A mother-of-five has been diagnosed with a rare disorder called Pica after seeking medical help for her addiction... to eating sofas.

And I thought I heard it all, lol. That's a really crazy addiction! Don't they say that aliens eat weird stuff?! Hhhhmm

Well... I guess she has the market cornered on old sofas! I see this as an evolutionary step in humankind to dispose of our garbage.

This is a real disease, people are compelled to eat non-edible things!

Some guy ate an entire military jeep at some point in time, just crazy.

Yeah, that is some weird stuff. I have heard of pica but not sofa eating. My goodness. lol

When I was pregnant, I CRAVED salt. Could eat it right out of the salt dispenser until my tongue blistered. Very dangerous although at the time I thought it was no different than the stereotypical pickle cravings.

Pica is a medical disorder characterized by an appetite for substances largely non-nutritive... or an abnormal appetite for food ingredients (e.g. ...salt...)... Pica is seen in all ages, particularly in pregnant women...

Well for one, that's a really expensive snack, but so is coal in more ways than one.

Dude your so wrong for that. She's not dumb, she's not doing it because she wants to.. she's compelled to do it from this neurological disorder. Pica in it's many forms can be a very serious disease. Farm animals who get starved to death to make the meat tender get pica and nibble on their cages in an effort to try to get nutrition.

People have eaten glass, metal even cigarette ashes because something in their head tells them they have to. Sometimes the causes are physical and sometimes they are psychological. Sometimes it's brought on by deep seated trauma. If the person really cannot help themselves that doesn't make her dumb.

Just like smoking cigarettes, people know its bad for them and do it anyways...

Its all about Choice my friend...

She has a Choice to eat a sofa or not....or replace her habit with something else....

Ever see a smoker quit and chew gum instead? Yeah, that becomes their new habit, but it is way better then smoking cigarettes...

Should smoking go into the neurological disorders as well?

She knows her consequences just as smokers do...

Yeah, I think that is the same woman actually. lol They look alike (check out the OP's source for her photograph) and their stories appear to be the same in terms of trying to eat it in private, etc., and what parts of the cushion are their favorite.

She should get a hold on airplane cushions...full of yummy beer fart goodness.

This has nothing to do with being 'stupid'. It's a disorder named Pica'.

Pica is a pattern of eating non-food materials..

Look at my response to someone elses criticism on my previous post...

I know about the disease...they also have people that just eat 3 kinds of food and nothing else...

Also Chalk and other things....there is other stuff to replace the habit, people should know this, yet continue after many warnings..

I've seen people eat light bulbs and other things as well..it doesn't mean they should keep doing it just cause they feel a "need" too...just like my cigarette post...

There are some seriously cruel children in here. Are we in the 6th grade where we make fun of everyone who isn't like us or has a strange problem?

As has been mentioned Pica is a real issue, it is generally caused by iron deficiency. Normally people will be addicted to chewing ice, next most common is dirt, but in reality it can be anything that the persons brain links to getting the iron they need. This has nothing to do with intelligence or stupidity this has to do with being able to control subconscious desires otherwise known as will power.

And any of you who aren't in peak physical shape always eat right, take good care of yourself and quite possibly live like a monk are in no place to judge another's will power. Statistics say that 1 in 4 of you are fat and couldn't keep a Twinkie out of your mouth if you tried which is a similar problem to Pica. This is different from smoking, drinking, or any chemical addiction because it is a traceable neurological disorder that is not brought on from an external chemical.

Imagine what they would say if she ate carpets.
