Sure, you can try to refuse, at which point you are going to be detained until we can determine your status and any involvement. If we are making contact with you its for a reason, and not some random stop. Its because you are matching the description of a possible suspect.

While I respect your opinion in this case, you would be wrong.

well the "defenders of the indefensible" usually complain that there are never any "good cop threads"...

Sigh!!!! like i said this officer won't last long before he's tainted or forced out or worse

it's almost as if to balance this stuff a whole lot pretty nasty 'bad cop 'stories are being posted today
the most revolting one involving a female LEO make kiddie porn by tying her kids to a desk naked and beating them with a paddle and then posting it on a fetish site

I had an experience in New Zealand in 1993 while doing the final garbage run when moving house. I noted cop cars all over the place, some slowed to get a look at me with my then... jarhead cut, long goaty and tatts.

After turning off the freeway cop cars suddenly surrounded me forcing me off the road, where a loud-hailer told me to show my hands and slowly get out of the car. I did as told and saw cops behind every car door aiming rifles at me.

So following directives I slowly turned, put hands on the roof of my car and spread legs.. and didn't flinch in case someone was a little too touchy on their trigger finger. One cop patted me down and then searched the back of the car to find I was only carrying garbage in plastic bags.

The cops relaxed and put their firearms away then the one who patted me down told a bank had been robbed ten minutes earlier by a guy fitting my appearance and using a car exactly the same as mine... it was our runabout car.. about 25 years old, lime green estate wagon. Who would have thought there would be two cars exactly like that old bomb?

So they let me get on with my day and left quickly.

It was then I realised that one wrong move on my part would have me being shot multiple times. Man was I glad I complied that day... something that was a bit unusual for me when dealing with arrogant cops in the past. The cops were just doing there job, at no time were they offensive to me in any way.

There's not one thing wrong about what I am saying. The police are now granted rights that were not intended, and its only apathy and fear that allow it to happen.

At that point I would get the officers badge number, file a complaint, and contact a lawyer.

Again, I am an innocent citizen of a free country. An officer can ask me anything he wants, its up to me if I want to oblige or not. Hell, even under arrest I have EVERY RIGHT to remain silent.

Its called an investigative detention, and it is allowed under law, including Supreme court rulings. As you say, you can decide what your response will be, and you are free to that response. We will respond accordingly until we can determine your not the person we are looking for or involved in any way.

That's not good cop vs bad cop. That's just a cop doing his job. What, now we're suppose to applaud when a cop does his job? They wre obviously searching for an armed suspect, and had helicopters involved. He wasn't going to waste more time on you.

Just considering the numbers though, while that cop was doing his job, which you want to applaud him for doing, another one was out there racially profiling an innocent person, planting drugs, beating them up, or any of the other scenarios we so often hear about. The cop culture is so corrupt to this point we're now pointing out them doing their job as a positive.

Same as applauding a priest for not molesting a child. Shouldn't do it in the first place.

And thats fine. I would never physically resist a cop, if only because most enjoy the chance to beat someone. Once a gun is pointed at me, and the cop gives me an order, I am going to oblige, and let my lawyer handle it after that. There is plenty of precedent in illegal detention, police harrassment, not to mention civil suits for pain & suffering and mental anguish that I am confident it wouldnt just pass.

There are many cops that I have seen do their job with great dignity .

Just because I don't like the excessive use of force by some police officers ,does not mean I don''t appreciate the ones that do their jobs well.

I could tell a few good stories about how well I have seen police handle situations.

I don't take kindly to being labelled a cop hater ,and some sort of ex criminal because I object to the way some do handle situations at times.

I never thought of it that way, but thats a very good point.

I feel totally bashed by some here ,from the other thread..and now many are looking at me as some sort of cop hater cause I don't always agree with the way they handle stuff, and some are SERIOUSLY breaking the law.

.but they are cops..and the rest are just thugs...according to some.

Because I say that..does it mean I hate teachers? and I have no respect for education?

Glad it worked out for you. In my almost 30 years I've had to come in contact with LEOs about 6 times. Every time we parted it was with a "thank you" and a smile. Even when I was clearly in the wrong. The only posts about cops are usually the bad ones. You can find a hundred of them on YouTube. But thousands of people a day come into contact with LEOs. Where are those stories? LEOs helping people is not sensationalistic enough and doesn't feed the "OMG POLICE STATE!!111" trolls.

Oh man that was one post I could have gone without reading.

I suppose after being on ATS for as long as I have I can just not notice the sick threads and do all I can to avoid the ones I do see.

It can be a problem but I was told once that the best way to combat those types of threads is to ignore them, that the thread starters usually give up and either go away or stop posting that kind of stuff.

Anyway Im out of here but glad to hear you had the chance to remain cool, calm and collected in what could have gone differently had you reacted rather respond.

It was a good day for you.

Did you ever stop to consider that the reason some post what you refer to as "sick" threads is because they want people to be aware..of crap that actually happens..so maybe just maybe people through that awareness can actually help.

The fact that you can't even read a thread or post about real situations ,and that you have to combat the reality of these situations, discussed in threads, by ignoring them, shows me you really don't care at all, about some of the real live crap that people have to live through.

Yep..lets ignore the post about the cop who tied up her kids naked, and beat them..cause ..OMG ..we're just feeding into the posters attention seeking..I for one am glad people who know of this stuff INFORM us of it ,a s ugly as it may be.

How else are you supposed to raise awareness that it happens, and continues to happen.

Its people like you who contribute to it still happening, because you refuse to acknowedge it exists, and dare blame the posters for it.

Like its such a crime to talk about the extreme sorrow some people are going through in this world,at the hands of people who should have our respect..like a police officer in this example.

wow..I can't believe you said those things in your post...and I always thought you were someone who actually cared about real suffering...but now I'm thinking your just someone who likes to pretend they do.

While I get your point, it complacency like this that is leading to the elimination of our rights.

I would have politely declined his requests until he had a better reason to search me. A cop does not have the right to put his hands on you, just because you 'fit a description'.

Here's the way that would have turned out..............
1.Officer stops you and asks questions, you in turn ask him why or refuse to answer.
2.Officer asks for identification, as OP stated you have none, now you are not being cooperative and are possibly concealing your identity.
3. Officer radios for back up, you become annoyed and want to leave, officer has no intention of letting you control this situation.
Now, at the very least, you will be charged with disorderly conduct. If you protest or resist in any way charges will be added.
Don't believe me? Look up the number of times a civilian has won a case against a police officer in the last ten years.
