..first thing id do is destroy the oil companies and give back the people who really truelly need it, and mean really need it for means of survival, just thoughts like that yknow? like i said, i dont have the desire to learn the mechanics of spelling and grammer, seeing as the new gen is txt type savvy anyways...i know for a fact i am dumb in mathematics..but thats besides the point, im just saying, everything is based on power and greed i guess

Holy Jesus. This quote sums up case and point why people with no understanding of economics should refrain from commenting on things they just don't understand in an open forum.

Lets just say you'd be doing more harm then good by 'destroying' the oil market, most of the older guys may get a bit upset if world currency dropped off and we switched to gold standard as their pensions would be worthless.
See there's a bit more to it then just what you deem morally right.

Im 27, My stand point is that with age comes wisdom. Years of trial and error, witness as a testimony only comes with time. We will be in the seat soon enough. Have no fears young grasshopper.. patience.

The poster may be ignorant, but I have to believe that if more people with gumption like that stood up to the Fed, we'd be far, far better off.

That is assuming one is sane. Woodstock and disco, Woodstock and disco.. rinse and repeat. I guess at this point we need to come up with plans to make a better future for the generation just being born now and the generations that will be born after them..

I will not side with you or aid this wildly misdirected work.
Without Giving my age away I am well under twenty and totally disagree with you that younger people should simply take over, here are my reasons.
I learn every day something from my Parents and Grandparents I could not begin to imagine the trouble I would have without their advice, support, and yes sometimes Discipline.
Take a look around mate and look at the Idiots that young people are today I am simply ashamed to be in the same age category with a lot of them. The Modern geek today is a fat useless slob who on an average spends 6 hours a day in front of the TV or Computer they are totally brainwashed with the rubbish that they get a school (I mean the little that sinks in) they are totally and blissfully oblivious to the REAL issues out there many to easily fall for Environment Groups and spend the next few years running all over the country protesting this and that and making idiots of themselves. Then there is the drink/drug addicted maniacs who inflict billions of dollars for the vandalism they do kill each other over a girl/boy drive their Cars to fast and carelessly for their stupid minds to keep up the list goes on and on I could talk all night about the exploits of people under 25 but what would be the point I am sure you have heard it all before.
Now how many young people have changed their minds about at least one thing when they have put a few years behind them there wouldn’t be one on this planet who hasn’t? It is simply ridicules to say that a person who has reached the age of twenty is automatically capable of running a multi-Billion dollar industry/Country while ignoring a person who has spent 20 years of intense study and deliberation to fully understand the situations he may encounter and fine tuning policies to counter unexpected events and on and on and on.......
if I was looking at the two I know which one I would choose this is not to say that ALL young persons are like this just as not all older people are wise and considerate (some just never grow up) but the massive majority are MUCH more capable of knowing what is good for us younger ones than to unleash a pack of Lambs into a Wolfs Den.
This may surprise you but I do not mean to offend you Perhaps you have some other good reasons for your statements. Perhaps to you will see my side of the biscuit Lol
Cheers

As an 18 year old 'youth' I can honestly say I would fear for my life if our generation were given the power to start making the choices. The trouble with our generation is our ego. We believe we know everything yet everything is handed to us on a plate with no real hard work or thought injected into it. It is not a case of 'were younger and more enlightened and you're older and more stubborn' it is a case of humans working together collectively to sort out the mess were in. However impossible that may be.

And for that matter what has your generation contributed to anything?.

I admit the OP's idea is an unrealistic one... just as unrealistic as when the previous generation thought of it!

But I keep seeing you assume that all people from my generation are stupid, uneducated, spoiled etc....

With all due respect, what you are saying is stupider than the idea presented in the OP.

What has my generation contributed to anything?

Well you have given me a lot to work with... Allow me to give you a SMALL list of things my generation has contributed.

google
youtube
facebook
myspace
twitter
( All of which have been used in order to help bring freedom to countries sick of being run by tyrants)

Should I go into more detail? Should I go into government and political influence? In fact I WILL go into much more detail. I am in a hurry now, but watch out for my detailed answer to your close minded question.

While I agree there are stupid and ignorant young ppl, there are stupid and

Sounds like many of the younger people here are on their way to increased knowledge and wisdom. We need to ensure that the next generation has the tools to be a positive force in this world. We must hand down a torch lit with all the good pure knowledge we have discovered.

Though there is immense beauty still left in the world, our planet and its population also seems to be heading in a downward spiral. Intelligent, bright, young thinking minds need to be harnessed and developed. More importantly, good loving hearts and energy are needed to help shift our world from a state of disconnected separation to one of unity.

WE NEED THE YOUTH OF TODAY.

Sure leadership is usually reserved for more mature individuals, regardless of age.

Let's work together. It's not a matter of who is right. Every human being from infancy to very old age are important in our world. Each age bracket has vital pieces to the grand puzzle of life.

With age comes wisdom, but also stupidity.

You clearly learn more the older you get, but there's a point where you stop learning because you think you know it all already, or you're incapable of learning any more.

When you're young, you think you understand, but there's always that point in life where you realize you were still just as stupid as you were when you were 5.

Ive thought about this too but we have to remember that every generation does this. We look at our parents generations views and decisions and we learn from them. We look at what we agree with and what we dont agree with. They where brought up differently, they were brought up by parents that had probably TOTALLY different outlooks then us.

AND for you older members there that are saying our generation is dumber then toast....What did the generation before you think about you????? We all know what they thought about you lol

OK, just as I promised you I am back. Now I have time to answer your question in which you ask just what my generation has contributed to anything.

First of all, let me just say, how silly it is of you to assume that no one from my generation has ever done anything worth mentioning.

I know plenty of people from my generation who have accomplished much more than many people from your generation... And we are not arrogant about it...

We don't assume you guys never did anything...

Hey, we will gladly give you all the credit you deserve for the shape of Social Security

Thanks to that, we will never be able to retire which will only give my generation even more of a chance to continue doing amazing things.

That said, I wonder how many from my generation work for NASA, or are scientists now? I wonder how many are doctors and nurses. I wonder how many have made inventions that have changed the world.

I wonder how many have created charities and ran companies. I wonder how many are millionaires. I wonder how many have saved a life. I wonder how many are engineers and I wonder how many have helped their struggling parents from YOUR generation when they were unable to help themselves.

Quite a few...

Now I will give you one thing... Your generation sure has us beat in the music department.....

I wholeheartedly agree that serious change is needed, but it's the rich people that need to be banned from public office, along with lawyers and those with military backgrounds. How can these people possibly represent the farmers and factory workers? The wealthy, the attorneys, and the generals have NO CLUE on the needs and wants of the average guy living in an average home with his average family.

So are you suggesting a 'Logan's run' world where at age 30 people walk into a death chamber to be 'renewed'?

Nice.

I'd also like to say we need no one to "take over" as they likely be viewed
much like the "Red Guard" with little red books from the Maoists.

I think we need intelligent discussion much like Mr. Chomsky provides.

We need a fountain of smart, not a fountain of youth.

Smart does come in old and young containers too.

Talk about deflecting the ownus.

It's funny how the most starred posts in this thread are also the most immature and likely from the oldest people here
. If you could stop being so militantly defensive about your age group maybe we could... you know... talk about the POINTS...? What is this, a political campaign
? Haha, just kidding, this didn't cost me tax dollars from my low-income home.

So, allow me for a moment to divert away from from these 30-odd pages of this completely uneducated, arbitrarily defensive, agist fluff and let's talk about the things that younger generations are bringing up already that older generations have been weaseled into accepting over the years and totallyig screwed younger generations by letting them take over:

Banks stopped giving us interest on our money... we now pay them "service fees" for them to make money off of us... yes, this makes loads of sense. Also, there is no cap on the interest for mortgages, so the compound percentage just keeps going up and up. Younger people can pay upward of 300% markup just for housing. I wonder how the distribution of wealth got so skewed....

We are required to pay Insurance companies by law. They then, in turn provide, us with NO insurance when we need it. We have to pay lawyers to take them to court to get a fraction of what we needed back and the "system" is totally okay with that. Oh, did I mention that they just jack up your rates when you use their service so that in the next 4 months or so you've paid off what you used the insurance for and now you're paying double, if you're lucky, for a long, long time. Thank God for insurance companies, surely without them the population would get financially screwed...
.

Healthcare is controlled by insurance companies and the stock market (money) rather than the well-being of our citizens. Drugs these days legally have to tell you on the ads that they can kill you, but what you may not know is that they legally have to almost be able to kill you at this point because as a publicly owned corporation, they have a legal obligation to raise stockholder value above everything else. The best way to do this is to give you drugs that will just temporarily relieve your SYMPTOMS instead of actually FIXING THE PROBLEM just so that a multi billion dollar corporate entity can continue making insane profits off of a large population, and we're all dying for it, literally.

Almost all political problems stem from financial greed. Why don't we disallow corporations from funding election campaigns? Obama and Jack Layton got most of their money from personal donations via social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter (AKA, 'the devil' that none of you want to understand unless you're 40-50, female, and trying to connect to your family members). The most corrupt of these is that media outlets are allowed to sponsor political campaigns for private compensation... as a result we get a plethura of "news" on the TV that conflicts with the reality of things that we hear online from REAL PEOPLE (you would think that ATS of all places would lack this ignorance but apparently not). But nevermind, getting rid of the obvious problem is too much for the defeatist nation of boomers... This is generationally gapped because people in Generation X primarily get their news from an internet source that provokes discussion rather than a one-sided corporate entity gurgitating "facts" whilst in bed with political parties.

...Which brings me to my next point... I understand that you're old and life has thrown its share of curveballs at you, but can you please stop DEMOTIVATING MY GENERATION? I'm so sick of hearing you people complain about how "there's just nothing we can do" and how "there are just forces greater than you sometimes". OOOOH, okay
. Sorry, but I'm not about to drop anchor while this place is more of a company than country (unfortunately we went bankrupt ages ago but we'll just keep pluggin away :@@
. Last time I checked, our "forefathers" that you all claim to respect so much called this country a "democracy" for a reason. I'm also rather sick of having my friends being shipped off to other countries to get themselves killed so that some corporate entities can continue being in bed with American politicians. You can go ahead and chime out of your little hole in which you sulk, but I'll be over here doing something about it instead, regardless of how complacently pessimistic you want to be about every single subject. The internet is at my fingertips and I'm not afraid to use it, neither was Egypt, neither was Iran, what the hell is wrong with this hemisphere? Oh right, "There's nothing we can do
"...
. Hurry back to your $5.99 cheese"burger" and "fries", this situation is getting really complicated
(I'm not going to get into how this plays into the game they're playing with your health as I outlined earlier).

Other strong issues that young people have been bringing up:

-Law enforcement is uneducated about their actual laws. We have portable information access and most "kids" between 15 and 30 have immediate access to this information at their fingertips, why doesn't law enforcement?

-Why do we all pay hundreds upon hundreds of people to sit in an oversized room and sling insults at eachother and call it "politics" when we can all communicate with eachother and generally come to a conclusion that can encompass the reality of the situation rather than on an online forum or IRC?

-Why does the entire country pay for postal services? Who uses that archaic nonsense for naything but packages?

-Why does the lower class pay taxes to help support the business class? Why are large corporations allowed to get all of the tax breaks?

-Why do people who can't afford standard rent in their area still pay income tax?

-Why are the most complex and costly support systems in this country built to support the growth of those who are already succeeding?

But, anyways, what would I know? I'm 22 so apparently I just listen to Lady GaGa, watch American Idol, LOL on Facebook all day, and enthuse about anarchy/socialism. Trust me, it's what you told me I do, so it must be right because it's older. This "argument" isn't just complacent, ad-hominem tripe at all
... Oh woops, that got the most stars on the page I better watch out; can't make fun of "experienced" argument like this
. What was that you were saying about whiney complacency again?

Really, let's face it, "adults". We may have less grey in our hair (and i say less because I have had 2 'wisdom marks' in my hair since I was 11) but that doesn't neccesarily mean that we have more growing up to do than you older folks. And based on your "arguments" on this thread...
. All of that being said, the last thing this needs to turn into is a generational war, we know the problems, we shouldn't have to point fingers or uphold some sort of generational egoity. Let's try to fix them--together, something tells me it will be a lot more productive of an endeavor than this shadow-throwing nonsense. Just to end the immaturity battle that this thread has become: "My dad can beat up your dad. I know you are, but what am I." There we go, immature argument officially polarized. Move on.
