If Harper wanted to be able to actually do this, he would need to ammend the Canadian Constitution, which requires a minimum of 50% of Canada's population's consent via PROVINCIAL LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITIES.

He would require either Ontario or Quebec to back him 100%...it is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

Interesting thread. I've got to study Canada's government more and understand it.

I doubt this is a serious issue, but if it were to happen, as far as the people it's impossible to tell us apart for the most part. People and our lives are very much alike, so no real problem there from reasonable people.

We maintain our own cultural differences by each State having it's various rights now. That is one of our biggest problems here is the crowd that want's to usurp States rights. I might even move to the State of Yukon

I don't really know how I would feel about this personally. Not much would change in our lives I think. This discussion is interesting in that even if Canada wished to do this, I think the chances are slim our government would. Takes two to Tango.

I'd think a better option would be to have an open border with Canada. It should be that way now. What differences we have don't extend to such extreme cultural differences that it would matter anyway. The only place I've seen any evidence of U.S. Haters in Canada was in White Horse, in the Yukon. They were mostly upset about our environmental nuts taking away their jobs and we hate them too. We could make fun of them together.

Perhaps that woman I talked to in Yukon, who was convinced that the U.S. was completely devoid of trees could come here and see how badly she was misinformed. I still won't like Yukon Jack however

I did meet a man in Sams Club one day that was a Canadian who was living and working here in Anchorage. He went off on a rant about how Alaska is part of Canada and he was not in the U.S.. Funny guy He overlooked the fact Alaska was purchase from Russia, not Canada but hey, to each his own.

Ignore me. I'm trying to make light of the handful of angry people in the US and Canada who hate each other. I've always been treated well when crossing Canada. Even made friends with an America hating crowd in a bar in White Horse while they informed me how horrible we are. Oddly they did not know I'm fairly typical for someone from the rural western states here and since they liked me, they would like most of us. I agree about the rude crowd from the east coast though. They are way to angry and arrogant for me also.

Funny, there seems to be a whole lot of propaganda drifting around about Canadian healthcare as well.

Maybe it has a lot to do with American's not wanting Canadian healthcare and Canadians not wanting American healthcare...but, both suffering from idiots in power that want to change it...go figure.

"If you have an ailment that will kill you in 6 months better get to America"...why would a Canadian want to do that? Most Canadians that go south, go for 2 reasons.

Reason 1) The treatment is not available in Canada. Both countries have different standards boards. Many Canadian will travel south to partake in more 'experimental' (not good or bad, just not as tested) treatments that are not allowed in Canada.

Reason 2) Impatience. Now, this is not impatience for the vast (and I do mean vast) majority over CRITICAL treatments. These are mostly people that don't want to weight 6-12 months for a hip replacement. Or in my father-in-laws case, a knee replacement. Canadian healthcare is entirely based on urgency...which is why issues that, although painful, are not life threatening will be put off to provide service for those who are critical.

If the FTA was this strongly debated there would be even more debate and opposition to what the OP posted and Quebec would be gone in flash, they will NEVER join USA, they are almost a different country within Canada itself.

One thing I noticed there that bothered me a lot, is that I could not just pull off the side of the road in the wooded areas in the Yukon and camp. Made that mistake and a Mountie let me know you have to go to a campground and pay. Seemed like no access to enjoy that land. You don't have genuine publicly owned land do you? It's all owned by the Queen or some silliness?

As much as I dislike the Conservative government at this time, this thread smells oddly like scare tactics. This is coming from someone who's still voting against a Conservative MP come May.

Sure there are Canadians who seek treatment down in the states but it's only because there are more specialists down there, not because our health care is inferior. The only people who might want Canada's health care system to fail is the doctors because they can't make as much as their American counterparts. That's not to say that they still don't make a whole crap load of money. People are greedy. What ever happened to people wanting to become doctors to help their fellow man, not to fill their pockets?
