I typically don't create threads here, I just come in and look through the topics, commenting here and there, but I wanted to start a discussion about the Slut Walk protests that are going on. If this is in the wrong place, mods I apologize. This is a link to an article about the Toronto Slut Walk from CBC news. The protest was started because of a comment from a Police Officer. He said that women should "avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." www.cbc.ca...

Firstly, I am a woman in my mid 20s. I understand what they're trying to do. What a woman wears doesn't matter, and dressing in a provocative way does not mean a woman is "asking for it". I also understand that clothing choice doesn't even matter when it comes to sexual assault and that women are victimized regardless of what they wear. What I don't understand however, is how a "Slut Walk" is going to help anything. I mean, if rape has nothing to do with what a woman wears, then why make such a big deal out of it by focusing on the "slut" theme? Why not just call it the "The Walk to End Rape?

I received an invite on FaceBook to participate in the walk that will take place in my city. I commented in the event, asking if it wouldn't be more productive to ask the cops in question to provide women with things like basic self defence training or maybe hold seminars on how to protect themselves, and how to be prepared if a situation like this were to happen. I was told that women shouldn't have to learn self defence, they shouldn't have to prepare, it just shouldn't happen at all. Now, i get that...I really do. I can understand the desire for a society that doesn't have these types of negative things in it. I can understand the desire for a perfect world with no crime. But we don't live in a perfect world, we live in reality, and in reality, criminals and crime DO exist. So wouldn't it be better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best? It's not like we can just wave a magic wand to make it disappear. We have to acknowledge that its part of our society and find productive ways to stop it, and prevent it. I just don't understand how walking around proudly proclaiming to be a slut is going to accomplish that. I hadn't seen any posts yet about this so i wanted to bring it to ATS for discussion! So what do people here think? I know they want to raise awareness about rape, but i think that focusing so much on the whole "slut" thing is taking away from the main message they want to get across.

Girls acting out emotionally? Hmm... No way... You don't say?

Second line.

I don't think they really even care about the main issue at hand, it seems to me like another excuse to be "rebellious". And although morally, in a perfect world it would not happen, but this is reality as you say and it will happen, forever. If I was a woman i'd rather take self defence classes instead of dressing like a slut to be eyed on international television and on the street (Don't women find it offensive to be called a slut anyway? just as men find it offensive to be called girly?)

After this, we'll have "porn walk" protests in which women/men demand they be allowed to engage in sex acts on the street without being criticised.

There are also men walking along side them in the "slut walk"'s. Obviously came to just "check out the slutz".

Interesting. Unfortunately, its a relic of the Abrahamic religions. I have always found it odd and a bit amusing in a twisted way, how those religions deal with women. Men are supposed to be superior. but they are forever being portrayed as weak and ineffectual in the presence of women.

www.cbc.ca...

When the story first broke in January, Toronto police Chief Bill Blair said Sanguinetti's comments highlight a "training issue" in the force.

"If that type of, frankly, archaic thinking still exists among any of my officers, it highlights for me the need to continue to train my officers and sensitize them to the reality of victimization," he said.

The comments attributed to the officer "place the blame upon victims, and that's not where the blame should ever be placed," Blair said.

This whole idea that men cannot control their penises, and therefore women must cover themselves, their hair, stay indoors, not be alone without a chaperone, etc., is a weird middle eastern custom. Apparently, men from those cultures have little self control. But every other culture that has been infected with those religions have adopted some measure of the idea that "men are weak and cannot control themselves and there fore women must be held to a higher standard."

Its pretty pathetic, really, that line of reasoning. And "Archaic" is the perfect word for it.

I personally think its time people acknowledged that what someone else is wearing or doing doesnt excuse you from having responsibility for your own actions and choices.

I saw a video on this on the news and really, it seemed like half of them didn't even know why they were there, other than to wear granny's panties with fishnets and show everyone they've got a bad case of the boobjiggles. Standing around the police station as well.....why? They accomplished nothing. Awareness to what? Being able to wear 'slut' clothes and not get raped? Sorry ladies, you need to know what to do if you're being attacked, and I can tell you it will not be to dance around and complain about what someone said at one point.
I agree, it should be for something positive or just call it how it is....a reason to snap their gum while saying 'yaw, well, he shoodnta said that about us! Sluts forevaaaa!'

And I'll have them to know, most slutz I have met do not look like they've raided the bargain bin underwear at the thrift shop

Ehh... I turned that off after the woman said within a minute of the video something along the lines of "If I wan't to not wear underwear under my skirt I don't want it to give consent to be raped" or whatever.

In many communities you dress the way you want to be treated. Dress like a professional get treated like a professional. Dress like a slut, you'll get treated like a slut. Imagine what would've happened in the 30s if they had a slut-walk to protest their junk. Humanity is failing, I am just praying for a big rock to smash into us.

i think that a lot of people are just jumping into protests without really thinking about what it is they're protesting. I saw a collection of photos from the Toronto protest and some of the signs were like "Jesus loves sluts" and there was one that said "S.L.U.T = dignity" and "it shouldn't be this hard to be easy" and all i could think is...is that really the message you want to send?

It is about raising awareness and grabbing attention. A Slut Walk will do just that. What a scum bucket that cop is, he is a TRUE pig.

Dressing promiscuously creates temptation (or pity), temptation often leads to you-know-what. Women are asking for something when they wear clothes that barely covers them, or at least covers them tightly. They just don't want to admit that they love the attention it brings.
Oh but when it attracts the wrong kind of attention... Just do anything that will lower the risk of some kind of abuse and wear normal clothing when you go out. Yes I know that it doesn't matter what you wear when you pass a dark alley with a serial rapist hiding behind the dumpster... but all in all the more revealing you dress the more likely that something negative will happen to you.

I find this walk entirely shameful though, and to think this was happening in my backyard and I had no idea until now.

Also I want to leave this joke here by Dave Chapelle (some swearing btw):

In a society where women are openly labled "bitches and ho's" and whatever "snooki" is I am shocked any women would even show up for a "slut walk"and allow herself to be further debased. As the father of two daughters ( grown) I am just a bitter curmudgeon saddened to see this is some how okay to call woman "sluts" and they seem to accept it.;
However as a red blooded male skirt; and under wear optional is fine for adults.

You are correct, as that is the primary purpose of showing a little skin, to create temptation and generate attention. I bet you in the next social revolution, in which dressing slutty is a thing of the past and let's say, having your feet look a particular manner (the way the chinese did it) is the new "temptation device" we'll have "foot-walks" in which women demand to be able to expose their feet without being treated differently or raped.

Every piece of clothing we have grown to get used to wearing, has followed a specific guideline based on sexual attraction. Looking good = sexually attractive. If sexual attraction was not paid attention to in regards to "fashion" we would all be wearing the same type of clothing.

What a woman wears does matter. Plain and simple.
Women who dress like sluts broadcast their insecurity.

Raising awareness about what? Grabbing attention for what?

This is in retaliation because a cop who said to a bunch of people "Don't dress like a slut.", When asked about protecting yourself from sexual assault.

Just so we are clear, in Canada, (where this happened) Sex assault covers anything from a pat on the ass to rape. They don't have clear definitions in the Criminal Code. The specifics are addressed in the court.

So what the Officer was saying... can be applied to real life. How many girls get a bump on the butt at the bar? Lots of girls I know get them, and they don't mind!

Most important part of that ^^ is that some girls seek attention that is outlined as a crime in our Criminal Code, so if a guy meets a girl like that one night, but meets the undercover nun dressed half naked the next night, there could be a misunderstanding.

Anyways, as far as serial rape goes, no clothing does not matter. Totally different story.

I wish Canada made some clarifications in their laws actually. But when you are talking about this case specifically and what the cop said to the law he was talking about, and the country we are in and how it outlines its laws, then what the officer said applies.

So too does the old saying "dress for success". If we all had the same personality types we would all wear the same thing. Yes, your clothing and dress does say something about your personality. That is part of life.

Heck, I'm a guy, and technically, according to our laws I've been sexually assaulted before in nightclubs. Of course, I didn't care that much.... and I won't change how I dress (I sure as hell get more attention if I make myself look nice before going out)

Oh by the way.... The Canadian government was pushing to make "streaking" something that would end up a person on the sex offender list.

Frat boys everywhere are soiling themselves, I'm sure....

Why is it that girls feel the need to dress half naked? I don't see guys going around dressing like that... And yeah it creates ALOT of temptation. When i was in high school and I saw sooo many girls wearing the skankiest stuff.. It's like they are asking for it... Whereas when I see girls who are actually wearing clothes that cover them it makes me want to have a relationship with them... When I see a slut (half naked girl) the first thing that comes to mind is...*cough cough*. Why else would they wear that stuff? A lot of my friends even agree on this point. They'd do a slut but wouldn't want to be in a relationship with one.

Dress how you want to be treated....

Has anyone ever heard of a tazer? You ladies should you know... buy one..

I think the one good thing that would come out of this is, the officer who made the comment will be known. We can't let people of authority say such things without some kind of repercussion. Ignore the rebels, look at what's important. Is it ok for cops to say these things? If you think it is, fine, read the next story, who cares?

Thanks for proving the point of this thread...

Key words: grabbing, attention.
