 35% in recent years under Harper. And your going to call me uneducated and uninformed when you make a statement about him not being the only guy to not drive this country into the ground. HE is the reason we have a 56 billion deficit or whatever it is. Were bound to be another 200 billion in debt based on decisions by his government. Now no one can stop him.

And I voted for the Green party. They are the only party, IMO, that would actually represent the people. Why is it that every other party is given televised debates except for them. They are given no media coverage either. And Elizabeth May was the only one to bring to the publics attention, Harper's desire for a North American Union. She has an interview saying not only will Harper not debate the issue, he won't allow the public to know about it. So while your there in your little fantasy world imaging a turd hit the water in toilet and calling me uneducated, try to do some research or at least pay attention to who you are voting for!

First strike fighters?
International bases?
Big jails?
Opposition suppression?

You would think we would have had enough sense to learn from our southern neighbors mistakes?

Canada has woken up from its little pacifist ruse. Our overloaded intake of US media and kill simulator video games has done its work.

The left majority has been squashed by to much division Lib, Green, NDP
The right became one; Alliance, reform, PC = Conservative majority.

I blame the ineptness of our Liberal party for this.

Edit to add: So what is Canada to become the Obama of the world. No bad baggage to hold back our advancement?

Stinking Harper. Not a big surprise from Canada's Bush, but still disgusting.

Here's an idea : what about they put a military base in Ottawa... and every time the Canadian government screws the Canadian people, YOU BOMB THE PARLIAMENT? Leave no survivor.

Then elections. A government that fears it's people governs better.

Anyway, any Canadian that respects himself is against this crap. Screw Harper and his supporters. Move to pro-war areas of America if you love war so much.

It is, or I guess I should say was one of the reasons why I love Canada. We were seen as the peacekeepers of the world. Going into Afghanistan changed that, IMO. Our jets and military has also been flying missions and performing strike sorties in Libya. Regardless of your stance on whether it's genuine or orchestrated, bombing Libya's infrastructure and taking the side of the rebels from the get go is not protecting civilians. With that said though, Welcome to Canada, eh(probably long overdue
). Makes me glad to have people coming here who want the same government in this respect.

I always believed it was in the Liberals interest to do this, or at least someone pulling the strings. They had a real shot this election of getting a minority but they choose Ignatief(or however you spell it). He and Harper agree on most issues. It was odd that we would do a vote of no confidence. I believe the Liberal party was meant to tank because they knew NDP were going to get votes(and boy did they ever). The Liberals had a chance to perhaps win or at least do decent and they purposefully tanked it. No Canadian in their right mind would vote for that guy.

From what little I have been exposed to in politics up here, it seems like the same dismal goverment like the US is.
Two perties, putting on a good old match for the masses, but both screwing over the people. I have been burnt out of politics since the last presidential primaries, so I haven't taken the plunge up here just yet.

I think you might be on to something there. I mean Dion(you can't be serious)? Then the creepy vibes Ignatieff? The Conservatives won the election on auto pilot.
I like Layton as a human being but he worries me as our head watchdog(with no teeth). He reminds me of a used car salesmen.

Harper is Bilderberg. Ignatieff is Bilderberg. Dion was Bilderberg. I bet the next Liberal leader will be a Bilderberg puppet too.

Cast any vote and you vote for a Bilderberg puppet.

Enough said.

We need a revolution in Canada too...

The problem with Canadian politics is that the right wing has one party.
While the left has lots of options.

In the election there were lots of seats that were decided like this

Con= 5000
NDP=4000
Lib=3500
Green=1700

If you look at the Votes tallied as a whole the Conservatives do not represent a majority of Canadians.
