The government is adopting a simple, two-tiered alert system to warn the public of terrorist threats and possible attacks, Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano announced Wednesday.
The highest warning under the new system will be called “Imminent Threat Alert,” and will be triggered by “a credible, specific, and impending terrorist threat against the United States,” Homeland’s guide to the National Terrorist Advisory System says.
A second, less-severe warning is called an “Elevated Threat Alert.” It warns “of a credible terrorist threat,” the guide says.
