Okay. This is the first time I have ever crystallized these thoughts and put them in print, so this is a personally defining moment for me. And I am pretty sure joining ATS a few months ago in December has been the catalyst that has brought me to this moment. So here goes:

It has taken me a long time to finally accept that this whole "Us and Them" "Two Party" charade I've been sold my whole life is a big fat lie. Folks, basically what we have here is two sides of one coin. Republicans or Democrats, in truth, It.Does.Not.Matter. The real truth of it is that each of the two parties (do not be fooled into thinking that the other "movements" within the two parties are in any way separate entities) are half of a two-sided illusion. It has been very difficult for me to accept this, because my social beliefs have always been staunchly liberal, but the fact remains that the opposing social platforms of the two parties are nothing more than two brilliantly crafted smokescreens designed to camouflage the true function of the two parties, which amounts to nothing more than two opposing psychological pathways to the collective wallets, paychecks, and bank accounts of the American people.

We are all being played. Don't doubt it for one minute. If the American people were ever to unite behind one defining purpose, it would spell the end of the bloated, self-governing, self rewarding, charade of a system of government we now have in place, which is why the leadership of the two parties and everyone involved at the highest levels of government continue to foment hatred and mistrust between the members of the two opposing parties. People on either side of the political party spectrum like to go on and on about The Constitution and the Founding Fathers, blah blah blah, but I guarantee you the Founding Fathers would be HORRIFIED by what we, the American people, have stood stupidly by over the past 200 years and allowed the United States Government to become. And that means all of us, DEMS, REPUBS, INDEPENDENTS, ETC., INCLUDED. The saddest thing about this mess we are in, and this is a doozy, is that the Republican Party, The Democratic Party, and our entire system of government is, to use a poignant catchphrase, simply "too big to fail." So. We're stuck with it. I see no realistic way out. Which means this also marks the moment that I have officially become a cynic.

Great.

EDIT: Oh, and by the way, TA, it goes without saying, but S&F. Lots of respect for you, man. [Insert "fist bump" here.

It all depends on the alternatives.

McCain and Palin versus Obama and Biden didn't leave most people with much of a choice. Especially considering that McCain could die at any moment and leave us with someone dumber than Bush.

Ron Paul isn't much of a choice either. Any person with an ounce of common sense can see that Ron Paul is a Judas with nefarious ulterior motives.

I'm not the biggest Paul fan, but why do you say that Paul is a Judas?
Proof?
Also, why do you say that Palin is dumber than Bush?
Proof?

Just curious.

The bigger question is why does ANYONE still even vote?

I just turned 18 and will never vote once in my entire life.

To me its like voting on pro wrestling, it makes you feel pretty good and you feel like your contributing, but I don't really know if your vote has any outcome at all. For all we know, the votes are already in the box before the booths are open, or however they do it.

All it would take is the most basic of computer techs to just change the total number of votes to whatever they want.

I for one believe they already tried it during the bush election, learned that it works, and learned that nobody caught on to it. Now they will likely just do it more often now.

The question that has me pondering today is, why would ANYONE VOTE since all we have ever had is corrupted officials and corruption in government/regimes across the globe.

I'm in awe really.

Exactly, Its like they are voting for which one is LESS corrupt, you have to be corrupt to want to run everything, what kind of person WANTS to be president?

For lack of a better choice, many will vote for him.

Look at the options in the last election. Doh!

The republican party is all f'd up. Looking like a bunch of greedy wackos willing to say anything in order to appeal to people. Trouble is, all they do is criticize the dems without coming up with an agenda and set of policies that really help the country.

Ron Paul is a definite choice right now but they (the republicans) will paint him as a loon and thus eliminate their (IMO) best candidate... Like they did last time.

That's why.

You play right into their hands. They count on you not voting instead of voting for change.
Thanks a bunch.

Kind of like being thirsty and saying we shouldn't drill for water cause we probably won't find it.

Worst case you write in a name. To not vote at all is like not even trying.

Though I'm not fully on the Ron Paul bandwagon, but if it comes down him or obama then yeah, he's got my vote. This country can not take another four more years of obama's bumbling, I don't think we can't take another two years actually.

corruption happens in all the governments over the world. Doesn't matter who's ruling the country,as money and power comes in people with great promises change, the way the world turns I guess!

That is precisely the question I had when he was a candidate in 2008. I also wondered why anyone would vote for someone who had no real leadership experience, was exceptionally young, and hadn't even managed a candy store. The answer is race. In addition to being a talented orator, the qualification he had, and the only one he needed was the fact he was black, or sort of back. Sort of white and sort of Arab also.

The silly sheeple who elected him didn't even bother to ask what exactly did he mean by "change." What did he want to change us into? They continually brushed off his ties to Marxists, socialists and radical left thinkers. Nobody asked for any background information like college transcripts, or even a birth certificate. He got a pass on all of the sordid, shady details. He was hand picked by TPTB like all presidents. I'm sure someone in the McCain camp had questioned his citizenship. They weren't incompetent. They just knew they were supposed to come in second.

Ron Paul for 2012.

Given the choice between a long-term Senator, former presidential candidate and decorated war hero who spent 5 years in prison in Vietnam and the alternative: a newbie who had racist and communist friends, a shady past and questionable education who wanted to steer us toward Socialism I knew exactly who should get my vote.

I don't have any need to hold 'anarchism' like some game of king of the hill, you want the stupid word, have it. I know history and the anarchists in Russia and Spain were swiftly crushed by their statist communist rivals. In fact nearly every so called anarcho-communist society has been crushed by statists.

Also capitalism isn't actually hierarchical in the sense you are talking about. Capitalists have no power over workers.

I've come to the conclusion that Obama is simply playing off of the stupidity of the masses. Because no one would be that brazen unless they were relatively sure they could get away with it. For those of you who didn't know it, the whole birth certificate issue was brought up even before Obama was a senator. It got stonewalled then as well. Those of you who say, well why are you bringing it up after the fact...Ya, that sure is after the fact...

I have met people recently, and have known some, that will simply NOT believe anything bad said about Obama. It irks me so much when people let their biases get in the way of the facts. I will check out what anyone says, but I will not believe it until there is evidence to back up the claim. And there is enough evidence on this matter to do a lot more than just NOT vote for Obama in the coming election.

And it shames to admit that I was one of the fools who voted a fraud into office. Of course I didn't know that then, because not many people think to question the obvious. Obama knew that. He knew he could get away with it. Maybe not in the long run, but even that is a toss up at this point.

Well, it's nice to see that you waited until you were a mature, experienced person to make such a decision.[/sarcasm]

To you and all the others here that say Don't Vote: that is exactly what they want you to do. It takes fewer votes to get elected that way.

I would like a system whereby those who say 'don't vote' were actually prohibited from voting. Then one day the candidate of your dreams comes along, and loses the election by one vote to the most corrupt dictator on earth.

That'd teach ya. Or maybe not.

I have a problem with this assertion. What you are implying is that there would be widespread chaos without a valid, voted for government in place. But take a look at Belgium for example. I'm sure you can dig up more countries if you would try.

Next up, the analogy you use is actually a strong point in "my" argument. When all we've had is corruption in systems that have been upheld for years and years(sometimes centuries) we should take an innovative look at the problems we are facing with the system. You see, the system is supposed to correct itself with every new election in free countries - if the last elected leader was corrupt at least you can pick the next one - but the core of the matter is, the sponsors(like banks) that fund ALL candidates are one BIG source of the corruption. So the system is not functioning as it should, the source of corruption cannot be weeded out with new elections because it is a completely foreign influence.

Understand this then you will understand that by not voting one can also express they do NOT condone of how matters are being run in government, or how the government is being run. A non-violent protest that actually has the power to either change things or lay things out in the open(imagine if nobody votes and they claim someone won).

You are completely off the ball with your assertion.

Someone on this site once said

-"If you voted for Obama in 2008 to prove you were not a racist, then you have to vote for Ron Paul in 2012 to prove you are not an idiot". - wise person.

hah!

"Why would anyone vote for him?"

pride mostly.
