I suppose that the West could just let them to get on with their little brutal wars where the victims are just the normal people trying to scrape by. You just need to look around Africa to see the nastiness that happens when the people in power get wound up. Africa can be a very uncompromising place, for which examples could be readily provided. Research the topic with an open mind.

The UN and British saved Sierra Leone from the brutality that swept the nation in 2000 (remember the thousands who lost limbs, for a laugh). France has stepped in to stop the anarchy in Ivory Coast.

To restate, in 1960 when Ivory Coast got their independence from France that charming man Gbagbo was not on the scene, so it would have been rather difficult for him to do the "booting". I am not sure how difficult that is to (a) understand and (b) research properly.

Instead of thinking that I am “falling for the propaganda” could it be that you are just gullible and believe anything that proves your particular mistrustful worldview.

Regards

ok WEST africa is full of corruption...you tell me who has the money..look at who is supporting Qutarra..... all foregin paid...dont stick up for the french...any human being would not stand for their country to be colonized...especially for a second time.

to add, this ugly head reappeared a couple of years ago when they introduced ID cards...WITH the french flag on it...hence gbabgos new stance

secondly..in seirra leone...they needed the violence...so they could smuggle the diamonds out, as the country had no government...

DONT EVER THINK THAT THE WEST HELP AFRICA IN ANYWAY....IN A.N.Y.W.A.Y.!!

And where do you think all of this "nastiness" comes from? Probably has something to do with how the West screwed over Africa so badly that it could never recover; and if it threatens to do so, we invade them just like in Libya. It's pretty obvious that French involvement in Libya is related to the Ivory Coast; It's all about the imperialists crushing African nationalists so they can continue to rape their resources.

So personally, I think it's pretty sick that you think we should be policing Africans around because you see "nastiness" there. It's only nasty because we will only provide them with help if they give us their resources for slave-prices.

Like most African rulers, Gbagbo will probably live out his remaining days in absolute luxury – gold teeth and several mansions to flit between.

I salute the French and the UN for doing the right thing.

Those are some pretty ignorant assertions about African rulers, followed by support for foreign powers ousting them no less.

As Gbabgo seizes Central Bank assets in Ivory Coast, a look at the arcane institution

Dakar, Senegal
When an infrastructure-strapped backwater such as, say, Guinea-Bissau looks to borrow the tens of billions of West Africa CFA francs it needs to tar rural roads and string power lines, its functionaries fly here, to La Banque Central des États de l’Afrique d’Ouest: the central bank for eight West African nations (Ivory Coast, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Togo, Benin, Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Niger). It's where government debt is sold in the form of treasury bills to whatever arcane financiers harbor a niche interest in owning a chunk of Africa's debt.........

"We've never really known the ins and outs of how the bank is governed," Eurasia Group Africa Analyst Anne Fruhauf said in a phone interview. "It's always been extremely nontransparent." ...........

According to Mabri, Gbagbo's functionaries cashed themselves checks from the country's bank account; sold their own treasury bills in the midst of a near civil-war climate; sidestepped regulations; transferred Central Bank funds to commercial banks that recognize, or at least do business with Gbagbo.

And the world outside the Central Bank is still trying to comprehend how he managed it.
