I have got a HP Pavilion 8580c and recently installed XP, but I cannot use my DVD nor CD efficiently (only recognizes music, but data) Can someone assist me??

Try running the service pack 1 and all the updates first through windows update , maybe these glitches have been addressed there .

You may even want to drop by the CD-drive makers site and see about download their newer device drivers for WinXP. Additionally, if you are inclined; try checking to see if you data cable is firm and straight.(flat&wide cable), it sounds like the audio cable(tiny one that feeds into sound board) is fine.
Also make sure the red stripe on the data cable is facing the power connector when the cable is straight and flat.(Assuming that the data cable isn't key'd on it's connector facing the drive). In summary, it's either a device driver issue or a loose connection with the data cable.
