Witnesses say ship with 600 sunk near Libya

MILAN – A ship carrying up to 600 migrants trying to flee Libya has sunk just off the coast of the North African country, the U.N. Refugee Agency said Monday, citing witness accounts.

Witnesses who departed on another boat shortly after reported seeing the ship broken apart and bodies floating in the sea, Boldrini said. The second boat with witnesses aboard arrived later in Italy, she said.

At least three other boats that departed Libya in late March have disappeared, with hundreds feared dead, Boldrini said.

The article says that the ship "broke apart". Im not really sure what exactly that means or how it happened. Maybe these ships hit some of those sea mines?

The article also says this.

London's Guardian newspaper reported on Monday that 61 African migrants died of hunger and thirst on that ship after being ignored by a NATO warship and helicopter in March around the time the alliance was readying for military strikes against the Gadhafi regime

Aid officials were still trying to confirm the fate of those people after the vessel broke apart Friday in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya, UNHCR spokeswoman Laura Boldrini said.

Dosent look like they know what happened yet.

this is beyond words..our governments have raped their country of mineral wealth, and at the same time tried to to kill them with a virus called A.I.D.S and now destroy a boat with inocent people on board, only trying to get to somewhere where there is food and maybe safety...f**k all governments the world over...it will be us next..

Our (NATO) original purpose over there was to protect civilians.....How has that been working out? Didnt we kill one of Gaddafi's sons and grandchildren? I dont really undersstand why we're supposed to be over there anymore....

Libya was a productive and industrial nation. Aside from Gadaffi there wasn't anything wrong with the country, it was even considered "liberal" in the ME. We owe them nothing .. I'm sick and tired of people saying European nations and America "owe" something to these vagrant 3rd world countries. We don't.

Their ships are most likely sinking because the criminals that sell the tickets pack them beyond the capacity of the ship, which are probably old and unusable in the best of conditions. Same thing happens in ships from Cuba, Haiti etc.
