That's a movie misconception, the lowest bit doesn't win contracts, a proven track record and accountability wins contracts.

It would take 8-18 months depending on the rout to get there, interesting.

To the poster who said that the government should be in charge of space travel; I say this. Take a look around you. The government can't even figure out a way to fund health care let alone space exploration. The only way we are gonna see Star Trek is to get NASA to give up the reins and let private companies take over. When you think about it what exactly has NASA done? Yes they went to the moon a half dozen times and thats it.

They waffle over everything. Hell they retired the shuttle with no back up??! Now our Astronauts have to thumb a ride on russian capsules. They knew for how many years that the shuttle was going to be ending its service lifetime and they did nothing. Now compare that to private companies say Airlines for example. A passenger Jet is nearing the end of its service life what do they do? They start on RD years ahead of the current models retirement so that when that Jet has reached the end of its life they have a new and improved model already to take over.

NASA as far as manned spaceflight goes is a joke plain and simple.

NASA isn't taking the reigns from anyone, nobody else is stepping up to the raw exploration table to the degree NASA has and it has nothing to do with NASA or U.S. Health Care expenditures. Your plight lies with the rest of the world's space agencies and not the U.S.'s.
