Laser gun fired from US navy ship

The US Navy has fired a laser gun from one of its ships for the first time.

Researchers used the high-energy laser (HEL) to disable a boat by setting fire to its engines off the coast of California.

Similar systems had previously been tested on land, however moist sea air presented an extra challenge as it reduces a beam's power.

The navy said that ship-borne lasers could eventually be used to protect vessels from small attack boats.

The US military has been experimenting with laser weapons since the 1970s.

I think this is a HUGE step in military technologies and it actually amazes me that they are making this public.

Great. If, however, our foreign policy gave other nations the respect they deserve and if we weren't obsessed with taking all the world's resources for ourselves, we would not have to be concerned about defense. Imagine what happens when a war hawk dies. He/she suddenly is in an existence where none of what was important on earth matters except how we thought about it. It is our thoughts that shape us and it is these that, when allowed to wander to fear, will condemn us to misery.

Is this similar to the rail gun they have been working with since the 80's as well? Wither way, pretty cool that a laser gun is even possible.

Could be? also could have something to do with teslas "deathray" - SDI who knows though. this tech in the americans hands = scary in my opinion.
