Recently in November of 2010 my next door neighbour, due to her heavy drinking problem, died at the young age of only 30. She looked like an elderly old woman. Her drinking problem was hereditary in that she was Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. The alcohol was cause of her frequent "epileptic" seizures. Since the seizures were caused by brain damage induced by alcohol abuse thus the epilepsy medications were having no effect what so ever. We all knew that she would soon be dead, but no one could stop her. She would drink as much as a bottle of vodka per day. Some day a bottle of wine. Her favourite was Rose Wine. Rose Wine contains the addictive opiate GHB which by itself isolated is now illegal in the UK. She was so alcoholic such that to her palette sugar was having a revolting odour and disgusting taste. So that she always avoided sugar. Drinking "diet cola" as mixer with the vodka. Always cheap vodka since it was more likely to contain the illegal and deadly "methanol" as opposed to the legal but still deadly "ethanol". Her weight just kept on going down and down until she was a walking skeleton. I wonder if she still drinks alcohol now that her soul is on the other side ?

Some places are heavily populated, nothing like the United States though. Water and air for the most part are clean. However, if you're into "chemtrails", they can be found here as well as fluoride in the drinking water. But other then that, I'd say pretty darn clean.

Also, I wonder how many Norwegians still eat traditional foods, over the mass-marketed convenience alternatives?

Well, people enjoy a kebab or pizza here. But those come from independent shops (i.e. NOT Pizza Hut or Little Ceasers), they do have McDonald's and Burger Kings, but it isn't a staple in the Norwegian diet. Most families still buy a lot of fresh produce and make food at home. But frozen foods like frozen pizza's and the likes are also very popular.

Physical activity might play a part. Do Norwegians typically enjoy the outdoors?

Absolutely, soccer is played almost religiously here. Not everyone here has a car so they rely on their legs more so then what we do in the U.S. Also, people love nature here and you'll find a ton of people out in the woods at any given time. (Except maybe over the winter.)

Overall, people here are very active. The air is clean and the water relatively safe. Frozen and fast foods aren't as popular as they are in the U.S., but that's quickly changing. Hope this answered some of your questions.

The Harvard studies recently showed a staggering health improvement and extension of lifespan for having 4 drinks every 48 hours. This is despite any cancer risk increase.

Alcohol is a valuable nutritional tool. Just don't be a dumb ass about its consumption and you'll greatly improve your health.

I heard talking about cancer causes cancer

Everything in moderation is overall key. if your drinking like a fish, well, you will be lucky to make it to the cancer state anyhow.
If your drinking a glass of wine or some such a day..well, many a very very old people swear by it (or other such daily drinks).

But ultimately, the simple fact is for today that no matter what you do...something will kill you. If not cancer, then heart disease, or your kidneys go crap, or (etc).

If they want to truely help, spend the time and money investigating if alcohol causes cancer to instead curing cancer and not worry about this, or radioactive milk, or smoking, etc...
cancer causes death...fantastic...now focus in on how to get rid of it verses the 4000 different ways to get it

Alcoholic beverages are recreational drugs, right? Am I supposed to just say "no"?

Who benefits if we don't live long enough to collect our retirement pensions or draw on what we paid into Social Security?

Do the drug companies prefer it if I die a slow, painful death as long as I use a lot of medicines to ease my discomfort?

Do any of these factors prompt anyone to lead us toward making unhealthy choices?

Anything in too high of a dose will eventually cause cancer.

Alcohol can be wonderful for our health when we keep the amount low.

Agreed with the above. ^^
Almost everything in moderation is good for you. Too much of anything is bad no matter what it is. At least, this is what my grandparents told me and they lived to an old age.

Everything causes cancer these days, including the air that we breathe. Mayhaps these people would like to put a ban on breathing.

Besides, I can make any experiment come out to any result I want with enough tweaking.

This is actually old news. The conspiracy is that it is being kept from the public by the alcoholic beverage producers and their marketing.

In the Southern states about the turn of the century..a lot of people were dying of Pellagra a vit B3 deficiency..But those that smoked didn't get it...It turns out that nicotine is turned into nicotinic acid B3...bear witth me>> a few years ago if you got Alzhiemers disease, before the days of PC. The doc would tell you to start smoking as it seemed to slow or stop the disease....The latest research on Altzhiemers shows that large doses of Vitamin B3 reverse the process of Altzhiemers....see where im coming from....By the meddling of big Pharma for their profits...not withstanding the appetite depresant qualities of smoking....We are getting a collapse in general health due to Obesity..and a growing problem of Althiemers disease in the elderly.A collapse that far outweighs the damage of moderate smoking..and who benifits from dealing the drugs??its not rocket science...Now they are saying booze causes cancer....well the stress rise in not being able to unwind will push up the sales of stress related medications...and we the sheeple will have to pay!!!

Dr. Dean - I am delighted. So you actually know about vitamin B3 and smoking!. Its actually thought to be the reason that people with mental disorders smoke so heavily and is instrumental in controlling the delusions of schizophrenics. It is also beneficial for pregnant woman with toxicemia.

Additionally, the carbon monoxide in cigarette smoking is also quite beneficial. That is why more smokers survive heart attacks than never smokers.

I notice how Big Pharma has now come out with drug (NIASPAN) to try and mimic the benefits of smoking on lowering cholesterol.

Is it really that hard to believe, when in another study, they say alcohol is worse than Crack Cocaine or Heroin. That alcohol can cause cancer also, more ethanol if I read it right, not really that hard to believe really, Though if there are other studies people can link it would help debate.

www2.journalnow.com...

A link to an article on the subject, though it was already discussed here on ATS a while ago. The Washington Post also has an article on it , as I'm sure many other sites do. So the question really is, take the risk or don't take the risk? Cigarettes can cause cancer, people still smoke em, some die, others don't.

Alcohol is the same, drink at your own risk, some will die, some won't, though denying it won't help anymore than drinking it will. I don't remember where I heard this quote but I always found some humor in it, if anyone knows the correct version I'd love to know, since I can't seem to find it. "Life is a terrible disease, first you linger on for many years, then you die"

Maybe, depends on what type of alcohol, because the study is saying "Alcoholic drinks and ethanol are carcinogenic to humans and there's no evidence there's a safe consumption threshold to avoid cancer"

To each their own though, and at everyone's own risk.

Alcohol sterilizes objects, and it does so by destroying living organisms. So it's safe to assume that it damages many of the human cells in comes into contact with when it's ingested. And it's also safe to assume that the damage to living cells could include damage to the DNA.

What happens when you damage DNA?

Cancer.

Seriously, anybody with even a mild degree of intelligence should be able to make this connection. But we're all grown-ups, we can make our own decisions as to what to put in our bodies, right?

Oh that's right, we can't. Overreacting mod overreacts.

Anyway, most people functioning at even a moderately higher-than-instinctual level are aware that legality doesn't equal safety. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean that smoking "ILLEGAL ACTIVITY" is safe either, but we're all capable of investigating the matter further, looking into the actual science, and making an informed decision.

It's a bit late in this thread now, but...

Our modern western lifestyle, all the goods we purchase and use, all the heavily processed foods we eat, the toxin-laden air we breathe, the clothes we wear.. all of it causes Cancer.

Thousands of non-smoking, non-drinking people die from Cancer every year.

So, enjoy Life now while you have it.. you will have some form of cancer if you live long enough anyway.

Just enjoy each moment and don't worry so much.
