Whenever a "fake alien invasion" is brought up I think of the episode The Architects Of Fear (1963) from the original Outer Limits TV show. The idea of a fake alien invasion is at least almost fifty years old and it is a sci-fi creation.

The idea goes back even further than that. British spy-thriller writer Bernard Newman was probably the first to write about it, in his 1948 novel The Flying Saucer, which includes elements that would later become part of the Roswell mythos.
