I agree. Some people hoard away preparing for disaster. But they don't mentally prepare. A person really doesn't need to save anything. A person needs to know how to survive in the post apocalyptic world.

I can find food and shelter if I needed it. You need to have a "dog eat dog" mentality in the post apocalyptic world. A lot of folks simply don't realize that. Too many folks will get jacked because they won't understand the apocalyptic dog eat dog mentality.

It's going to be a savage world. A person has to be ready for that. Food and water is easy to find. Fighting off apocalyptic survivors is not that easy.

I live in the Midwest and since the state I live in at one time was the floor of the ocean and with all the different possibilities from a pole flip to the entire Midwest going under water again I have taken a 40 shipping container and have put outriggers on it so to say made out of 50 gal drums. That way if we don't flood I can bury it under dirt to hide it and if we go under water it will float like a big raff.

I am not physically prepared. I have been reading ATS threads for the last 6-8 months and most of it looks very true. But I cannot see any indication of SE Asia being affected. I live in Malaysia and the moment I talk about it, I get stares or funny remarks. There is no indication of anything happening here unless the super volcano in Indonesia (lake Toba) decides to wake up or some major tsunami strikes (should be really big as I live about 80 kms from the coast and on a hill.

However, I have been taking passive precautions for the condition where everything that we take for granted fails, like electricity, water supply, transportation and food. Passive precautions in the sense that I am educating myself and practically trying out a bit of farming, self electricity generation, basic food storage etc. My wife has always maintained "what has to happen will happen. All your preparations will go to waste." But what I am worried about is, if something had to happen and I am among the select few to survive, I shouldn't regret "wish I had learnt about this when I had the time and resources. My children are hungry. Wish I had something to give them."

I am more worried about a world without internet, communications and water to drink. With a failure of these, knowing what is where without a means of transportation is going to be an unsurmountable challenge.

Thanks.

This is more of a pep talk for myself than anything else, but I'll share it with you. For those who take stock in faith, (for those who don't you can't probably skip to the next post) don't forget spiritual preparation. It does become harder as the environment becomes more spiritually polluted, but, obviously, the value of spiritual prepping is if after all your best temporal preparations you still end up dead; facing that possibility beforehand could lead to the greatest amount of happiness in the long-term. Death can overtakes many before they expect it. If you were in a better place with the morality of your Maker, it will be well with you when you have gone the way of all the earth.

Hey chr0naut
Maybe you don't get it. Are you just another person who believes the Nanny will come to your rescue and make sure everything will be ok because they're just too concerned about your welfare to let you fend for yourself?

Go around shooting pointlessly? First, its a waste of ammo. Second, that's asking for trouble and attracts attention. You make a plan and execute with precision, not some stupid impulse to loot and survive. Backup plans are good common sense especially when you might be faced with nearly no preparation. I recommend all citizens of the US/rest of the world make such preparations with what is available to them before and after the SHTF.

So while you sit around waiting for Obama/Jesus Christ to come give you his savior hands and feed you MRE's, I'll be long gone having used whatever resources are available to me, including your family's food and water if you're not at home to put it to good use. If you are home, I'd leave you alone, but I'm also not going to hesitate to DEFEND myself if need be. And I sure as hell am not going to hesitate to TAKE valuable resources. Like most of us would agree, the MAJORITY of the population is unprepared. The people working in Downtown and live 30 miles away aren't going to be needing their supplies, food, water and RV they have back home because they're going to be screwed anyway. If you don't understand this, whatever and good luck to you when nobody comes to your rescue.
I don't need to kill anyone unless it's in self-defense (or to eat?? Only with A1, ha!). Nature will get rid of the weak on it's own. Unprepared and no backup plan? The odds of you surviving.....yea not much. That leaves a lot of stuff just lying around....

I think perhaps what you were thinking of in terms of disaster is along the lines of:
- Earthquakes/Natural Disasters
- Epidemics/Pandemics
- Fires (Natural or other)
- Terrorist attacks (Such as 9/11 if you want to be "PC" about it)
- Whatever else is localized in one area and on a scale small enough that it can still be controlled by government agencies and law enforcement

In these cases I agree with you that FEMA, military, and perhaps private contractors would take control of the situation. 30 days worth of survival would be ideal (maybe overkill) under these circumstances.

Now on the other end of the spectrum of disasters we have hypothetical events that are....lets say when SReallyreallyHTF just for the sake of universal understanding. Keep an open mind, use your imagination, be logical. I don't care if you don't believe it or how crazy it sounds, the possibility of things getting really serious and difficult for the average Joe is something that still remains.

1) Multiple nuclear ICBM's targeted at strategic targets by foreign states. China, Russia, India, North Korea, Iran, Etc. The US isn't the only country with nuclear weapons and launch capabilities, thus we can be targeted. We're talking major military installations and cities with major military presence.

2) Yellowstone. I've never even seen the 2012 movie so don't try to use that against me. Hollywood doesn't do much for me, I tend to stay away from that crap.

3) Some kind of other crazy mass-scale BS

Government won't be around to help you then because they will be underground. If you're in the path of radioactive fallout, you'd better GTFO. This is when RVs and motorhomes come in handy. The best place to store your survival gear is in mobile shelter such as these, because when you gotta go you can do it quickly.

The Cold War never ended. Just the fact that nuclear weapons even exist should be enough to make you prepare for such a situation. You CAN survive a full blown attack on your country (depending where you live..) If you're in New Zealand then you're probably not going to survive any kind of nuclear attack there, but I don't think you're at risk of that anyway.

I make it a point to study foreign policy and international treaties, agreements, basically watch the Chess pieces being moved around the board, anticipating the next couple of moves. It's really not that hard if you can see past all the smoke and mirrors.

I'm playing Fallout a lot on my ps3 to prepare.

Nah, I don't prepare at all. Reasons are my sister is handicapped and I take care of her and her little 2 year old girl. Nothing matters more to me than them, so since I have to plan for a disabled person and her small child, I will be looking at whatever situation may dawn on us and just go from there. I wont be able to move around a lot, as my sister is tied to a wheelchair. I am preparing mentally, you could say,and I have a lot of places worked out in my mind, which I can go to, collect equipment, then return to my sister. Anything that may go down, I will have to deal with, by basically only moving within 10 miles of my sisters house, as she will remain helpless there.

I feel ready, though. Never underestimate spirit, my grandad always said. I put my faith in my spirit and my ability to cope, if it all goes to hell.

I think this idea of 'having to prepare# by stockpilinhg food and guns is pandering to a negative fear mongering. I don't beleive we will have any need to do so as we are about to reach Ascension and so the outcome of what is going on is gonna be good and positve. The world is a Cinsciousness that is being raised at the moment. There is much being shouted about of doom and gloom, but those who know that the opposite is true are just keeping quiet and getting on with it. You need to look at the solence, too. There are many of us and getting more each day.

Well, not sure if it`s worth making survival preparations or not.

I mean, you can select the best place to hide, fill it with food, water, a medical SOS box, some bateries or another kind of free energy source and even grow your own food if possible, but then it will all depend on the kind and intensity of the destruction event that may hit the earth.
Also, how many times have you seen people who run or hide from something they fear and are the 1st ones to be hit by that thing ?

I personally believe and try to live day-by-day as we never know what`s come even in the next minute.
I also have the most possible self sustaind way of life as a model. My goal is to live in a place I like where I can grow my own food, have my own source of water and energy and learn how to build and do all the things I need, however, I won`t be doing this as a question of preparation for such an event or events that may or may not happen. Then, if something really bad happens, maybe a bag with a few food and stuff is enough for me and my familly to moove into another place if possible, or die with the rest of the population may be better than keep us alive to die a few months latter after suffering much more.

Basic thing is we never know where to move or what to do before something really happens:

- If we are talking about economical colapse, best thing is to have a kind of farm like the one I mention above and a few guns to defend yourself. Maybe people will join in closed communities that work and defend together as a group;

- If we are talking about huge natural disasters, comets/asteroids, virus or other desease,.... either it`s the kind of thing that can erase human life immediatly or in a question of time and you will never be prepared for, so better be the 1st to die, OR, it`s the kind of thing you can run from and move to another place and just have to fight and have the luck to get there, but you can only do this after you know if it`s better for you to leave and where to go.

I'm really surprised by the number of people saying there's no point to preparing for anything because they don't want to live through a disaster.

Sure, if it's all-out nuclear war or Captain Tripps, I can see that attitude: but what if it's just a 'local' event? I bet many of the survivors in places like Japan, new Zealand, Haiti, Katrina, etc. wish they had had a "bug-out" bag. They survived anyhow, but having a bag ready with a few essential supplies would have made the first couple of weeks after the disaster a bit more bearable.

That's what I'm planning for. If my home gets wiped out by an earthquake or fire, I have a boxful of camping supplies locked in the trunk of my car. Yeah, maybe both my home and my car will be wiped out at the same time, but you can only plan for so much. If I still can get at the stuff in the car, at least I have a tent, sleeping bag, food, and water for 10 days or so.

At that point the cavalry will have shown up... and if it really is the end of the world and I decide to "do myself in", at least I arrive at that decision after making a serious attempt to survive.

The number one reason for not preparing is understanding that what is coming cannot be prepared for. Live by the sword die by the sword.

If you are looking to fight for survival then you will be fighting.

I don't consider myself a Christian.. but i would say that if you want to prepare you would literally be spending hours a day praying or meditating. Because what will keep you alive(eternal) is not food and ammo.. it will be what your soul is ultimately aligned with. If you are trying to survive in a decaying hell you might be missing out on eternal life.

A bunker can quickly become a prison. And the external bunker is an expression of the walled bunker of many people's hearts.

What you are doing by planning for physical survival is buying time to prepare for soul survival. I am doing the same.. although the pull to start preparing my "soul" is getting stronger by the day. Again i am not a Christian.

But it would seem to me that if you are strong in your belief of love and truth then you are already totally prepared for ANYTHING.

I would say I'm awake and aware, but I haven't taken many (or some might say 'enough') steps to prepare. I have converted half of my life savings to gold and silver, but not much else in that respect.

Lately, I've been having a change of heart, regarding ELE's, NWO, 9/11, and things of that nature. Don't get me wrong, I do believe in conspiracies against the general public, but I'm also spiritual. And part of my spiritual growth has led me to adopt the philosophy that it is pointless to live in fear of everything.

I like to go with my gut most of the time. And my gut has mixed feelings about impending doom, and a sustainable future for the lifestyle that we're all used to.

Also, there's too many variables. Let's say i create a bugout bag, and survival kit, and what not. What's to say that a certain disaster will wipe out the bag? Or render it useless? Will life be worth living and trying to survive if nobody else is left?

I'd rather live in the now, and enjoy the time I have left with my friends and my family, rather than live in the fear of what MIGHT happen.

My plans for the near future, involve me checking things off my bucket list:

- skydiving
- mountain climbing
- white water rafting

Things of that nature. Think about it. We're given this gift of life to enjoy, and we're spending it in fear. F*** fear! I'm enjoying my life.

I might purchase a few survival and first aid items along the way, just in case. But for some reason, my gut is telling me I'll be fine. And my gut never fails.

Didn't see your post before, mine, but you took the words right out of my mouth. I totally agree. By focusing on your own survival, you're missing out on sharing life with those around you.

If we were meant to die, then we're going to die. I'm at peace with that. I live in contentment. And that's what we should all be focusing on, in the grand scheme of things.

Blue, I think that you don't get it. This thread was about survival preparations.

Food, water, shelter.

My credentials are that I was involved in planning for survival of a nuclear terrorist attack on the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia by one of the largest insurance companies in the world. I was one of the "go-to" guys to include in this think tank of government & businesses.

I personally have survived earthquakes, cyclones, traffic accidents and a major rail disaster.

I don't live in the states and don't expect Obama, or anyone else to come to my aid. To me, he's just some random black guy from another country.

Jesus has already done his bit for me.

I am already living substantially independently of society around me. I live in rural New Zealand. I grow my own food, generate my own power, catch rainwater, use solar technologies to heat & cool my home. I am not connected to town water, sewage or gas.

Similarly, someone who is "prepared mentally" for disaster only, is actually physically unprepared and should admit that.

Chr0naut,

What I'm talking about is just making a plan in case SHTF. Particularly for nuclear war against the US, since I live in San Diego which is one of the top on the list of targets due to the massive amounts of military presence here. We have Miramar, North Island/Coronado, Imperial Beach, Nassco, Camp Pendleton...all of which are critical installations. The whole West coast has large amounts of military.
Anyway, so you're somewhat self-sustainable. That's great. You're in an area where the only real threats are maybe earthquakes and fires perhaps. Here, we have to worry about being attacked by so-called terrorists since they "hate" our freedom and want us all dead because we represent the Great Satan. Ok well I don't buy into that BS but I'm more particularly worried about the fact that we have Chinese military officials roaming around our weapons labs free to inspect and do pretty much as they please. Not only that, but the US nuclear policy is quite a load of BS too. Absorb a first strike? Then what? Only thing we can do after that is sit around waiting for the Russian and Chinese armies to get here and take over.

This is exactly why I ithink we're more at threat here of nuclear war than anywhere else.

Hey, if nothing happens, great. Better safe and prepared than caught with my pants down jerking off to some 70's porno. Ahem. Yea. Something like that.

Great topic. I have made the conscious decision to not prepare for a SHTF event simply because I do not want to live in a world that has gone bonkers. Minor events (short-term blackouts, hail storms, tornadoes) are a much different story. In those scenarios there is hope for recovery and a return to "normal" life within a relatively short period of time. But when I start thinking about some of the big doom&gloom scenarios (war, forced labor camps, asteroid/meteor/comet collision, etc) all hope for normalcy is lost. If hope is lost, why bother preparing to "ride it out?" I'd much rather die.

This is not exactly a logical or rational thought process, but I've made peace with it.

im not preparing.
to answer why i will just say that i hope to see the SHTF and get killed fast and painless (hopefully some nuke in the face.

to be more precisse i allways dreamed to live on island or other place where i could shield my self from any external influence (govmt, stupid laws etc) to create mini utopia - no religion driven BS - just eat what you grow, play with what you make, build just to improve your self (same with work - no money - every one in such comunity would be required to spend 3h a day doing things they do not like or are hard - like building, gathering etc.)

small comunities like that would be paradise for me ...

but thats a big dream - if SHTF every one will be jumping each other throat for a scrap of food/water or whatever...

no thank you i would rather take nuke head on

I have yet to actually "prepare" as you call it. I do enjoy indoor gardening as a hobby (mostly salad greens, raspberry, strawberry) Winemaking is another hobby of mine. I have rain-barrels does that count as a water source?

To me, it would be more maddening being prepared, or in the process of preparing, anticipating something that may not happen in our lifespans. (I hope noone is an English major or they might pluck their eyes out at my half cocked grammar.)

Plus you can do all the preparing in the world and it still wont be enough for some of the fantasy doomsday scenarios.

Does anyone who is preparing feel extremely paranoid?
Being paranoid is stupid.

I would like to challenge those who are making physical preparations for major world/earth upheavals to remember that the most important thing that you can do for ALL our survival is to channel the best possible energy into the world through your daily life, thoughts, actions and choices. I believe that taking personal responsibility for how we live our lives, and being present to do so, is more critical now than ever.

I'm not suggesting anyone ignore the impulse to be prepared - especially in these times! However, if you are only doing so from a place of fear, fear is what your adding to the world.

Perhaps those who are not preparing with survival plans and supplies as you describe are choosing non-action from fear as well. Whatever action or nonaction is right for you will hopefully come from a higher place than fear.
