The buildings we build are infinitely more complex than ant tunnels (impressive as they are), and as someone who has worked in construction for decades I can assure you it takes much more coordination than digging holes in the ground. I think the vast majority of people in this world take their environment completely for granted, they have absolutely no idea the incredible efforts that go into keeping them warm, dry and comfy.

Sorry dont agree. I have worked on constrution too. Every thing from concreting to building and i was a roofer for the most of my time. I can tell you that building a box with a roof above ground is the easiest to do then building a construction under ground. Humans cant even do that properly, as how many mining collapses have us dumb arsed humans had lately.??????
So the ants ARE smart, and the building that creation was a magnificent peice of building ( Consruction) and i reacon that you and your builder mates cant recreate what the ants built. I would love to see you try to build it.

Im not sure anyone could build what the ants did underground but humans do build underground bunkers

Agreed we humans do build underground bunkers Sugar,
But when a human does it, it takes a person with an engerineering degree with about 20years of an education with hundreds of years of combined human experience that cost countless billion's and then the bunker cost's billion's of dollars of tax payers on top of that.
So my belief is that we have learnt to build bunkers from watching ants or us humans have a lot to learn about building our bunkers from ants as the ants are MASTER builders.
Us humans still have alot to learn from nature and about the beauty that surrounds us all.
It is a wonderful world my friend.

Collective will verses free will is almost what we have now with the USA alongside China.
We are what free and diverging individual will and notions produce.
They are what collective will (and slavery) produce. If we can't even get together and agree on anything as a country how can we get together as a PLANET and save ourselves. We can't. As great and desirable as free will is for us it also spells death and leads to the end of humanity.

I actually breed and collect different ant colonies, sounds slightly odd but we all have the odd hobby and interest here and there.
I would just like to point out that the type of ant in this video is fairly notorious for having some of the most complex ant nests. This is largely in part due to this species diet, which is the fungus cultivated using mushed up leaves and other organic matter (on the most part vegetation of some sort). The fungus, some strains of which is only found in ant nests, requires the utmost regulation. The temperature, humidity and ventilation needs to be just right.

Most other ant species create nests way below the complexity of the ones shown in the video. Don't get me wrong they still show an astounding understanding of their environment.

An anecdote from my own ant breeding is when I moved the tank of one of my ant colonies on the window sill of my room. The sun would now hit the side of the tank facing the window. It was then I noticed that the ants were busy excavating new tunnels, and it was one week later that I saw a new chamber on the side of the tank facing the window. The ants had moved all their larvae and eggs into this chamber, my understanding is that heat speeds up the development of their larvae. To me this showed that ants have an incredible understanding of their environment, and will constantly adjust themselves to maximize their utility.

The fact of the matter is, they didnt. I watched the particular show in which they done this. The anthill was deserted for a long time.

Yes we have done much more, however an anthill of this complexity coming from an insect species which compared to us have relatively small/primitive(or not so much) brains, shows how much we dont know about the world around us, and all the different species of animals..Many of us still dont get that we're not the only intelligent beings on this planet.

I wonder what a more advanced species will do when they come along to study us? Wipe us out and then study us. This is both amazing a quite sad, there has to be ground radar, infered or some technology where this could have been done without the killing of the entire colony.

the ant farmer noticed that his ants adapted to their enviroment.. we can't, we destroy our enviroments (strip mining.. deforestation etc).
Ants communicate using pheromones we depend on devices created by ourselves.
Ants are far 'higher' than us..
perhaps we don't belong here (?)

Thanks very much for posting this video, I watched it with my wife and daughter and we all found it fascinating.

Such a great combined intelligence at work and very artistic to look at, we've got at an ants nest under our house, and I admit, we've used all sorts of nasty stuff to try and get rid of them over the years but they ain't budging. Most ant killers seem to have the same active ingredient, Permetherine or something similar it's called, I think the ant's are immune to it though.

I've got to admit after watching this I feel a bit guilty, maybe the reason they won't budge is because they have a similar complex system under my dwelling. They don't show through the winter but there's a lot outside in the summer, we only get the odd few in the house though and only in summer.
