What was the connection of alqaeda to the forces around saddam hussein or to alqaeda to any of the forces that were engaged in Afghanistan, if any?

The US built both of them.

Saddam was a financed to assassinate his predecessor in exchange for cheap oil. He refused to honor the deal when he came into power, the result was Desert Storm. Al Qaeda means "The List" and is merely the name of a CIA database, not a "terrorist" group. As for the forces in Afghanistan, they were originally sent in to "hunt Osama," the chosen scapegoat for the 9/11 attacks. (at the time we were actually involved with arms deals with his brother)
There is a whole lot more to the story but there are a few generalities of the situation, we've all seen where it's gone from there.

Al Qaeda: The base, not the list, my mistake

Not the most convincing sources in my opinion but this is a fresh os install so I don't retain any of my old bookmarks/documents.
