Scientists from Keele University found that letting forth a volley of foul language can have a powerful painkilling effect, especially for people who do not normally use expletives.

To test the theory, student volunteers placed their hands in a bucket of ice cold water while swearing repeatedly.

They then repeated the exercise but, instead of swearing, used a harmless phrase instead.

Researchers found that the students were able to keep their hands submerged in the icy water for longer when repeating the swear word - establishing a link between swearing and an increase in pain tolerance.

I'm not sure about all of you but I think I knew this already.

When I'm hurt, like stubbing my toe, or something like that, I go on a verbal rampage.

Swearing has helped me out of some bad situations.

When in doubt throw the F bomb out.

Any thoughts, or experiences?

It's more releasing psychic tension, than the actual slang itself.

If you scream into a pillow, you're going to relieve some pain as well.

The mythbusters did this. and I think they found that swearing did not "significantly" increase resistance to pain. Just a little though.

But it makes you feel Goooooooooooood!!!

for those who believe in transference of energy, physical AND emotional, cussing may relieve/reduce pain in the individual but what about the people around which you swear?

pooin relieves my bowels, but i like to poo in toilets, not on people

I liked the article. I think a lot of us already knew that, but its nice to see science back it up.

I have to respectfully disagree here. I think that is the majority of the threads and comments are anti US. The US is the largest government, mostly tan by corporations, who value the dollar more than life, who pollute the environment and pump everyone full of pharmaceutical drugs, now if that isn't saying the US sucks and needs to be revamped then I don't know what is.

And I bet most Americans here agree with me.
