Taliban Help Hundreds Tunnel Out of Prison's Political Wing

www.nytimes.com

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — The Taliban staged an audacious prison break here early Monday, freeing at least 476 political prisoners through a long tunnel, according to the warden, Gen. Ghulam Dastagir Mayar.
He said that security authorities had discovered in the morning that the prisoners from the political wing of the building were gone, and that the authorities had just found the tunnel. “We do not know if the tunnel was dug from outside or inside the prison,” he said.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said in the statement: “We have planned and worked on this for five months, and the tunnel is 360 meters long,” he said. “This was very important for us; we were trying to not leave anyone behind, not even one sick or old political prisoner.”

Sounds like something out of Shawshank Redemption.

This isn't something new to this prison.

It was the second time there has been a major prison break at the Sariposa prison in Kandahar. The Taliban orchestrated the freeing of 1,200 prisoners, of whom 350 were Taliban members, on June 13, 2008, staging an attack on the prison that killed 15 guards.

How can this, after the first time, happen to this so called "high security prison" yet again?! With all these politcal prisoners one would think they would have better security than this, honestly, digging a tunnel right under the guards noses. Complacency?

Or perhaps a staged escape to bring the reasoning of staying in Afghanistan to further our war efforts?

Any opinions?

sounds like it would make a great movie, maybe call it "The Great Escape 2". They would need to use the same music though and they will need to jump a fence at some point on camel back.

Sky news UK said that 100 taliban "commanders" had bust out in the break.

That means more hurt for our forces, which I think is bad weather or not you support the war.
That is if they are proper commanders, and go back to fight.
They could be goat herders for all we know,MSM news is so controlled these days IMO.

I agree, the media (which I believe to be strongly influenced by the government) may be just fueling the people to think that "it is ok" to keep the war efforts going..

“We have planned and worked on this for five months, and the tunnel is 360 meters long,” he said.

So the Taliban were only about 300 meters outside the prison and no one noticed??

Were they carting away loads of dirt and the guards didn't click??

I smell a few bribes here....

Its a real nasty situation IMO friend,
Having viewed this documentary on the links between the drug war and the war on terror in Afghanistan, the whole situation seems beyond our ways of fixing it.
We seem to be unable to stop the massive heroin traffic,as those high level smugglers are high in the Afghan government.
You know those people in the Afghan Government-we send our bright young folks to fight to PROTECT them, and they die for them.

Why the hell is this going on for God's sake???
Are we all mental or so subdued by TV and Junk food that this is OK?

This will never be OK IMO.
People I went to school with are DEAD for nothing becuase of this $%$^

I am SICK OF IT.

Maybe you need a UK proxy
to view if you are not in the UK for the above link.
But its very much worth a watch if you can IMO.

I do agree, we are fighting a sustained war just for the benefit of the government.

Drugs, oil, natural gas, etc. whoever owns the product owns the market. With the threat of our dollar being denied as the federal reserve note, it would make sense to invade these countries to gain ownership.
Sadly, the people will suffer for it. Our men and women in the military don't "choose" where they go, they are told to go do something and they do it, no questions asked. Shoot first ask questions later.

About the drug thing that I find interesting, the Democratic and Republican parties are Blue and Red.

The Crips and Bloods are Blue and Red. coinsidence?

I think it may be more than that.
