If, as I suppose, the people hitting the guards were Portuguese (the sign the guy was showing said that the family was supporting the Portuguese referee), it wouldn't had make a difference, most people in Portugal do not fear the police.

They're not cops, they're Security Guards. Crowd reaction was perfect, but I have to wonder what would they've done with real cops.

I'm not trying to imply an opinion, but what is a valid direct response to ONGOING and CURRENT (words that are important here) unnecessary violence?
So You shouldn't feel bad for the cops then because they were being even bigger "dicks". Those pigs got what they deserved and more of them should get the same treatment. Police are nothing more than revenue collectors with the power to beat people and abuse power.
yes, that guy knew very well he was gonna get slammed to the ground and taken away in cuffs, but he did it anyway. if he get slapped around the head , i really don't mind.

that's a good question that I don't have a simple answer to. like I originally stated, the guy wasnt a threat and I'm not sticking up for the cops. but fighting fire with fire doesn't work. the only thing that will happen from situations like this is that cops will be given MORE freedom for use of force to "protect" themselves. you really want to stop violence? stop breaking laws..... no one breaking laws = no jobs for cops. violence breeds violence. no one wins.
Two wrongs do not make a right

Apparently people don't realize this is a fallacy of logic.

If this took place in a western country, especially America - the police would open fire almost immediately and everyone would go jelly...
OUR GOVERNMENTS AND LAWS HAVE MADE US TOO SOFT.
