For me it has to be The Day The Earth Stood Still. The idea that someone out there cares enough to try and make Humans see the error of their ways and shut down the whole planet, except for airplanes and hospitals, speaks to me in a way that says there are peaceful friendly aliens out there that want the best for us.

Probably a very naive way of looking at things, given our propensity for shooting first and asking questions after, but I like to think that even if we are still a very violent race, there is hope for us.

I loved that movie too. I saw it for probably the 50th time last fall, probably during Halloween season and enjoyed it as much as when I was a kid. And on a personal note... If aliens look like Klaatu, then I say "Welcome to Earth"

Definitely Contact is one of the great alien movies out there, at the same level as Close Encounters... It was based on a book by the great Carl Sagan and it deals with a sort of alternative way of making contact (not in the usual film-esque way with huge ships coming to Earth) which is absolutely interesting and will probably leave you thinking about it after seeing the movie.

I also enjoyed Altered which is a small horror flick made by one of the Blair Witch guys.

come on signs and war of the worlds remake.... bleh a lot of these movies were bad... I am surprised Tom Cruise hasn't commissioned a movie about the scientology prophecy yet...

Independence day was only good because of will smith and jeff goldblum (from his popularity in jurassic park) were in it.

i listed it in an earlier post, "the ice pirates" made in the early 80's, in a universe were water is scarce and everyone wants it. its a screwball comedy film, funny with good effects and storyline. kind of a comedy star wars
i highly reccomend it

I think Close Encounters of the Third Kind will always be the quintessential alien movie for me. I also loved E.T., as I grew up in the 80's, so of course, a generational thing.

I do love the old black and white alien flicks, and yes, I love Independence Day (even with all the plot holes). Not a movie, but the original V miniseries would probably even top CE3K for me...as it's how I think we'd really be taken over, if that was their aim.

Starman was another good one, and Sphere was cool (I'm probably the only one who thinks so though). Cocoon is another good one for benevolent aliens.

I actually had bought this in a $3 dvd bin not too long ago, and recently watched it. Man, is it campy, but so cheesy, you just have to laugh....

The Last Starfighter and The Black Hole(Disney) were also very entertaining as well.
Cheezy movies are fine by me. I grew up watching them and prefer them too Reality anything shows.
Another good B rater is 70's Laserblast.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

All I was thinking was "Man, we waited the whole movie and the alien is her Dad?" Good movie, right up until the ending...which really was kind of a let down.

Not sure I saw it mentioned yet, but 2001, 2010 are right up there too... "My God...it's full of stars!"

If you like cheesy though, how about Explorers? Great movie, up until they meet the ridiculous aliens. Still enjoyable though, but man...those aliens were a bit much to take.

Flight of the Navigator, easily another favorite. Anybody ever catch the parallels between that craft and some of Lazar's descriptions?

"Compliance!"

Great and classic UFO flick.

I loved that movie! It was just on over a month ago here on ABC Family and I was so excited to watch it lol That was a pretty cool movie for its time.

They are actually redoing the movie, which imo is not needed.
