Even if supposed artificial 'life' was advanced to the point of sentient, self-aware consciousness (countless episodes involving Data struggling to
be 'human' in Star Trek: TNG rings a bell here) one could argue the difference would be the spirit or soul.
The scientific definition of life is an organism that is organized, grows, reproduces, adapts, requires homeostasis, and has a metabolism. If AI can
fit into all of these categories at once, then it will be considered alive. But until then, it's not.
