This is an interesting story, that was corroborated by a former military acquaintance who is also a GW1 vet. After his stint in GW1, this individual was involved in some military medical studies, and indicated to me that the military had knowledge that the bacteria involved was in fact bioengineered.

According to his story, this bacteria was activated by the high ambient heat of the Kuwaiti oil field fires (where the highest occurrence of Gulf War Syndrome happened). He indicated this is why US forces made such a mad dash into southern Iraq and occupied the oil fields before more of them could be detonated.

I am not sure if this is accurate, but I have no reason to disbelieve this individual.
