Sure, you can try to refuse, at which point you are going to be detained until we can determine your status and any involvement. If we are making contact with you its for a reason, and not some random stop. Its because you are matching the description of a possible suspect.
While I respect your opinion in this case, you would be wrong.
maybe it's just me

Its called an investigative detention, and it is allowed under law, including Supreme court rulings. As you say, you can decide what your response will be, and you are free to that response. We will respond accordingly until we can determine your not the person we are looking for or involved in any way.edit on 27-5-2011 by Xcathdra because: (no reason given)

That's not good cop vs bad cop. That's just a cop doing his job. What, now we're suppose to applaud when a cop does his job? They wre obviously searching for an armed suspect, and had helicopters involved. He wasn't going to waste more time on you.
Just considering the numbers though, while that cop was doing his job, which you want to applaud him for doing, another one was out there racially profiling an innocent person, planting drugs, beating them up, or any of the other scenarios we so often hear about. The cop culture is so corrupt to this point we're now pointing out them doing their job as a positive.
Same as applauding a priest for not molesting a child. Shouldn't do it in the first place.

Oh man that was one post I could have gone without reading.
I suppose after being on ATS for as long as I have I can just not notice the sick threads and do all I can to avoid the ones I do see.
It can be a problem but I was told once that the best way to combat those types of threads is to ignore them, that the thread starters usually give up and either go away or stop posting that kind of stuff.
Anyway Im out of here but glad to hear you had the chance to remain cool, calm and collected in what could have gone differently had you reacted rather respond.
It was a good day for you.

While I get your point, it complacency like this that is leading to the elimination of our rights.
I would have politely declined his requests until he had a better reason to search me. A cop does not have the right to put his hands on you, just because you 'fit a description'.
