things like that are only going to happen today because of man. There is plenty in this world to go around just too few that want to keep it all to themselves.

There are some pretty powerful women gobbling up the landscape, too.

You know I was talking about mankind in general.

Sometimes being politically correct is just plain ridiculous, and alas creates more division.

I understand what you said. Kind of like you can't say Mailman anymore. You got to say Mailperson.

Where I live, you can't call them either one... they're just 'contractors' now. Sort of like the mercenary barbarians hired into the Roman Legions.

I still can't figure what this thread is about. Are we still comparing Rome to the US? Or is it just about the US?

I asked that question ages ago, before Hadrians Wall got built.

Still not sure.

Have to say, though, that a Republic is a Republic, so there's at least a modicum of similarities.

(always wanted to say 'modicum'
)

Almost all empires collapse for the same reasons:

1. Too many people are allowed to not pay taxes.
2. Too many of the other, overtaxed people turn to crime to survive.
3. More police/army is needed to fight crime.
4. Military forces get spread too thin fighting crime in far-away places.
5. Taxes are raised to support the military.
6. Tax revenues eventually drop so the military goes underpaid.
7. Local wealthy landowners hire their own armies.
8. Smaller states battle and win their independence.
9. More battles, fewer states, less taxes, less military.
10. More wars, eventual collapse, dissolution of the Empire.

It's comparing the collapse of the Roman economy by illegal immigration and welfare, as it relates to today's economy, not only in the United States, but around the world.

But, then again, the comments have gone all over the boards. So there's really no telling what everyone's talking about.

This whole debate is too ridiculous for words.
I saw something similar on fox ( I was only watching for a laugh), glen beck had his blackboard and chalk out.
The audience were sitting there like 5th graders as glen beck began to compare, national Socialist, communist Socialist and democratic socialist, suggesting they were one and the same.

Can any Americans explain whats happening?

Whoever it was that asked me about the Bhagavad Gita and Ancient Aliens and nukes and stuff....I started a topic that is in Ancient Civilizations.

Those of you who hate the History Channel probably don't want to get involved.

But, I was asked.

Wrong!

All Empires collapse because of a monetary system that brings on greed eventually leading to corruption of the governing body.
This is allowed by the people that live in the society because they get too lazy and complacent.
When all this is accomplished the empire/society is ripe for whoever comes in and takes it over.

In the end MONEY was the only thing that was the cause of it all!

Right now there are things going on outside this world that are being hidden from the American public. I have a very good idea and why, simply because America will be destroyer literally soon and most just sit around saying, "That will never happen; Not in America!"

Sad thing is most people I know think like that, as they believe that America is so much better than anywhere else. I agree to an extent and that's only because the concept behind the founding of USA is the best any society could have. It's only downfall is greed and corruption running rampant while watching American Idol or such.

I am ashamed of Americans because of their blatant ignorance and belief that nothing is ever going to happen to their precious way of life.

This is what happened in Rome, the Senate wanted more power and so took out Caesar. Probably what happened to JFK!

I've been watching the History Channel biographies on Attila the Hun.

Oh, so you watched the entire History Channel biography of Attila the Hun in...what....like three minutes?

Those of you who hate the History Channel probably don't want to get involved.

You say the History Channel has no credibility?

All of this leaves only one question of course;

Do you work for the History Channel?

Discredit the History Channel with your set of facts.

I believe you have done quite a good job at discrediting the History Channel by merely relaying what you watched.

This thread has been entertaining, thank you OP. Now I know that Rome was brought down by these illegal immigrants who went along with Atilla the Hun's plan of bringing down Rome by applying for welfare!

But you never answered my question several pages back .. the Hunnic Empire collapsed when Attillas son's struggled for power and were eventually killed by Germanic Tribes.. one year after Atillas death. If the Hunnic Empire collapsed long before the Roman Empire, how on earth did their "illegal immigration" crash the empire?

Especially when it was the Visigoths, Vandals and Ostrogoth were the only Barbarian tribes to reach and sack Rome at the end..

Not to mention the assimilation of Culture in "barbaric" territory is what strengthened the Roman Empire .. the original Romans were but a tiny farming community ruled by a King. The greatest success of Rome was to adopt other cultures, like the Greeks for instance, and use the new tribes to fortify their own traditions, increasing both militarily and economically. Technically, if anything, Rome grew and survived because of this "immigration" and different parts of the Empire were very, very different from one another.. there was no blanket Roman culture, just a Civilization. you can even see that in the Roman religion, Catholicism, as it is the hybrid of dozens of "Barbarian" religions, used to pacify the locals and bring them under the Roman banner.

I'd pick another Empire or Republic to compare us to.

Yes, but that does not imply Blue Shifts post was wrong. I would add corruption as point number 0. in his list. Corruption is the reason why many people are allowed to not pay taxes (or fair share) and actually leech wealth from the government in net effect, so others become overtaxed, from then it proceeds as he said.

Well in USA the poor and middle class don't pay taxes!
They might pay taxes throughout the year but then get a tax return containing more than they paid in because of EIC and such. So who isn't paying their fair share, I am one of those people I might add.

Money is the root of all evil point blank, before money was invented there was no problems. Just look at ancient society, they all got along and traded. Then "civil" society got involved in the mix and blam now we have money to control the people.

Do you really believe that? That all people in tribal societies lived in some form of paradise?

And do you mean hunters and gatherers? Because as long as there is specialisation, some form of currency is necessary.

Just look at ancient society, they all got along and traded.

"Traded" implies currency.

Money is NOT the root of all evil. Money is a wonderful invention, its not a coincidence that all advanced civilisations on this planet had money. The problem is only our current hijacked monetary system, not the concept of money as a whole.

Middle class and upper middle class pays the most if you take in the account their wealth. Uberrich and poor abusers of the welfare system are those which I have meant.
