Indeed. There are people like this in all groups and walks of life -- including Jews. And yet the media insists on making this a "Catholic" thing, completely refusing to acknowledge the fact that Jews do this type of thing as well. Hmm.....I wonder why that is.

But these priests had these thoughts when they were younger, and gravitated to the church. Why aren't they ending their affiliation with the church? The uproar comes from people outside of the religion. It's one big, disgusting cult.

I really don't know how young these men may have been when they became aware of their own sexuality, or more specifically, their preference for paedophilia or child molestation. Many religious households are/were very repressed and even the thought of a discussion about dating, sexuality etcetera would be akin to an episode of The Twilight Zone. I can state from personal experience as my Mother raised us in the RC Church, that life can be a slice of hell on earth. There is so much mis-information pounded into your head from when you are very young. Guilt becomes nearly never-ending. It gets worse as one goes through puberty as natural & healthy inquisitiveness is shunned, experimentation results in more fear and guilt, and there is incredible tension and discomfort knowing "God is watching you!" Neither of my parents ever took one minute to explain the 'birds & the bees' to me, much less providing information about the changes taking place in my body as I matured. Nor did they tell me a thing about interfacing with members of the opposite sex, dating, etcetera.

For families that were so religious the parents steered their son(s) toward priesthood, who knows how repressed and confused those young men were? Young Catholics are taught it is wrong to touch ones self, it is wrong to engage in pre-marital sex, heck, it is wrong to even THINK of such things as the very thought is just as offensive as having done the deed; it is sin. It borders on insanity and twists a young persons mind. TTBOMK young Catholics headed for priesthood attend private Catholic high schools. I'm going to assume the majority of these boys probably attended Catholic Schools during grades K - 8 to begin with.

These days there seems to be much participation in sex amongst HS age students but this wasn't always so. In my day many fellows graduating HS were virgins. Youth who attended Catholic elementary & HS were often separated in the past; boys and girls were not in the same classrooms. After HS young men bound for priesthood would (again, TTBOMK) either attend a Catholic College or go on to Seminary, where they trained for their duties. There are schools like this across America filled with clueless virgins that have had blinders on them for their whole life.

As these young men would be concentrating on their careers and devotions as newly ordained priests for the first few years, I think it may be possible that many of them have not had the maturity, time and privacy to explore their own sexuality until they are in their early to mid 20's. Shunned from doing so, they finally have some quiet alone time to question if their vow of celibacy may have been an error. Having undergone a lifetime of repression, ignorance, fear of sin and Catholic guilt, I can't imagine how confused and ready-to-explode a physically healthy heterosexual male would be. There are longings and cravings and hormones that surge through young bodies; I can't imagine how denying access to the joys of sex can be healthy.

Now imagine if this fellow in these circumstances had found himself aroused by another male. I think the guilt and shame might be too much to bear for one trying to serve the Lord. Being raised in a repressed corridor I do not feel that man under those circumstances would feel comfortable in speaking to one of the other priests about their thoughts. Given the nature of the RC Church I think that young priest would find deep regret in seeking consolation through counsel or confession.

The third category is the young priest who finds himself stirred by thoughts involving youngsters or children. Obviously there have been many who gave in to their desires, we've all read about them. Once they were ticking time bombs, eventually something had to explode. Good judgement goes out the window when lustful desire for forbidden fruit is allowed.

Overall, I can't help but wonder if all those years of Catholic faith-based family upbringing, oppression, guilt, ignorance, fear, shame and intense control led some of these men to seek gratification in a most unacceptable way. I think it is possible that some priests, whether they were heterosexual, homosexual or had always harbored a preference for children, eventually turned to those left in their charge to release their pent-up desires because they felt there was no other outlet. In other words, the life-long damage takes a toll and the system creates the worst in society.

I also suspect there is/was a percentage of young priests who were victimized themselves in their youth and they later took that same path.

As for your mention of the hypocrisy of the Church representatives speaking out against homosexuality, I learned first-hand how badly the RC Church damaged some guys I went to school with.

I was not on Facebook very long when past schoolmates began popping up to say hello. At least three nice guys that I attended public HS with (along with CCD Classes at our Church, and we attended the same Mass on Sundays) wrote me to say hi. Their stories were very similar. Each of these fellows went out into the world, married, had children now in their 20's. Then they finally came to grips with the truth, got divorced, and are all happy as can be in gay relationships. It broke my heart to learn these guys were not able to be themselves until the bulk of their lives was already lived.

Many people do not realize how deep an impact being raised in the RC Church has. It takes a lot of work to undo all those years of having so much damage done.

As for the uproar of Catholics against the RC Church, believe me, it has occurred. While they may have not lost their faith in God there is a tremendous quantity of faithful who no longer attend services to worship, worldwide. Some will never go back, others have found other houses of worship to attend.

In closing, by actual definition, the RC Church is not a cult, it is a bona fide recognized religious body.

don't worry. the pope will get what he deserves shortly. he will flee the vatican before the end of the year, and then two years after he flees, he will "die a cruel death". it's not a pretty picture, but i take comfort in it.

all child molesters should be tried, and if found guilty, castrated without anything for the pain. 24 hours later they should be shot. its only fair, the pain they cause, both mentally and physically, is atrocious.

Personally I think what you are saying is fairly accurate...but I think there is one more element that shouldn't be missed. I think the Church's views on Homosexuality cause the Priesthood ends up, paradoxically attracting a certain type of homosexual individual...namely those that are either completely in the closet and want to remain that way, or who believe their homosexuality a sin, and see this as a way to escape it. Why the Priesthood though? They need not answer any uncomfortable questions from friends and family about why they have yet to find girl and get married. Its the one place in Society they can go and be accepted, as not having to marry a female. I think many of them probably start off imagining that they can suppress their sexual desires....but it's simply not as easy as they may have believed....throw in vulnerable male children in the mix, and it's a recipe for disaster.

Not that I'm trying to whitewash how horrible such acts are.....Just some thoughts on understanding how it might happen. What could the Church do differently? Allowing marriage for priests may be one option, but I don't think it addresses the problem. Many priests will still opt to stay single, and therefore homosexuals will still find it a possible refuge...especially if they themselves come from sexually repressed families or countries. They may still see it as their only option at living a 'normal' life as far as society is concerned. I think the only way to seriously address this problem is for the church to start preaching less intolerant doctrine....something that is not likely to happen any time soon, to be sure.

The Catholic church and pedophilia go together like a horse and carriage. The cases of pedophile priests never stop coming out and these are just those who get caught. It would be really interesting to have a decent estimate of the percentage of pedophile priests. It should be the job with the highest rates of pedophiles next to school teachers probably.

To be fair across the board,most old people aren`t the best lookers anymore,let alone you can get gross pitures of an attractive person from time to time and especially if you try to get a bad pic.You see it in the media all the time.
