Relax. You mean the right thing - democracy is flawed because in many cases ignorant majority will vote over the wise minority. Dictatorship of the ignorant majority.
You just chose the wrong criterion to fix the problem - it should not be simply age. What about having higher education, having clean criminal record, not being long-term unemployed etc. Far better correlates of ignorance (or lack of it) than age.

Why not quiz the people before hand to see if they are intelligent enough to vote? Just like they should do with people that want to have kids.

I'd be careful if I were you! After reading your post, I'm not real sure you would pass such a quiz!

Furthermore:
Most sixth graders already know how to "have kids"! Maybe it would be a better idea to save "Sex Ed" for those getting ready to graduate from high school. You know..., as sort of a graduation gift...

do you let a 50 yr old that can't see good enough drive?

If we're going to allow a 16 year old to do that..., well, hell yeah! Why not?

So why let a 50 yr old that isn't in touch with reality or current events vote?

Why should you vote? You don't seem to be in touch with reality! Here's my proof:

It really doesn't matter who WE want in office and who WE want voted in. They are going to put whoever has been programed to play the part in there regardless. I used to believe my vote counted. Now I just don't care because nothing ever changes and each day that goes by gets worse and worse with no immediate solution in the future. Our government was built to fail... and they are well on the way to succeeding their goal.

If you want to be a defeatist, and stick your head in the sand, that's fine with me. Quite honestly..., I think that might be a good idea!

And maybe your 6th grader knows how to have kids, but that doesn't mean they know how to raise them! If you didn't know it takes more to raising a kid then just sex ed
. Saving it for a graduation gift? Are you retarded? That's the reason 16 yr olds are finishing school as mothers and fathers! The way things are going the next Baby Boomers are going to be in Middle and High School. Way to go!

If we're going to allow a 16 year old to do that..., well, hell yeah! Why not?

- and why can't a 16 yr old see?

Why should you vote? You don't seem to be in touch with reality!

- I don't vote because I AM in touch with reality. You my friend are the sheeple. Not me. So go ahead and waste your time voting and see where it gets you. Come next election you will still be bitchin about how you think your guy can do a better job. The system is a joke... much like your comments.

OK, this I've got to hear. Relinquishing your right to vote in America, a nation of roughly 300 million is going to prevent the destruction of "our species?" (At last count, the human population of Earth is roughly 6.7 Billion inhabitants.)

Please look up the word ethnocentrism and report back.

Well, why stop at the lucky educated, or perhaps the unfortunate unemployed? I mean, it's not as though the long-term unemployed can't possibly GET higher education right? It comes at the price of a song, correct?

Why don't we impose this will on those with freckles too, left-handers, those without blue eyes, those who DO NOT drive prius's, anyone with any form of cancer, Jews, (oh and probably Muslims too), farmers (because, lets face it, how could they POSSIBLY know anything apart from horse dung), rednecks, yankees, better throw blacks in here too for good measure they all like Obama after all.

the only reason they dont want over 50s to vote is because they are not brain washed to thinking that being a Nazi government is good...cuz thats what the states is...so if over 50s who probs dont agree witht hat stuff cant vote it gives all these pro nazi scum bags the chance to get elected

A firm understanding of Technology huh?
Well I'm 49 years old, and I've been an engineer since the mid 80's and have beed developing the technology you claim only young people can understand. Typical young EGO!
I have lived through the Cold War, I have been to Germany after the wall came down. I have seen Marxism revealed at it's core. Scare's the hell out of me how the university socialist's are indoctrinating the youth of today with political MANURE. No Obama is not a Muslum, he is a Liberation Theologist (religion). Yes he was born in Hawaii. I suppose you would want to also burn books written by anyone over 50. Pehaps the Constitution of The United States. George Orwell is turning in his Grave!

Last I checked this was about the elderly not me.

Check again!

The opening post was by a disgruntled Scotsman. He has since indicated disappointment in HIS decision to move to the US. Instead of moving back to Scotland, he wants to blame "old farts" in the United States for his misery.

Though I feel he is only "pissed" over the "weed" laws in the US, he proposed the following:

"anyone over 50 just needs to step back and let the people who have a firm grasp of technology and how the world works do the thinking and voting."

I didn't see the word "elderly" mentioned anywhere in his post. I did however see references to "The over 50's", "grumpy old farts", and the "out of touch". As his post specifically mentions two of my favorite peer groups, it entitles me to demonstrate that I may not be as "out of touch" as idiots like yourself, and the OP, may believe (I originally used the word "think", but it doesn't seem to apply to you two.).

You are a member of the "out of touch" group, so yes, the opening post is about you too. I certainly don't feel you "have a firm grasp of technology and how the world works". Your lack of writing skills, and lack of focus, demonstrate my point very well.

Either way it has no bearing in my beliefs and opinions.

Then, why the hell did you even express an opinion? After all, it was you that decided "It really doesn't matter". Don't try to lay that in my lap!

And maybe your 6th grader knows how to have kids, but that doesn't mean they know how to raise them!

Very good! I am VERY impressed! That is exactly the point I was trying to make when I stated:
"Maybe it would be a better idea to save "Sex Ed" for those getting ready to graduate from high school."

and why can't a 16 yr old see?

Are you for real? Quite often it's the same damn reasons a 50 year old might not be able to see! Do some damn research for a change!

Are you retarded?

Perhaps... What do you think? (As if I really give a damn!) Please use valid references though.

You my friend are the sheeple. Not me.

Hey..., I can be that mature (?) too...

I'm like rubber...
You're like glue...
Bounce off me...
And...
Stick on you!

You can put your head back in the sand now. It was nice to hear from you.

Because thats all that is needed or justified. You wont catch me with your slippery slope logical fallacies, geniocracy/meritocracy doesnt have to lead to such things.

I included long-term unemployed not because they are ignorant (altrough there is probably some correlation), but because its not right to have the same vote weight, which also decides where state spending goes, as someone who pays loads of taxes into the common tax pool, when you didnt put any money into it for a long time.

democracy is flawed because in many cases ignorant majority will vote over the wise minority.

You believe in:

Dictatorship of the ignorant majority.

Then you justify everything by:

Far better correlates of ignorance (or lack of it) than age.

I don't understand that, but it still indicates that:

Even if you win you are still retarded.

Thank you! I couldn't have said it any better myself!

Here ya go:

The United States Census Bureau considers a baby boomer to be someone born during the demographic birth boom between 1946 and 1964. This would make the first "boomers" eligible to vote in 1964.

The following is a "A Timeline of the Women's Rights" that we boomers were involved in:

1964 Title VII of the Civil Rights Act bars employment discrimination by private employers, employment agencies, and unions based on race, sex, and other grounds. To investigate complaints and enforce penalties, it establishes the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which receives 50,000 complaints of gender discrimination in its first five years.

1966 In response to EEOC inaction on employment discrimination complaints, twenty-eight women found the National Organization for Women to function as a civil rights organization for women.

1968 The first national women's liberation conference is held in Chicago.

1968 The National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) is founded.

1968 Shirley Chisholm (D-NY) is first Black woman elected to the US Congress.

1970 The Equal Rights Amendment is reintroduced into Congress.

1973 The first battered women's shelters open in the US, in Tucson, Arizona and St. Paul, Minnesota.

1973 In Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court establishes a woman's right to abortion, effectively canceling the anti-abortion laws of 46 states.

1974 MANA, the Mexican-American Women's National Association, organizes as feminist activist organization. By 1990, MANA chapters operate in 16 states; members in 36.

1974 Hundreds of colleges are offering women's studies courses. Additionally, 230 women's centers on college campuses provide support services for women students.

1975 The first women's bank opens, in New York City.

1978 For the first time in history, more women than men enter college.

1981 At the request of women's organizations, President Carter proclaims the first "National Women's History Week," incorporating March 8, International Women's Day.

1981 Sandra Day O'Connor is the first woman ever appointed to the US Supreme Court. In 1993, she is joined by Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

1984 Geraldine Ferraro is the first woman vice-presidential candidate of a major political party (Democratic Party).

1990 The number of Black women in elective office has increased from 131 in 1970 to 1,950 in 1990.

1993 Take Our Daughters to Work Day debuts, designed to build girls self-esteem and open their eyes to a variety of careers.

1996 US women's spectacular success in the Summer Olympics (19 gold medals, 10 silver, 9 bronze) is the result of large numbers of girls and women active in sports since the passage of Title IX.

That seems quite impressive to me!

Is there anything else you NEED help with?

See ya,
Milt

The unemployed have to pay taxes, when they DO collect unemployment, and when they DON'T the last thing you want is voter's who will maintain the status quo such that those unemployed can REMAIN unemployed, you want voters and votes from the boots on the ground...the ones who can help shape a difference. Their votes may actually be MORE important.

I think anyone over 50 just needs to step back and let the people who have a firm grasp of technology and how the world works do the thinking and voting. The over 50's should stick to gardening, and while we are at it we should make them sit an annual driving test, that could save thousands of lives. Why we let these out of touch grumpy old farts decide who runs the country is beyond me.

I'll bet you not one of the rabid idiots who brayed for years that Obama was really African was under 35. I'm guessing nobody under 35 thinks Sarah Palin is 'amazing' either.

We love you, old ones. Just leave the driving and voting to us eh?

It's official, the 60's are back. Only with us it was never trust anyone over 30

The concept of banning the most qualified voters from voting would only occur to a young immature mind. Everyone goes through that phase in their lives and then one day they wake up and realize you get wiser as you age, not dumber.

The current young generation does have more of an excuse than my generation did. We were taught critical thinking skills, which is no longer taught today. Even so, we thought the older generation were all dumb. Turned out, as it does with every generation, that as we matured we discovered that age and maturity make us better decision makers.

College students not being taught critical thinking.

A recently published study has found that many college and university students aren’t taught critical thinking skills while enrolled in their course of study. The study "followed 2,322 traditional-age students from the fall of 2005 to the spring of 2009 and examined testing data and student surveys at a broad range of 24 U.S. colleges and universities, from the highly selective to the less selective."

......As noted a significant number of students were unable to break out fact from opinion, make a clear written argument or "objectively review conflicting reports of a situation or event", the study found. In fact those students who fell into this category had a tendency to be swayed by emotion and political spin.

"Swayed by emotion and political spin" is the key point here. The younger and less mature you are, the easier target you are. You're easier to control and manipulate and your easier to convince that something is true that may not be true. Look at how Obama manipulated and still manipulates young people with transparent lies; the only transparency he brought to the White House.

Not to worry though, as your opinion will change dramatically on this as you mature. Just don't join the Bill Ayers crowd who preached the same and start blowing buildings up.

As a quick lesson in critical thinking -

Who would logically make the best choices and decisions:
A - The person with the least life experience and knowledge.
B - The person with the most life experience and knowledge.

In fact, it is a physiological fact that young minds don't develop full critical thinking abilities until about age 25.

Studen ts brains not fully developed...

The truth is that rational thinking and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to foresee future consequences based upon current behaviors, are underdeveloped in college-aged students. In fact, the latest neuroscience suggests that the brain is not fully developed until we are 25 years old.

Brain not fully developed until age 25...

A National Institutes of Health study proposes that the part of the brain that restrains risky behavior, including reckless driving, and thinking skills is not fully developed until the age of 25.

Take a deep breath and apply some logic to this topic. Once again, who would be better suited to make important decisions; a young person lacking experience and wisdom or an older person with many times the life experience and the wisdom. The answer should be obvious.

Blaine, I sure don't agree with a lot of things you say, but I absolutely do with this. Especially the critical thinking part (although of course, if it is 100% true, then there will also be no one left to even GENERATE those studies in the first place).

The only thing I want to add to that is, that even though all generations have visited this phenomena in their life, I have yet to see where a generation wants to actually erode constitutional rights in their fervor to push their agenda. In fact, it's always been somewhat the opposite; fighting FOR them.

Ok... so because the boomers were of voting age they are automatically responsible for anything that happens? What about all the Greatest who had been of voting age and were members of the government - you know the people who were actually in control of the country. Myself and my peers did not suddently claim responsibility for the wars in Iraq because we turned 18.. Your simple minded approach to this subject has turned me off, but I am happy to see you know how to copy and paste large amounts of text without giving any kind of input. You speak just like a stereotypical boomer - regurgitate the work others have done and claim it as proof of your superiority!

You think because boomers could vote they are responsible for the civil rights act of 1964? Brotip: No.

The bill was called for by President John F. "Definitely NOT a Boomer" Kennedy in his civil rights speech of June 11, 1963. The bill was sent to the House of Representatives, and referred to the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Emmanuel Celler, a Democrat from New York.
- Wiki page on Civil Rights Act en.wikipedia.org...

There were no Boomers in the House at that time... Johnson eventually was the one to pass the bill.

That seems quite impressive to me!

Being easily impressed with yourself is NOT a virtue.
