Details are slowly trickling out about Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s secret, week-long trip to China with nine other senators. The lawmakers have given out minimal information about their itinerary because of supposed “security concerns.” Last checked in, the intrepid congressional delegation (or codel) had paused in Hong Kong over the weekend, likely morphing into a shopping delegation (or shopdel).

www.washingtonpost.com...

Interesting.

I would assume this is in regards to the dollar and/or large shifts in reserves/investments...
However it may just be a friendly visit to put a face to the debt.

My money is on all the fiscal moves the Chinese have been pulling lately. "Please stop. Pretty please?" There is definitely a message being sent by the Chinese to us lately.

We've been put into a position where a former (current?) enemy can pull the toilet chain and we'll be in some serious sh#t. These guys are there to try and move 11 corks around for 12 holes in the boat.

Guess I should wish them the best.

I feel its the first scenario you mentioned. Anyone who's watching, or has just taken a glimpse at the International trade market this year, can see the USD (US Dollar) is falling quite fast as the preferred exchange currency. I hope I'm saying that right, ha.

I read the Washington Post article and found it strange that the reporter was writing as though discussing cheap celebrity gossip. I assume it's a diplomatic meeting concerned with international investment and mutual profiteering, but really couldn't glean anything else from such a weakly written article. It's interesting as to what their agenda actually was, but I won't be jumping to any further conclusions.

Although it is definitely worth keeping an eye on economic events relating to China in particular. Seems as though they're always hidden behind a cloud of secrecy and have been forever. The way the US dollar is going, things don't look for their economy.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the last figures I saw showed that China only bought 10% of our debt.

10%.. if that is correct, then they really don't have as much power as many people claim they do over our situation.

Either way, everyone seems to be trying to screw everyone else..

Gloves off, do it open and get it over.

Everything I have ever read, heard and seen says that China has been the biggest holder of our debt for several years with Japan coming in at a close second.

US Congresspersons have been going on these types of "junkets" for as long as I can remember....which is a long time. After Rep Tom DeLay made his famous Scotland junket about 10 years ago, changes were proposed.

DeLay's Scotland trip

New rules but not too much change.

So, no, I doubt this was anything high level.

Its a secret trip because of the fact its Senators. The Dems arent the only ones to pull something like this, as a few Epublicans are in that neck of the woods also to discuss regional security. They use the term secret because they wont release the schedule itself for the senators for security reasons.

the main reasons for Harry (could'nt reid) Reid in this are two:

1. the Las Vegas casino cartel has gigantic investments in China (Macau) and Singapore.....it is dwarfing the main LV "strip" revenues !

the LV cartel also runs 99% of all gambling operations in most states where gambling has been legalized.
i.e. the Harry Reid power cartel !

they even have "management contracts" with the American Indian owned casinos.

2. Nevada has a big solar power contract with a Chinese company.

chinasolarenergy.blogspot.com...

i must be careful with quotes and links however, most are local Las Vegas sources.

A-T-S is under a Las Vegas news lockdown per legal actions.

many posts and threads have been deleted when referring to any sources from Las Vegas.

google searches will yield much info .....

Good. The USA invested in and gave technological help around the world for the oil industry (China in the 1970's, helped Nixon "open up" China). So China is paying us back by helping us enter the 21st cen.

Thought you might find this interesting. some solar in Calif

BTW, yes, gambling and solar....business connections are traditional junket purposes

Maybe they were helping to plan the raids on the Chinese Christians that went down on Easter Sunday.

But seriously, this is a bad sign. And immediately after they step foot out of mainland China the raids happen.

Think China is pissed...Just wait....

Hong Kongs economy is torn between US an China and is expected to fail soon.

www.marketwatch.com...

The city has been a big beneficiary of the U.S.’s low-interest rate policy, which fostered an environment where it was possible to borrow in U.S. dollars and invest in Hong Kong assets at minimal risk.

The trade was attractive in part because Hong Kong pegs its currency to the U.S. dollar, while its economic cycle tends to follow activity in mainland China.

It’s a mismatch that means prices for property and other assets rise quickly during an up cycle, but can fall just as sharply when the cycle turns.

In fact, Lai is worried that a massive turn could be at hand within the next two quarters.
