Earlier today, a small asteroid designated 2009 BD passed Earth. It is estimated to be about 10 meters in diameter. 2009 BD was recently discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey. An object of this size, if it had hit Earth, would likely have created an explosion similar in sized to that from an atomic bomb (depending upon composition and speed at impact). Earth gets hit by this sized body every now and then. That it is out there and that it is passing near Earth are not unusual. It is one of a large number of such bodies in the Solar System.

I'll try not to be rude but I couldn't watch that video for too long.
Something about the narrators voice.
Plus I'm not a big fan of videos of people trying to show articles on their computer and zooming in on them.

I'm glad it passed earth instead of smacking into it I did manage to read the text

Did you even read the article you linked?

While confirming that the asteroid is not a threat to earth, scientists say that if the asteroid were on course to impact earth it would cause a multimegaton atmospheric explosion over Earth’s surface, rather than impacting it. It potentially would be quite damaging (and even lethal) out to distances of 10 to 20 kilometres in all directions if it happened over a populated region with weak structures. Read more: www.cosmostv.org...

It isn't a threat so why are you all alert happy?

It isnt even that close. Is the title for shock value?

I really wish people would stop with the "alerts" and "proof" tags in their titles.

Why do I get this weird feeling that this year one of these mutha's is going to hit a poulated city?

Agreed the sensationalist headline was a really unnecessary

perhaps a better headline would have been.

Earth nearly avoids comet impact. (or) Comet passes near Earth.

All kinds of goodies zing past our planet's front door on a regular basis.

Some of them are bound to enter our atmosphere once in a while, and some of those are bound to make impact once in a while too.

It's a fact of life.
It always has been.

We live in a beautifully chaotic complex universe.

It passed by Earth 2 days ago.. May 31st at 13:39 UTC.

Nothing to worry about as it was 1.47 Lunar Distances from our little Rock.

If I wasn't aware of the supposed Comets Elenin and Honda which are alleged to be passing close to Earth, I would breathe a sigh of relief that it DID pass and go about my day. BUT, given recent speculation, I can't assume that this asteroid isn't the beginning of a series of close calls with space debris.

I'll keep an eye out for developments that could prove or disprove the validity of my theory.

What great detection capabilities. You think this little rock deserves a WHOLE thread? Really? At the distance it would be?

You would need something on the scale of a human single cell to actually get bound into an orbit around this very insignificant piece of space dust. If it was on a direct 60º collision impact path to earth it would disintegrate at around 50,000 feet. Totally.

its projected pass is at .9 LD. just short the distance from here to the Moon, I'd not be to worried about 2009BD. Its relative velocity and orbit is no threat. perhaps in the future its next pass may pose
