In response to another question, he used Thursday's visit to the White House by the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, to make a point about the need for good job opportunities.

"I had the emir of Qatar come by the Oval Office today," Obama said. "Pretty influential guy. He is a big booster, big promoter of democracy all throughout the Middle East. Reform, reform, reform. ... Now he himself is not reforming significantly. There's no big move toward democracy in Qatar. But you know part of the reason is that the per capita income of Qatar is $145,000 a year. That will dampen a lot of conflict.

"I make this point only because if there is opportunity, if people feel their lives can get better, then a lot of these problems get solved."

Fox News

Did you catch it? Right there at the end?

"I make this point only because if there is opportunity, if people feel their lives can get better, then a lot of these problems get solved."

Hmmm... what problems exactly? And what opportunities?

On the face of it - Obama is saying "If people think their lives can get better (i.e. "hope") then political issues go away."

Underneath it though, and if read in context, he's relating that because Qatar's populace is spoon fed roughly $145k government handouts, they've got no problem with being run by a monarchy (aka: dictatorship).

WAKE UP AMERICA! They're coming for your freedoms, not at the point of a gun, but with a spoon full of sugar.

Get ready for more welfare state, get ready for more "Obama Money"

I want more buckets of KFC and watermelons. You guy's can't really complain about all this can you. First you kept black people as slaves and now you have a black man as your president, how would you feel? Who here raised money for his campaign? Biggest pyramid scam in the whole world, Madoff would have been proud.

Well, if they put me on welfare i will by some welfare ammo and guns!
Anything that can be said or done does not remove my first and second amendement rights.
I am not the only person who feels this way and we are everywhere.
So, if someone needs to take care of me so be it, we'll still do it on my terms.

In the video there is a banner representing "Change" at the 17 second mark. If you look at this banner, it duplicates the logo of Chase financial, who at least out here in the NW had not been heard of until they took over WAMU (Washington Mutual) AFTER the big bailouts. Interesting to me how that was woven into the Obama campaign.

Time to research just how much they contributed to the campaign...

what on earth are you talking about?

on to the OP. Per capita income is not welfare. that means the entire GDP of Qatar divided by their total population; the average income for each citizen. Income. That they make themselves. So no, Obama is not saying that Qatar's people don't revolt because the government gives them so much free money.
I tend to agree that Obama is being used to "kill us with kindness" and get us to love the NWO, but you're slightly off the mark there. Obama is saying that when a populace is well fed, rich and entertained, they tend not to start uprisings and revolutions, even if their government isn't that great. If anything, I think that he may be attempting to subliminally tell us in the U.S. to revolt. What better way to take full control of a nation than by staging a revolution and controlling both sides. The people think they've won some battle, the leaders think that they are guiding the "spirit of the revolution" and the string pullers cackle from the shadows.

regardless of interpretation, or misinterpretation, great find.

Do you, sounds of silence, actually want more KFC and watermelon? or are you just a bigot?

What does slavery or ethnicity have to do with anything? We're talking about what Obama said, not what color he is. Most Americans are aware of our history enough to know about slavery already. Most of us also know that having a black president is a big deal for a country like ours. "how would you feel" as in, in Obama's position? Pretty great. My country just rose up from its own ashes and made an honest attempt to move past the darkest parts of our history. Unlike you, who seems to want to wallow in it and make sure everyone stays nice and bitter.

Who is talking about Obama's campaign? The slavery comment made me think that you might have actually been defending Obama, now he's bernie madoff's role model? in a way, the Obama campaign could be considered a pyramid scheme in that we "invested" political capital in a man who promised us "hope and change" as a return on investment, which we've received none of. as if a politician can deliver it.

Either way, right or wrong, you've used racism and slavery and cynicism to make absolutely no point whatsoever, let alone a point that has anything to do with the OP. Nice work!

I agree with most of your point about Obama's election being a great step forward for the USA and it's people with him being black and the history of the USA regarding blacks but...

in hindsight, don't you all feel royally screwed? Bush just made me laugh, Obama actually scares me in some weird way.

You see the same entitlement mentality here on ATS daily.
It's evil corporations not Obamas' fault.
Tax the rich, they don't give enough.
The threads about the public union protests in Wisconsin, we want more money.

That free Obama money that so many want. Our societal dependence on social security, Medicare/Medicaid, welfare programs. Thanks to (Bush initially) and Obama later, our unemployment is higher than ever and we have 3 years of unemployment insurance assured to us.

*GAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!*

And people are now surprised when our government wants to tell us what to eat, drink, smoke, wear, live, say, do.

We've (as a society) looked to our government as a parent so why get surprised when it acts like one?

Freedoms and rights are only reserved for people that can handle and deserve them.

I can't honestly say that our country deserves those rights and freedoms that so many died for.

Shame.

In Qatar - it's not income. They don't do anything to earn the money. The monarch hands it out to them depending on the hierarchy of their family/tribe. This is very similar to the way proceeds from the Indian casinos are handled on reservations in the U.S.

So it's not strictly speaking "welfare", but it is a handout for nothing.

What a second? You took my comment after reading a Fox News artcile, and somehow made that into Fox News is a bunch of Nazis?

I am interpreting a piece of an article, I promise that Fox News did not even try to highlight that part like this...

careful - your bias is showing.

Bingo!

I never thought I'd fall into this "Libertarian" crap... but I am starting to feel like that's the only camp of sanity left.

Revolutions in the Mid-East. Revolutions are less likely to happen when the average per capita is 145k.

Opportunity to make money...work...employment. Egypt, Tunsenia, Libya...the people tolerated those dictatorships more or less, as long as there was economic opportunity. It wasn't until that dried up that the revolutions came to a head.

Uhhhh...The US Gov has no sugar to give...have you been watching the news? We aren't one of the worlds largest oil producers with a tiny population like Qatar (1.5 Million).

Qatar has the world's largest per capita production and proven reserves of both oil and natural gas.

In 2010, Qatar had the world's highest GDP per capita, while the economy grew by 19.40%, the fastest in the world.

Qatar has the highest human development in the Arab world after the United Arab Emirates.

For efs sake...thier economy GREW 20% last year....what are you missing here?

I think any rational observer understands his words....Economics and political unrest are closely related.

BTW - I have no delusions that rational thought or facts will have any bearing on such an OP, but I feel obligated to offer the facts anyways.

Obama isn't the Messiah. He's just another guy making a buck and building himself an underground condo bunker.

All those Messiah followers who've been being placated with tales of false salvation, well, time for them to wake up.

Your very first point shows you miss the whole boat. He's comparing Qatar to the mid east? No, he's comparing Qatar to the United States.

He's not saying this in reference to solve issue in the middle east, he's saying this to political donors of the Democrat party about how they should approach the populace here.

Last time I checked there weren't any revolutions happening here were there?
