Here is a very good explanation of compasses going a little quirky. There's been some youtube videos with compasses going off true magnetic north. Well there's an explanation for why that happens. This is not to dispute anyone's claims, it's just scientific information and some pointers when using a compass.

Thanks for a bit of sanity. I"ve known PS for years and he tends to not know, or care about, some really basic stuff, like using good equipment and not using compasses inside anywhere around metal to get the best reading.

Your welcome, I wasn't satisfied with what I saw so I did a little bit of searching. I remember learning about magnets and compasses in school, so when I saw those videos, I thought there's got to be more to it than meets the eye.
And of course there usually is.
