AMSTERDAM - The whereabouts of Osama bin Laden was not as secret as assumed. Several defense experts knew two and a half months ago where Osama was hiding.
That is what defense specialist Rob de Wijk Friday wrote in a column in Trouw (edit: newspaper). In February, Van Wijk attended a U.S. Special Operations Force briefing in Afghanistan while doing research on the effectiveness of their actions against the Taliban. "At the end of the regular morning briefing, suddenly the home of Osama bin Laden was brought up for discussion, which turned out to lie north of Islamabad. The briefing showed confusion about the identity of a courier, " writes Van Wijk in the column.
"Bin Laden was still alive. It was obvious where he lived. He was being watched. But why was there no action?" asked the defense expert himself.
Van Wijk could not say anything during these months, as he had accepted a duty of confidentiality. "You're to be sued, should you make this intel public."
