China has decided to crackdown on internet pornography. Enlisting the help of its citizens it recieved more than 700 calls and 16,000 online tips helping them to shut down these 700 sites since July 16th.

BEIJING (AP) - Chinese authorities have shut down 700 pornographic Web sites in less than two weeks as part of a massive campaign to clean up the Internet, the official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday.

Citing figures from the Ministry of Public Security, Xinhua said 224 suspects have been detained since July 16, when the crackdown began. No details were given on those cases.

Since it publicized two telephone numbers and a Web site for people to report porn sites, the ministry has received 733 phone calls and 16,711 online tips, Xinhua said.

I think it would do America good to take notice of this and start shutting down the pornographic websites here as well. They are too easily accessible to children if you ask me.

IF america started to shut down porno sites like china did, AMERICA would be stripped of yet ANOTHER freedom...

china is NOT free so the government CAN do this and the people HAVE to accept...

america IS free so the government CANNOT do this and the people do NOT have to accept...

America should WANT to accept something like this. Pornography is TOO ACCESSIBLE to underage children. You just have to type in certain words that typical kids would type into google and it takes you straight to porn. I know that I don't want to see that, and I'm 25. I don't want to take away freedoms but the pornography industry should be limited to pay per views and rentable movies.

deeprivergal...I agree. Its to easily accessable and even when I look up something on a search engine, most of what comes up is links to that stuff. I really dont want to have porno pop-ups all over my computer, and that is what happens, even on regular sites. I think that this type of stuff needs to be monitored, and while I dont want freedoms taken away, this is something that I could agree with our government on if they ever did something like China!

It's hard to generalize what America wants, a diverse population will have diverse (or perverse) interests (do we ALL want Michael Moore?). I personally feel the same way as yourself about the accessibility of pornography by children (and some adults, no need to encourage some to breed), but the Supreme Court has ruled on this subject, and cited the First Amendment Rights of the purveyors of "Blue Material". The problem is the slippery slope, do we want pay-per-vote, or "rentable rights"? Personal responsibility plays a part here as well, the parents need to be aware of what their kids are exposed to, and if that means purchasing watchdog software or limiting unmonitored time with a computer.

It is the jon of the parent not the government to prevent its children from looking at porn.

If the government did do this, we would lose freedom. Then our government would be deciding for us what is ok for us to view and whats not ok. The government should not make morality choices for the people.

Parents have the responsibility over their children NOT the Government. The government is way too intrusive in our lives now. Parents need to limit the access to the computer/internet to times when they can supervise and or add netnanny or some similar program.

To say the government should eradicate porno on the web so kids can't see it is akin to saying we should outlaw gun ownership so a kid can't shoot himself or someone else. It just isn't the right response, parents need to do the work of raising their kids NOT my tax money...

Good on em!

Porn in the Internet is WAY TOO ACCESSIBLE for kids!

I had one of my neices over and was on the Internet. I said tell me what your interests are and she said soccor and "something else I can't remember"...I did a google search and BAM.

The first page was filled with porn sites.

As for those people who rant about "freedom of rights"...well, you have to balance that with the potential of children accessing porn. Personally, I think it's a typical reaction for fear of not being able to get free porn and having to pay for it.

As for those that claim "It's the parents reposibility", yeah right. Children know how to use the Internet better han their parents (percentage wise) and it's dead easy to get access to a web site that's not listed on netnanny etc etc.

An easy way to solve this is:

1) Create a porn gateway to ALL porn on the Internet
2) Provide ANANYMOUS access to the gateway for adults
3) Have HUGE fines for those putting porn on the net independently.

This solves the problems:

1) Free access to porn is still allowed for adults (and their rights)
2) Children are blocked from the porn on the net

It's got me totally stuffed why the gov'ts don't implement something like this; it's easy to do, doesn't corrupt a child's mind and provides ANON access to porn for us adults.

But, as usual, it's all the "do-gooders" who have no life other than jumping up and down on their little "box" so they feel important and relatively worthy of life.

Cheers

And that is why parents should take precatations to hide porn.

When using Google, make sure you have it so that your search results will be filterd. Anything that is nudity or violent will be blocked. Also do this.

Go under "Tools" and click on "Internet Options". This is for people who use Internet Exploer (IE). Then go to the tab "Cotent". Once there you will see "Content Advisor". Click on that. There you can create a ratings system that will block sities. There is a slider there you can use to edit how much nudity, language or violence you want to see.

Or you can use a "Net Nanny" like device.

No one person or group should be allowed to control the internet. I do think that porno sites should all have that warning "Not Viewable by those under 18, if under 18 please turn back" on the front page, and nothing else there and a description of what is on the site. Then if you do not want to view it don't click it.

People who want to look at pornography should not be punished and have their right to do so, since a bunch of lazy parents can't protect their kids right. If you have a son around 13 or 14 he will be looking at porn, either on the net or looking for dad's Playboy stash. Its natural, alot of people did it.

Let me first say that I think it's important for everyone to be able to express themselves as they wish. Let me also say that I think the government should not be Mommy and Daddy and should not be in the business of censoring people.

That said, I think it's wonderful news that some overseas porno shops are being shut down. Why? Because who do you think is responsible for flooding our inboxes with porno ads that no one wants. Overseas porno shops!

I have no right to criticize the Chinese culture. If they're against porn that is their choice. I just happen to be thrilled that maybe I'll be getting a little less spam this month.

JediMaster:

yes, it is possible to filter out porn via the "basic" methods and I know kids 13/14 will probably see their dads porn mags, however consider two things:

1) The level of porn on the net is WAY WORSE than any playboy/penthouse mag you will ever buy (ie bestiality, scat and a host of other sick fantasies)

2) Any kid can get around these by:
a) Doing a lookup on the domain to find the IP address
b) type in 1.2.3.4... (or whatever the IP is)

The other worrying thing is that the publishers of these sites are living their own fantasies and, once you've lived a fantasy, you look for the next fantasy...that's why we've gone from "good taste" porn to the sick crap we're seeing today.

Cheers

Yes I will admit to you that the level of sick in porn has increased drasticly. Ever hear what they have in Japan? Sex machines, using fecal matter, abuse of women. Truly sick stuff and trully disturbing stuff you'll see on HBO at 1 am. The decline of our society, which has become a cynical "I only care about myself and no one else" attitude and its going to bite us back.

Agreed. There is not subsitute for good parenting Period. Do you really want the Federal Government resposible for teaching our children morality and virtue? Porn in the hands of a child should be prevented, and it can be without violating all of our rights in the process.

One thing I have noticed with web sites that possess Adult content, some are not protected all that well, there should be heavy fines for that. Those that are protected (such as a credit card check) are fine. However even that is not perfect. One thing they could do, is provide a survey like form that is like 5 pages long. In it, are questions that only someone of age would be able to know. The survey should be updated with new questions every 3 years.
The moment we allow our system to dictate what people do or enjoy goes against the ideals of freedom and the persuit of happyness.

For the parents who don't want to monitor their kids maybe the government can put controls on your life or your kids like you want. Maybe the government could start an opt in list and if you live in a restricted household as determined by both parents calling in, then anyone who logged into the net from that house could have a special code. Then, if you didn't have the right code (ie kids) then a special kids only internet could be available for them. Let's work on restricting those who want to be restricted, not everyone else. I don't want to give up any of my freedoms because some parent is too lazy to monitor their kid or restrict use of the pc. If you can't trust your kid now, you certainly won't be able to later after they moved out of your house. Restriction of information is censorship and as a grown adult, I do not want my information restricted because of an oppressive government or some lazy parent. If you really want to be controlled, just move to China.

What kind of savages are these people? It one thing to kill girl babies and gun down peaceful protesters but shutting down porn?

They have crossed the line.

Seriuosly what do you expect? There people on this board that would like to see that kind of government censership here. Some governments (and people) wont be happy unless we are all mindless drones goosestepping to THEIR drummer.

You know, I think what's bothering me is that there just are no limits at all to what My Freedoms must be defended for.

No sense of limits, or decency for the common good? At the expense of our children?

The internet filters are a crock. I know parents who have to turn them off for their kids to do homework, or for them to do a medical search. They are not designed to just filter out porn. When they are on you end up limiting a lot of science and medical information too.

What is the redeeming value of porn other than the expression of My Freedom? Fine, if you want be free to access it, but not fine as far as I'm concerned at the expense of our kids.

Where does My FREEDOM end and and MY SELFISHNESS begin anyway?

It goes deeper than "rights". There is no "innocent" porn. If you support the mild fluffy stuff, you are also supporting the abusive, stuff, the stuff where girls are drugged, kidnapped and worse....I know what I am talking about here. Yes, there are people who do it for kicks....but how many porn watchers are checking to make sure it is done by "consenting" adults? NOT to mention that when children view porn, it creates a false idea of what it is to be between two people.....boys actually think it's supposed to be that way....well, sometime it is, depending on the couple, but more often it's not..
