Blanket statements are for ignorant people with fewer then 12 working brain cells.

Facebook and Twitter can be used to give status updates about our bowel movements, but they can also be useful as tools to market music and other small business concepts. I should take your word and dump it because you are posting on a website about Bigfoot Reptiles?

Get over yourself already. Most Facebook users aren't playing Petville. They are networking. Same as you, here.

Interesting. I've noticed only two fervent proponents of FB, and they were the only ones to use abusive and vulgar language. Says it all, really.

Unfortunately, facebook will probably be around to polute the minds of our grandchildren's grandchildren.

Unless you already have grandchildren who have grandchildren.... I don't think so.

I don't have a FB account and don't anticipate having one. The requests to join it I flatly ignore.
(And BTW, how can I get email requests to "befriend" them from people I've never even heard of? Never mind, I am not really interested.)

I am glad to see so many people here who refuse to give into the relentless (and mindless) pressure of "social networking". There's hope yet.

Now that you pose the question from an outside perspective, what indeed is Facebook?

When you are arrested for a crime your picture is taken, your prints are taken, your height, weight and other personal data are permanently entered into the criminal database. And what is that called? Getting booked.

Facebook.. Sign up today!

It's what some people do and share on Facebook that beggars belief. I have an account again now after not having it for 6 months or so. I have a reasonably big extended family and Facebook helps me keep in contact with them all. The 6 months without it, I missed out on news of 3 or so births because no one bothered emailing, they would just put pics up on Facebook.

I have it as private as you can get, no phone numbers, addresses, birthdates or any of that. The only "Friends" I have are people I see in real life. A status update maybe once a week or so if I have something to ask or tell. Don't play any games on there at all. No email notifications about anything.

If it wasn't for family and the fact I now need one to be an admin of a company page, I certainly wouldn't bother.

What Facebook is;

Its a place stupid people put the things they dont want nosy people, their parents, the government, potential employers and such to know, and its where the rest of us put things that we do not care if the whole world knows. Its also a place where those with little to no personal insight reveal themselves with pretty stunning detail, which is very convenient for those who want a quick snapshot of another human being.

If one was so inclined, it would be a great place to build a deliberate persona to impress potential employers who feel they are getting an inside look into your life.

Facebook, like many things in life, is what you make of it. No one forces you to allow a million apps to have access to your data, I only allow ONE app to collect my data and that app is Diaspora, a competing social networking thingie that was created to deal with some of Facebooks privacy issues.

joindiaspora.com...

I totally ignore pokes, hearts and pleas from friends to help them in some mafia war or on some silly farm.

And you can't bag IRC.. well, you can bag Dalnet... And Undernet...

Facebook has it's positive and negative sides. Thanks to Facebook I have been able to get in touch with friends I haven't seen in many years, because they live on different continents. I've been able to keep in touch with some of my family members across the world, and have been able to share pictures and videos with them. It's nice to be able to do so. It gives good opportunities for networking. I guess if you don't like to keep in touch with people you can't see on a daily basis and if you don't like networking, Facebook isn't for you.

Do I like the idea of data mining? Nope. I keep everything private and try to keep my friend list small. There are those people with hundreds of "friends", but I'm not one of them, and neither are a lot of people using Facebook. MySpace was O.K. but it got far too busy. Facebook is more simple and down to the point. Sometimes it's nice to be able to share a news article with everybody, or bounce ideas off multiple people when you know you'll never see that group of people in one room (except maybe at your funeral). If these tools are used responsibly and with caution, I don't see the harm in it. Unless someone can offer a super-secure connection to all these people, Facebook is going to remain the #1 or #2 choice of communication between friends and family. Hell,... everything you ever wrote on the internet never disappears anyway. Privacy on the net is an illusion. It's a scary thought. It's your choice to participate or not.

Today I was wishing it was dead. I actually got threatened that CPS would be sent to my house simply because I unfriended somone due to them 'poking' friends of mine they didn't even know. Who does that?!

I printed off the threats, blocked all communication and am certainly going to be a lot more careful as to who I add in the future. Before today, I thought it was kinda cool as sort of a scrapbooking tool - that generations from now would be able to look at the family photos, see the comments and what was going on back in the day.

I use it as a news feed for my favorite bands and shows. Knowing when Steve Madden shoes are 30% off doesn't suck either

I can't stress the importance of using privacy tools. Facebook doesn't make this easy as it's a bit of an effort to make sure all your information is locked down, multiple pages and steps are needed.

Treat it like any other internet site. No matter how well you think you know people there could be psychosis lurking in the shadows. Never share personal information such as your address with people you only know via online, xbox ect. even if the info is for something as innocous as a gift. You can never know the true motives of people. If I can't shake your hand you're not getting my phone number or address. What am I saying, I don't even give that info to people with whom I do shake hands

I hate to call someone a liar but, I don't believe for one second that the OP smashed his iPhone. He may have done it accidentally at some time but due to Facebook? I doubt it. I know it sounds better when you embellish stories so they sound better.
As far as Facebook is concerned, I don't think it'll die anytime soon. It has intertwined itself into so many people's lives. A lot of people rely on Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family. It's the new way of communicating. Like the party lines of the past.

Anyhow, that's my 3 cents. I just wish people wouldn't be so dramatic.

I keep in touch with updates from a couple local permaculture groups in the fingerlakes area, I've talked to a lot of people of differing points of view about politics, environment, social issues, and I do see some amusing things, and share them of course. I don't do farmville, and I think I'm one of the last few standing that has no applications on my profiles. I use facebook for a broad spectrum of people to engage in conversation, even though I have plenty in college already. Also I have a few former professors I keep up with, some relatives, and wacky militants who are always talking about chem trails and whining about palestinians. Basically, I think it's got a lot going for it, if you're not devoid of independent thought and self control. I also don't use my real name on facebook, or my real d.o.b., or exact location, obviously they have an IP address for me, but I don't pay the bills here
Feck smart phones, and cell phones, and wireless in general, I still think all this dna jostling energy will prove to be bad for us, but I guess the jury is still out. I just think you can use facebook as a tool to have contact with individuals and organizations you would otherwise not be aware of, or be able to read articles by, if it didn't exist. Besides, I live near Buffalo, NY, and I'm too broke to buy a snowmobile...

I guess I am an oddity, because I love Facebook for the social aspect of it. I am a stand-up comedian, and a major social butterfly......so I use it for promoting, networking, and keeping up to date with family and friends. I HATE talking on the phone, so it works perfect for me. At least i don't waste money on an IPhone. I have a computer and a laptop, why would I need to get the internet on my phone.????????
I don't "post" about my bathroom habits, and I "hide" all those who do that wind up in my "news feed". But I do post funny/motivational "advice" that induces "chatter" between my closest friends and fans.

For the most part Facebook is harmless and meant to be fun. Those who are addicted are usually too intellectually inept to hold a conversation face to face, and need to feel important in other ways.

I am glad you have found other ways to entertain yourself. We all do. When I really want to get away, I just hop on the motorcycle and visit nature. Life is about finding balance between work, family and play times. Do it up the way that makes you enjoy your exsistance!

Peace!

Sort of a social phenomena. Didn't someone just drop a bundle on FB which essentially guarantees it will be worth a fortune in the future? I forgot who that was....? Until someone comes up with a better way to communicate with close friends and acquaintances, I don't see it going anywhere myself.

I usually have a Facebook tab open when I'm at my computer, unless I'm working on something. I have my 'real-life' friends and family, as well as internet friends I've connected with and shared information with at some point, on my friends list.

My news feed has more news links and 'conspiracy' stuff than friends' personal daily life details and dramas, but only slightly. I like posting interesting quotes, news articles, and videos that I hope people will watch/read/think about. Most of my family and personal friends are probably not familiar with the weird topics I tend to post about, so I guess I expose them to it and give them an opportunity to check stuff out.

On a few occasions, 'normal' friends have asked me about things I've posted. For instance, I posted something a couple weeks ago I think, about the proposed resolution to end the Afghan war. My friend's dad private messaged me about it and we had a good discussion. To begin with, he was completely advocating the official story of why we're there and why we need to be there, but a few days later I noticed he had responded to a poll about the subject and answered that we should get out of the war.

I guess my point is that I enjoy Facebook. The site enables me to share information. I can see all sorts of links from my 'weirdo' friends and when I find something interesting I can then share it with all of my other friends (weird and 'normal' alike). Occasionally, I am pleasantly surprised to find that a 'normal' friend can appreciate some 'weird' perspective or bit of info.

They're only 'sheeple' because they haven't been exposed to any information that challenges the officially acceptable opinion/perspective/story. I'm sure most of them either hide me or just scroll over everything I post, but that's their choice. It doesn't discourage me from posting and being active on the site.

Yeah, it's for collecting information about people. They have all my data now and one day I might be targeted and taken away somewhere. If that's the case, I'm cool with that. While they can see everything I post, so can everyone on my friends list. I'm not dangerous. So, I figure if they take me to Camp FEMA, my friends and family will see that I was correct about the fascism of the State and that would be more effective in waking them up than all of my posts on Facebook ever could.

Haters gonna hate though. Carry on.
