The stem was rather long of the cloud, I don't remember any break in the stem and I would say the stem seemed about 20 - 30% the size of the mushroom. I don't know what you mean by "skinny" ...

Minor update: Someone was telling me about a Solar Eclipse, It was an older man in a gray robe-like outfit. He was standing at a desk full of papers, his office I think, looked old not modern, then the scene of the cloud and shrapnel. The cloud was glowing in an orange-ish color.
