Fear used for the rise of the cybersecurity-industrial complex

But defense contractors -- both tech companies and weapons makers - are profiting handsomely from fears of cyber attack that could steal sensitive information or crash computer networks and power grids.
Brito and Watkins quote politicians' dire warnings that justify generous appropriations and added federal control over the Internet.
"The notion that our power grid, air traffic control system, and financial networks are rigged to blow at the press of a button would be terrifying if it were

if it were true," Brito and Watkins write. "But fear should not be a basis for public policymaking."
The public has been given no substantive basis for such fears. Any evidence of real threats is classified -- reminiscent of the weapons of mass destruction evidence that the Bush administration used to justify the Iraq War.
The $100 billion Washington will spend on cybersecurity in the next decade may be less about guarding America from a real threat, and more about enriching revolving-door lobbyists and satisfying pork-hungry politicians.

Great, using fear again to control the public like sheep's. I remembered reading CNET and they had an article of China attacking America with comments already supporting the cybersecurity-industrial complex. This was exactly how we became a police state in the first place with terrorism used as a false pretext. People need to wake up out of the fear mentality, which I'm hopeful of because as 2012 nears, global consciousness is rising and their should be less fear.

Much like the days of old when the military industrial complex like Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Raytheon were and still are beating the war drum, Information Security companies are pushing up the wattage on cyber security.

First it started to "protect the children" from porn.
Then it went to don't open that email don't visit that website.

Now we are saying whole infrastructure will fail, and with the stunet (aimed at nuclear stations), the bad guys (whom ever they are) could install and hack the power grid, hospitals mass transit and lastly financial institutions.

Luckily for a very pinpointed attack you need money, strong techincal skills and time. Something most who wish to do harm to us (minus the state sponsored kind) don't have.

Thus you can focus your attention to the "big boys".
