every man—is an end in himself, not the means to the ends of others. He must exist for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself.

www.aynrand.org...

You said you are against people who use others for their own self-interest, this goes against point 3 of her Objectivist philosophy. This means you probably heard wrong about her philosophy.

So, can you name a few Ayn Rand books you've read? Or some examples of why her writing is bad? No, you can not.

I read Atlas Shrugged and found it as boring as watching grass grow in slow motion.

A friend recomended I read The Fountainhead but to be honest I'm just not that interested.

So in other words you can't give one concrete reason other than it was "boring" that her writing is bad. It's safe to say then you have no idea what you're talking about?

Do I need more of a reason than finding her work boring?

It doesn't matter much really. The woman is dead, her influence outside of America is vey small and her utopia is looking as unlikely to happen as ever.

The best bet is that Ayn Rand suffered from Aspbergers syndrome. I have a friend and a brother in law who are similarly afflicted. The friend is an incredible jeweler and tries very hard to be human. The brother in law is a notable geophysicist doing oil exploration (yes he says we are past peak oil); he on the other hand tries but seldom succeeds at being human. Live around Asbergers for a while - yep Ayn Rand is there. Even the Aspbergers forums keep making the connection.

These are not people who you what to use to model a society. Ayn Rands utopia would not work - neither would my brother-in-laws.

Just because someone is bizarrely smart and talented - it doesn't mean that the aren't guano crazy.

Best example from TVLand Sheldon on the Big Bang Theory -- character is textbook.

yeah, most of those you talk to about Ayn Rand that find her boring, extreme or whatever derogatory term they use to describe her, has never read even one of her books. This is the way of the world, the parrots will repeat whatever they hear someone else say about someone without looking into it themselves.

Actually you cant say that! That is an extremely bigoted statement that reflects poorly on you observations. Everyone I knew at University had read Rand - of course this was back in the sixties when one actually went to school to expand ones mind.

Most everybody myself included became enraptured with the concept and then began to realize that it would only work for an individual living on an island by themselves. If you actually had to share resources, well it didnt work so well. It also doesn't help that the population has doubled since the sixties, and communications has become pervasive. It is harder to be an isolationist.

You do know that even the singular Ayn Rand turned to medicaid and social security becoming dependent on the good will of others. She left not with a bang but a wimper.

WHich is why it's odd that the left is always demonizing her even though she's dead.

Who are "the left"? Can you show that "they" are "always demonising her"?
