Elenin is not a hoax. At least not in the sense that it doesn't exist. There is actually a comet out there named C/2010 X1 (Elenin). While the fearmongering surrounding Elenin seems to have been created by one or two hoaxers (Terral and Astrolpatriot) most of the subsequent theories have merely been the product of misguided minds seeing connections where there are none. You have nothing to worry about, Elenin is a simple comet that has less gravitational effect of the Earth than a car.
