Be a man. Sign it. I had to. Every single other American male over the age of 18 had to also. In addition to being ineligible for federal government jobs, federal grants, loans..etc, most states have passed laws that require registration for STATE gobs,loans...etc, etc. In addition, some states wont even give you a drivers license unless you have registered.

You don't have to agree with the federal government. You don't have to agree with your state government. But you know what? Whether you choose to believe 9/11 was carried out by the Illuminati, the Israelis, the US government, or simply by a bunch of pissed of Arabs, the fact of the matter is people DO hate America. And someone needs to protect Americans.

Thats about the most illiterate thing I have heard.

First, just because people hate the US, doesn't mean they are going to pick up arms and go invade America. I mean thats silly. Thats really silly. And who do you think actually hates Americans? What nameless enemy have you been programmed to believe has a army of millions ready to invade?

Secondly, its like you are saying, people will only defend themselves if they formally join a military. 99% of young males (& females) anywhere in the world be willing to defend their home and country if invaded. They don't need to sign a paper to be forced to. Its a normal animal/human instinct to defend territory.

No, against the principles of several US founding fathers who believed that there should be no standing army, that paper is to be used to continue the US war machine and INVADE other nations and countries under false pretenses.

Fill it out kid! The Military is ...bloated, for lack of better word. In my state, most of the military branches are cutting off stuff like bonuses that would otherwise entice people to join. Besides, you could always claim to be an contentious objector(sp?).

Besides, the way I understand it, when they do a draft they go 21, 22, 19, 18, 23, 24 in that order or something. Me, personally? I'm going in after I finish Nursing school.

I never bothered to sign up when I was 18, I just kept hangin' out with the fellas on the block. Well...until I went to jail. 8 months in that place SUCKED!!! Once I got out, I decided I needed to grow up.

My mother's husband (then boyfriend), swindled me into a Marine recruiting office (he used my ego against me, lol). 3 weeks later I was on a plane to MCRD San Diego...long story short...best thing that ever happened to me!!!

I learned how to fix jets and it got me out of the "hood". Would I ever advise anyone to join? HELL NO! It just happened to work out for me. Now... I have been living in Japan for the past 13 years. Looking back I am grateful for the things that the Marines allowed me to experience, however, I'm glad that I got out.

Oh yeah...back to my original point of posting...I received a "Selective Service Distinguished Service Award" for some reason?!?!?
It was awarded to me about a year after I joined. Maybe they figured out that I never filled out that dang paper and just signed up. Who knows!??!??

Don't let that little form scare you. Fill it out and drop it back in the mail, and then HOPE that you never get drafted.

Well...I guess I'm done babbling now..

You should join an arm of the military for 4 years. I wish I had when I was able to. But I didn't because I was a bleeding-heart, spotted owl loving, tree hugging socialist. Now I'm a bleeding-heart, spotted owl loving, tree hugging libertarian that wants to go back and kick my own ass.

Talk about quote of the century!

If the paper work and other crap would ever end I should be in BCT by summer...I was hoping to already be there, but since I'm not a citizen yet the stack of paper work is a bit bigger.

Wow
I'm in the UK and never heard about this before. Imo it's not about whether there is a realistic chance of being drafted, it's the principal of the thing. Talk about Big Brother.... I'm currently fighting the UK 2011 census. Seems we are all under the cosh.

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW. I'm in Canada, 18, and if i had any letter to anything near that request, I would be on a hunger strike in the middle of Ottawa screaming my lungs out. As you should be.

I see more and more America is not a free country. Sure you have the crazies saying it, but as time goes by, a young 18 like me and 17 like you sure really question the word "Democracy". Personally, the word has no meaning anymore.

Time for a new democracy...Can't think of a word for it. Back in the day, they said "Time for a new monarchy" and they came out with a democracy. I guess it's that kind of transformation.

Good luck. Personally, I haven't signed anything from the government. My parents did. And last time I checked, my parents can't confirm that I wanted to be registered. So guess what?

Go ahead & sign it.. #1 we don't have a draft. #2 None of us that have volunteered would want someone to be there that was forced to be. I'm not saying that as a dig to you , I honestly think military service should be a CHOICE not a REQUIREMENT!

If all else fails and by some weird act of God the draft is reinstated, simply report to your nearest center and walk in smoking an herbal refreshment!

I wonder if every 18 year old in America has a 8-pages thread about the possible draft
.

But jokes aside that looks like srs bsns, I didn't even know you had that there.... even the worst warmongering countries in Europe have civil service by now. In those countries when you turn 18 you must choose between either civil or military service, the first one being a year-long work in some government facility (schools, hospitals and such).

relax. fill it out and don't worry a bit more about it. There will not be a draft anytime in the near future. They are turning down applicants right now. The military is fat for a Democratic presidency. You will be asked in the future if you filled it out. I don't remember where, but I do remember it being asked. It's a formality. If for some very unlikely reason you were called upon, look up consciences objector.en.wikipedia.org...

enjoy your youth, real life is nowhere near as fun.

I'd be careful about that one, a single Rothschild sponsored nuclear detonation at the Sears tower with a small nuke will change all that - just waiting for it to happen. Supposed to take out 5 city blocks.

Why in the world are you hoping for a stable government job. If you are so prepared to feed of the teet of the federal government, then you better be prepared to do what they say. How about you do yourself a favor and forego college (biggest scam in history) and get a job in the private sector and gain some experience. Are you serious???? You realize that it is just a technicality in case a draft is implemented? I would like to know what high school you attend that is churning out government drones that feel they can;t make it on their own.

Wake up and realize you are an individual. You will not be able to rely on anyone but yourself, and Christ of course.

The federal government IS the enemy!

I'm 17 and turning 18 in a week. Yesterday in the mail, i got a friendly letter in the mail from the Selective Service saying "it's time to register". I'm trying to decide what to do. I need to register to get Financial Aid (which we were counting on), as well as have any hope for a stable government job in the future.

I just DO NOT want to fight a war. It's not that i'm afraid of it, i just see myself and others as more than cannon fodder and would rather not fight a pointless war so the rich can stay rich. With the way the world is going, i wouldn't be surprised if the draft is reinstated within the next couple years. And i would be the perfect candidate. I'm 5'9", 135lbs and athletic (run distance in track).

What i'm hoping is that even if the draft is reinstated, i could have an exemption. I take Zoloft for anxiety and i know it's an exemption, at least for the voluntary draft.

Relax paranoid, you got to register no matter what when you are 18, doesn't mean to enlist.

No need for a second line.

Well, I'm 35 now and I didn't fill one out. Nothing ever happened to me. No big deal. But as others said you might need to if you plan on getting a government job....but who in there right mind would do that?

It is my understanding that once you turn 18 years old, it is mandatory for all males to fill out????

My advice, sign it.... Or why not join the service like the Navy or Airforce. You can get a great sign on bonus, training in a field, AND college money for when you get out! You may travel and see the world etc etc...Also, employers higher veterans above regular civilians.....

I joined the Army, got a great bonus, made many new friends, became more disciplined in my life, and when I got out had my entire college paid for!!! You also can get a nice home loan being a soldier! And, I didnt have to rely on anybody but myself to get there!

Not only that, but when I do eventually die Ive got a burial plot already set out and paid for! Not only were my parents proud, but my children are proud to know that their mother served to fight for our freedoms!

We are only free because we have fought for it!!

Just fill it out, a draft is unlikely to occur anytime in the near future. Fill it out not for the government, and the politicians but for the country and what it means to be an American.

Yea sign it up and join the liberation army of the U.S.A . Bring democracy everywhere and help children and innocent people.

Tbh... you guyz need to wake up and revolt against the country that uses you like meat in grind so they can win more money. I mean seriously what else you need to wake up? Someone to enter your house and rape you?

I am shocked that anybody would be mailed a letter such as this in a free country. Vanuatu does not require it. Australia does not require it. New Zealand does not require it.

Can I ask some of the American ATS'ers - Is this normal? I'm really hoping it's not.

It's not only normal, it is the law.

People have found ways around it in the USA, some choose to just comply.

Exceptions

Exceptions to this mandatory requirement include noncitizens in the U.S on visitor or student visas, members of diplomatic or trade missions and their families, prisoners, institutionalized mental patients, hospital patients and active duty military personnel. Institutionalized mental patients, hospital patients and prisoners who have not yet turned 26 years old must register within 30 days of their release.

Consequences

Failure to register before 26 years old can lead to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines (as of 2010). Even men who aren't prosecuted may find that many federal programs are no longer open to them. Federal financial-aid programs, federal job-training programs, federal jobs and U.S. citizenship all require registration with Selective Service.

LOL no one is called to duty nor should they be. The U.S. is getting worse and worse every single day and if you really think were called to duty then it is to fall for all our mistakes as a nation and we are doing that. America isn't a free nation anymore. They took away my right to play online poker a couple weeks ago. All just because uncle sam is a greedy #en bitch.I'm a part time player and made 60k in 4 years playing online and now its gone so # USA im moving out of here next year.
