Philippians 4:5
Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Now to explain why I chose to quote these two passages. At times we get too caught up in the himan, narrow view of spiritual warfare, and it comes back to bite us in the arse. Spiritual leadership is lived, not preached, shouted, and shoved.

Moderation does not mean compromise, or weakness. It means being wise enough to recognize your situation, and be in the correct "mode." When attacked, do not blindly attack back in the heat of the moment. Learn, observe, formulate a response. In doing so you may even change your ways of thinking on some issues. No one knows the whole counsel of God. An articulate, informed, moderate christian(someone truly Christ-like) is not interested in defending ego. If you truly believe others opinions should not shake, or challenge you. They offer you an opportunity to grow, and learn. Some posts are removed because from an open secular point of view(this site IS secular) they can be construed as offensive, and/or off base. Of course human bias cannot help, but be a factor too.

Don't attack back. Atheists are not your enemy. I have good friends that are atheists. Were you converted from atheism by ridicule, and personal attack? A lot of atheists are very intelligent, a lot not all. They want proof. they want to experience the tangible. It is not an unwarranted response in the light of all the deception in the world. You must educate yourself to a higher level to "wage this war." Remember you can lead an atheist to God, but you can't make them drink. That is a personal choice, and an intimate one between creation, and creator. All my atheist friends are inspired by my life, and think I'm the "luckiest guy in the world." They have been told full well however that "luck" has nothing to do with it. I love my atheist friends, and our friendship is not based around my attempts to convert them. I hardly bring it up. They ask me questions all the time though. Even if they don't agree they don't have to to be my friend.

I grew up in a very strong evangelical, conventional family. We don't see eye to eye on a great many things, but I have more people interested in christianity in my life than they do in theirs, and my dad is starting to adopt some of my philosophy because it is effective. If you remember Jesus rubbed the religious the wrong way too. We live in grace. unmerited favor is a very limited definition of grace. I prefer the definition: "The influence of God on the heart, and it's reflection in life." The law is dead(fulfilled) and only existed to prove we could not do it. We have direct connection now, and what may be contrary to direct interpretation of the law could be God's will none the less.

Quoting scripture is ineffective with atheists, agnostics, and most secular people you have to make it real, make it available. I do not like biblebabble. It is confusing, and comes accross superioristic. Don't become so heavenly minded you are no earthly good. Jesus hung out with the "bad" crowd, and was ridiculed, and eventually killed by the religious zealots of the day. Reject religiousity in all forms, and cultivate the presence of God in your life. Few do it or know how.

Mark 7:13
Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye

Alright already, we heard you the first time, please stop screaming at us. If you don't want your religion attacked then keep it to yourself! Seriously, faith and religion are very personal matters and honestly making a post like this only puts yourself and your faith/religion out in the open for attacks. Try leading by example and living the way your faith preaches rather than shoving it down other people's throats and demanding they respect your faith when you show no respect for other people's faith. Geez how hard is it to live together in peace and harmony and search out conspiracies? YEESH, people need to chill out and learn to get along already!!!! This is just a website on the internet it's really NOT that big a deal if someone disagrees with you or believes something that you don't.

You've come to a site filled with free-thinkers with strong opinions. We have our own individual belief systems. Religions, in the eyes of most of us, are a great part of the problem with the world today.

We don't care what you believe; we just don't think religious arguments are rational. Stick to the rules of the road and you'll be fine.

Now spirituality: That's a whole other ballgame (to thoroughly mix my metaphors
).

My guess is that the posts you create draw attention from some who aren't even atheist, but simply anti-religious.

I can hardly resist responding to god's (self proclaimed) soldiers (and soilders too).

Why don't you sit down and write out a what your description of what God would be like. Mine would be something like, all-loving, caring, comforting, the ultimate expression of science, healing, non-judgmental, kindness, etc etc.

Now go read the old testament and compare that to the god I just spoke of. Angry, murderous, vengeful, jealous. Does this sound right to you? Or have you grown comfortable with this description because you are scared to go to "hell"?

Maybe there are people who simply don't believe the bible because it was written by men, about a god that seems more like a rotten child?

Religion is mostly regional based. If your born in Iraq chances are your religion is Islam. If your born in the south eastern United States you may be a form of Baptist just as Utah you're probably Latter Day Saint. I know there are exceptions to this but for the most part you can see what I mean.

My point is that you are around like minded people that believe as you do and when you step onto the World Wide Web and express your opinion you then find out just how many different religious opinions everyone else has.

Don't take it so personal.

The same faith you have in your beliefs is the same faith some have in no beliefs.

"Rotten child" indeed. I think that's what originally turned me away from organized religion. I suddenly realized one day: "WTH kind of a GOD is THAT? Even some of the worst human beings have more redeeming qualities than that!"

I've seen tons of faith bashing as well, but God is of love and Jesus doesn't condone violence and preaches to turn the other cheek.

We have enough people who slap fish bumper stickers on their car then go cutting people off and making us all look like jackasses and tote their Bible around preaching ignorance and only showing they know nothing of the Bible they claim to be fighting for. (Edit: and to be specific yahwehsprincess I wasn't speaking about you)

On a different note, did anyone else happen to sit through the 5 hours of videos this guy posted?

www.suddenreality.com...

I did and he makes the most compelling point about the OT and Satan impersonating our God under the name Jehovah. I won't say much more but the evidence really made me scratch my chin and wonder if it was possible. I would love to hear any opinions from anyone who has watched the videos.

Much love

View spirituality like getting a brand new car. The sacred texts are the owners manual. Too many people sit in the driveway thumping everyone in the head with the owner's manual. The only way to really know what you are talking about is to DRIVE the darned thing. The owner's manual doesn't give you the sense of kinesthesia you aquire from running through the curves yourself. The manual doesn't tell you how the car will feel in a panic stop, or in a 4 wheel drift. You only gain that by experience behind the wheel. Put the manual down since you probably have it memorized, and take the car for a spin. Don't be afraid to get some scratches on it. You will, but it can be fixed.

Ironically as a gay person I find myself sympathizing increasingly with some religious folk (OK, not the hardcore homophobes, but for many Christians I meet the former homophobic diatribes have softened significantly to something like: "I don't agree with your 'lifestyle', but we can still be friends and accept each other").
We've had these pseudo-scientific insults thrown at us for decades.
It's not very nice, is it?

Interestingly the OP of the thread in question refers to some gray matter that is reduced because of the stress and depression caused by being a minority.
It does not say only stupid people become religious, but backs up claims that being different is stressful enough to affect the mind. Welcome to our world!
With some consideration that is actually helpful to the faithful in some ways.
It recognizes them as a discriminated against minority.
Of course it's not so good for the preachers who promise pie-in-the-sky prosperity, and a perfect life after salvation (which isn't really promised on earth in the Bible).

Viewing some material on the Netherlands recently it is now surprising how gays and Christian minorities are forming alliances over the threat of radical Islam. The Christians and gay minorities will be the first to feel the effects of radical Islam, and the physical attacks on gays by Moroccans is already a big problem.
In fact, traditionally conservative people are now doing the job formerly done by liberals in protecting women and minorities from the true extremists, and their frightening message and attacks.

However, I would be careful about using metaphors of soldiers and warfare, unless they are carefully explained.
I first thought you were in the army, or the IDF!
Real soldiers might just take offense.
Perhaps you are an activist for your faith (rather than a soldier)?
You could also learn much from other minority activists and how they channeled their stress and anger into useful action and debate.

And atheists have a smaller .....? Now I'm really intrigued. Is it something rude?

In general I'm far more concerned about the faith that actually murders people for their views, such as the murders of gay politician Pim Fortuyn and film-maker Theo van Gogh by radical Islamists.
en.wikipedia.org...(film_director)
Better not call them anything nasty.

Here we go with the angry god stuff again. I do not fear the judgement of Yahweh. Instead of wasting time fearing "Yahweh" I prefer to glorify the loving creator I believe in by actually doing things that your bible says YOU should be doing. (Check your eyes for moats right about now).

Here is the similarity between us: We both believe in God and have absolutely NO proof of his (her? their?) existence.

Here is the difference between us: I'm not afraid to admit that I have no proof.

Hi halfoldman. I love reading your posts, and replies. You are one of the most intelligent, and articulate people I have interacted with on ATS. I love gay people too. Not just "ok, we can still be friends... even though you're wierd."

You are so correct. We have to hang together, or we will hang seperately. If we were in the same area I'd buy you a drink, and I think we'd have a lot to talk about.

if a man lie with another man it is consider an abomination and his blood is on his own hands! JESUS loves you but the FATHER HATES your sinful sexual behavior!!!!! you were created to make love to a woman lucifer has decived you and any christian that acepts your sin!!!!!!!!!

I'm not gay, but I'll take some of those angry-points you are handing out. I say love is love, even if YOU don't get it. God is LOVE.

ps - have you been authorized by god to extend his wrath to those who simply support others who are "sinning", or were there a few verses you could cut and paste to prove it?

Um... I think I see the problem. :-)

I fully understand the deep loyalty we have for our Savior and how this loyalty can make us want to lash out at those who we perceive as violating His honor. But I try to reserve outbursts of such zeal for those who say they are believers but live in sin. We have to remember that by the examples of Jesus and Paul, rebuke is for God's children, not others.

According to scripture, sexual deviancy is a sin--- but so is heterosexual promiscuity, adultery, swindling, slander, etc. Whatever we feel is the proper expression of rebuke, we have to be consistent and not give passes to certain "traditional" sins. How many preachers have been arrested for porn, prostitutes, or rape and even pedophilia? The problem is widespread and we need to clean our own house first; God will take care of the rest:

1 Cor. 5:9-13
I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a person, do not even eat.

What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man from among you.”

As long as all I have to fear from you is a tongue-lashing, an assumption of what it means to be "gay" and a verse selectively ripped from the OT, that's just dandy.
If (as the many unnecessary exclamation marks may suggest) you are prone to eruptive behavior and endless moral outrage, then I fear you may be in the wrong religion until you find something more extreme.
But what does "faithful" mean anyway?
That could range from Joel Osteen to Fred Phelps.
Are you Westboro?
What church do you follow?

Sure, a lot of Christians believe what you just said, but I think they'd have the maturity not to present it in that manner in response to what I wrote.
