Total number of crimes, yes. We also have nearly five times the population.
Per Capita we are much safer than most of Europe.
Acording to the Telegraph,
The total number of violent offences recorded compared to population is higher than any other country in Europe, as well as America, Canada, Australia and South Africa...
It means there are over 2,000 crimes recorded per 100,000 population in the UK, making it the most violent place in Europe.
Austria is second, with a rate of 1,677 per 100,000 people, followed by Sweden, Belgium, Finland and Holland.
By comparison, America has an estimated rate of 466 violent crimes per 100,000 population.
France recorded 324,765 violent crimes in 2007 – a 67 per cent increase in the past decade – at a rate of 504 per 100,000 population.

He's right movie boy.... Police and Military are trained to clear malfunctions(jams)under stress,.
Revolvers have less to go wrong.
You are responsible for every bullet that leaves your barrel; if you can't deal with a threat with 6 well placed shots. you are probably screwed even with a big bad auto pistol.
I have both; I was trained to carry the1911, That puts me in a different category than somebodies Mom.
So what. If I get the threat stopped in the first 3 rounds or few seconds. Statitically most gunfights last a few seconds and occur at point blank range.

Sorry, but you are lagging behind in the last century. You are confining yourself to a firearm that usuually carries less rounds and is slower to reload because you think semi-autos are less reliable than revolvers. The Colt 1911 you mention is renowned for it's reliablilty

eto as are a host of other autos by quality manufacturers. I carried an M9, it went bang every time as does my Glock. The trigger pull on a Glock isn't great, but it's better than most revolvers being fired double action.
You are not the first person to say "if you can't deal with a threat with 6 well placed shots, you are probably screwed."
That's a callous disregard for someone's life. What if they are in a bad situation against multiple threats? Don't you want to at least give them a chance with a few more rounds instead of just writing them off as screwed?
Since you called me a "movie boy", I'll just say I have quite a bit more experience than many, but less than a few people here.
It is very possible, and most times likely, that you will go through more than 6 rounds in a firefight indoors unless you catch the attacker unaware. Since he is breaking in to your house, he senses are already on full alert while you may be coming out of a deep sleep. In fact, if you don't catch him in the first round or two, you can expect alot of gunfire to exchange real quick if he's armed. And I can tell you most of the gunfire exchanged won't be "well placed shots," it'll be the best you can shoot as you are waking up and shooting from whatever cover you're ducking behind... and you'll be shooting at anything you can see exposed or whatever you hope your bullets will go through to get him. Of course, maybe you'll get lucky and he will silhouette himself in a hallway and you can double tap him center mass with 4 rounds to spare...
The best advice that I can tell the OP is to reinforce the entry doors. Doors on most American suburb houses are easy to kick in. Home Depot sells a one piece door frame reinforcement kit: Home Depot door kit
If not that, at least replace the crappy little woodscrews with 3" ones that go into the frame instead of just the trim. Replace the screws for the hinges with longer ones also. Security film on first floor windows and stops that restrict window opening to 8" would be good also.
If someone kicks your door in when you are asleep, you only have a few seconds to wake up and get your weapon before they are upon you. That's what you really need to prevent or delay for as long as possible.
Alarms? Sure, but secure the doors and windows first. It's cheaper and provides better immediate physical protection.
