I drink a lot of diet soda with aspartame, and now I found out I have hyperthyroidism

Here is a link explaining the connection
www.aspartamesafety.com...

All I have been drinking is diet soda with ASPARTAME....a lot of it, every day, practically all I drink...

With hyperthyroidism there are these ways to treat it, with meds, surgery to remove the thyroid, and most commonly, radioactive iodine, that's right, they use radioactive iodine to treat it, by destroying the thyroid tissue so it no longer functions. And people often become permanently hypothyroid (always if it is a thyroidectomy, can't have normal thyroid function if you have no thyroid) as a result, having to take synthetic thyroid hormone for the rest of their lives.

If hyperthyroidism is caused by aspartame, then the treatment could be as simple as no longer drinking that poison.

I am definitely NOT going to take another sip of anything containing aspartame. I am going to drink bottled spring water...as much as I prefer diet soda, it is important for my health. I urge everyone to join me in removing aspartame from your diet as well

Aspartame is just one of the tasty toxins, there are many more to look out for:

- MSG (monosodium glutamate)
- Neotame
- Acesulfame K
- Sodium Cyclamate

Those are just ones I could think of off my head. I would recommend you stay off ALL junk foods, McD's , all forms of fizzy drink, research the grape diet, i think you need a serious detox! But there is always hope.

I might point out that Neotame is not required to be listed - and is approved (!!!) for use in organic foods!...so avoiding it in any processed foods becomes problematic. Best bet? Use basic, organic ingredients and make One's own food.

In the last 2 decades it's become increasingly important to be mindful of what you consume. Unfortunately, it's become quite easy to eat yourself to death, literally. Stay away from ALL soda, diet or not.

I'm not really versed on the latter three on that list, but MSG is not a cause for concern:

While many people believe that monosodium glutamate (MSG) is the cause of these symptoms, an association has never been demonstrated under rigorously controlled conditions, even in studies with people who were convinced that they were sensitive to the compound.[10][11][12][13] Adequately controlling for experimental bias includes a placebo-controlled double-blinded experimental design and the application in capsules because of the strong and unique after-taste of glutamates.[10]

hyperthyroidism is not a new condition - its been documented long before aspartame was every used - why do you think that aspartamane has triggered your condition ?

Good thread. I authored a thread way back relating to sweetners in drinks. Just my take on the subject

Sweetners in drinks

I will not drink any sweetened drinks. They taste horrible anyway.

People are starting to wake up to this. I would rather pay more for a quailty naturally sweetened drink than this horrible stuff.

Really? MSG is safe? Must be why I get headaches when I eat that crap. You might want to do a little more research on MSG from some place other than Wikipedia.

Scientists routinely use MSG or glutamate to induce obesity in lab animals. It was discovered in the 1960's by researcher Dr. John Olney that MSG damaged cells of the hypothalamus in the brain and made mice morbidly obese.

Diseases which may be caused by MSG are obesity, Type II diabetes, and high blood pressure. In studies, HEALTHY mice were made obese and leptin resistant, and AMPK was activated. A recent Study in rural China on humans, shows MSG contributes to obesity, regardless of caloric intake or activity. Animal studies also showed that glutamate constricts blood vessels. It acts as a calcium channel OPENER, and increased appetite in healthy animals by 40% by acting on the hypothalamus. Those taking calcium channel blockers may be interested in knowing that MSG COUNTERACTS the most often prescribed medications for high blood pressure - calcium channel blockers.

It sounds like you did your research into aspartame and now know how bad that stuff is. For those who still like their diet soft drinks and think just because the FDA approved aspartame for use, it must be safe, read this:

The most current research studies showing aspartame is a carcinogen are not new discoveries proving the dangers of aspartame. Aspartame was determined to be a dangerous chemical as early as the 1960s. Over the past 30 years, aspartame has been identified as a carcinogen, a chemical that eats holes in brain tissue, and a dangerous food additive during pregnancy. Aspartame has been proven in research studies to lower the IQ of a fetus an average of 20 points, to deform the cleft palette during fetal development, and to adversely affect brain and nerve development in a fetus.

Actually, aspartame was refused approval for use by the FDA initially...

aspartame WAS removed from the public market after it was approved. Aspartame has actually been approved for market TWICE. In the 1970s, aspartame was first approved by the FDA, but that approval was immediately rescinded when research was presented, showing that aspartame ate holes in the brains of the lab animals at Washington University.

But then Donald Rumsfeld stepped in..

"Rumsfeld was president of Serle corporation in 1977, maker of aspartame, then, part of Reagan transition team, and got aspartame 'legalized' by appointing a defense department contractor [??] (Hayes) as head of FDA! In January 1981 Rumsfeld told a sales meeting, according to one attendee, that he would call in his chips and get aspartame approved by the end of the year. On January 25th, the day the new president took office, the previous FDA commissioner's authority was suspended, and the next month, the commissioner's job went to Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes. Transition records do not show why the administration chose ***Hayes, a professor and Defense Department contract researcher.*** In July Hayes, defying FDA advisors, approved aspartame for dry foods -- his first major decision. In November 1983 the FDA approved aspartame for soft drinks -- Hayes' last decision. In November 1983 Hayes, under fire for accepting corporate gifts, left the agency and went to Searle's public-relations firm as senior medical advisor. Later Searle lawyer Robert Shapiro named aspartame NutraSweet. Monsanto purchased Searle. Rumsfeld received a $12 million bonus. Shapiro is now Monsanto president. .....Former White House Chief of Staff Rumsfeld owed a debt of gratitude to former White House confidante and Rumsfeld friend Donald Kendal, Pepsi's chairman. The Pepsi announcement and aggressive marketing (millions of gumballs, a red and white swirl, tough contracts) made NutraSweet known in every home. ....From 1985 to 1995, researchers did about 400 aspartame studies. They were divided almost evenly between those that gave assurances and those that raised questions about the sweetener. Most instructively, Searle paid for 100% of those finding no problem. All studies paid for by non-industry sources raised questions."

The FDA has a long history of approving toxic chemicals and poisons for payoffs and backroom deals. They don't care about your health, they just care about the money.

Jesus man, whenever anything bad happens, you can count on either Rumsfeld or Cheney. Those two Neocons need to really disappear soon...

I have been drinking a diluted squash drink n the UK starts with R. for years.
Lat year I was diagnosed Vitamin D deficient, Potassium and phosphate deficient. And my adrenals were exhausted.
The adrenals control your thyroid, so see if they can check your adrenals too.

You can self treat;
Take extra vitamin B complex (must be complex) and make your life as stress free as poss. Multi vitamin is a must. Cut out sugars and white processed wheat, pasta, etc. Make wholemeal cake, bread and biscuits your food.

Research on the web and take care of yourself.

Did you know the Russians were treating Hyperthyroidism with a bath of Fluoride!!! And this is what is in toothpaste and USA drinking water!!!!
Peace and love.
